Is this a subject I can contribute to? I feel I may be the wrong kind of person to talk about Christmas shows, but I'll give it a try.
I'm not much into tradition and rituals, which means I don't watch the regulars on TV (or radio). In fact, after a few years I got tired of the same musics, same movies, same decorations and often I don't feel that much the season's spirit and only tag along for the sake of the family. It is nice to see the young ones filled with excitement, though. It was fun, one year, to leave some "tracks" of Santa Claus' visit that were poorly covered and seed doubt in their minds for one more season.
There is one movie that, oddly enough, I did enjoy more than I expected. It is also a movie that happens during Christmas, so I suppose it qualifies as a Christmas movie. It is "The Family Man" with Nicholas Cage.
The story is quite simple and predictable enough, there were some good performances, the budget was modest and tells a personal story with small stakes (nobody saving Christmas, escaping nazis or anything of the sort). But I think it is impossible to watch this movie without falling in love with Téa Leoni's character.
And I suppose "Die Hard" and "The Nighmare Before Christmas" may also be considered as Christmas movies. They are also fine. Sadly I have nothing on the radio.
What do I dislike? I guess that the limited set of popular Christmas musics. There is a vast repertoire to choose from but only half of dozen keep popping up. And every year some artists try to tap into the royalties provided by this "tradition".
On the TV I wish there was more variety and more chances to escape the subject and the tropes. At least that was my wish when I saw TV.
This year I planned to watch some of the oldies, from the '30s and '40s, but I'll be scanning some recommendations in this list for alternatives.
I would feel honoured and appreciative if I could be included for participation in your package dropping endeavour.
