kai2: ... it looks like after all of these years the game is $120m in the hole and still nowhere near release. Ambition, pride, inexperience, and incompetence... it's all there (and more).

borisburke: A perfect candidate for the pre-order scam.

Drum up a frenzy of anticipation with bold claims and unrealistic trailers, then have naive 'I want it first' gamers pay off your debts. Later, feign surprise, offer some hasty patches and put your feet up in the sun with a little parasol in your drink. Simple. And more importantly, legal.
and some say they love preordering

nightcraw1er.488: I agree, the naval combat was pretty great. I would have, in a sequel, liked to have seen more upgrade, ship selection. There wasn’t a huge amount of tactics available, so choices of ships, weapons would have been nice. I agree on the base building part. Also I would ditch all the modern day bits, and the collectibles. Who knew the Caribbean had chests on every single inch of land! Some variety in towns/town actions too. Heck I still don’t see why they don’t push an old anvil engine out for modders to use, community could ramp out some great stuff, just look at what has been done on the sea dogs series (including maelstrom engine on itch.io). Oh, that may be a good suggestion for you, have a look at those games and the maelstrom engine:

kai2: Thanks! Yeah, I haven't yet downloaded the engine and GOF mod... but I certainly will. It looks amazing.

IMO Ubisoft should have poached from former Akella talent and just done a new pirate IP. What are a lot of them working on now? Tempest aka Jolly Roger.

What I find strange is Ubisoft was quick to push out AC Rogue which -- minus the pirate storyline -- capitalized on many of the same aspects of Black Flag... and yet... Ubisoft couldn't get Skull & Bones out-the-door.
Well, rogue was more of a dlc for black flag. Can’t remember any story, all I remember is it ended after a short time, and very abruptly. Freedoms cry is probably not much shorter. It’s a big switch going from single player to mmo though, and it really shows when it happens. DA: Inquisition for example, feels like origins, but you can tell it was meant to be an mmo. KoAmalaur is another. Lots of big open areas, then very little actual content, or reason to be in them other than endless fetch quests.

Sorry, was trying to do too many things yesterday and didn't pay enough attention to what I was writing...

Yes, what I initially meant to write was that since many fans wanted a straight pirate IP -- and since Ubi put out AC Rogue somewhat quickly -- it would have seemed relatively easy for Ubi to simply release a pirate game. Very little would have needed to be done differently outside of story.

As for Skull & Bones...

... yes, I agree.... an MMO is a different beast, but it sounds like they had a strong proof-of-concept that was essentially MP Black Flag ship battles that then got a big re-think due to a want (audience or management?) of land activities. At this point I would rather they released that and then built on the idea instead of... nothing.

What I find funny is when Sea of Thieves released and it looked like a joke... cartoony (although amazing wave work!) and very limited gameplay options. But over time the art direction grew on many and the gameplay keeps expanding.

Guess I'll have to watch Black Sails, read some Sabatini, drink some rum, and come to terms with this game never coming out.

Yep sea of thieves could be good. It’s M$ of course, so that throws me off. Also the focus on multiplayer even if not mmo. Could be good though. Yeah, black sails was a suprise, really enjoyed it. Really captured treasure island quite well. There is always ravens cry, if someone could mod in a decent controller, fix the bugs, sort out the graphics etc…
Sea of thieves is one of the most empty, boring game I've ever tried. I don't get the hype for it at all.
