ciemnogrodzianin: In Poland it has become a tradition (and also a subject of jokes and memes) that main TV channels shows Home Alone every Christmas. No Christmas without Kevin in Poland :D Does it work the same in Russia perhaps?
As I don't have traditional TV for over a dozen years, I haven't watched the movie for years. But last year we wanted to show the classic to our kids and we made cinema evening before Christmas. And you know – it was awesome! :D I remembered watching it in childhood, but it's still so good! This year we should definitely make the same with HA2.

I forgot about Die Hard! This indeed is perfect for Christmas. I have to refresh the movie this year, thanks!
By the way – that's interesting how many movies tries to catch that theme and specific atmosphere of the year and how few of them really suceed.

Anyhow. Yeah, it's a good movie. People argue that it isn't a Christmas movie, but my thought is, McLean went all the way to LA to try and reconcile with his wife, and then goes through Hell and sacrifices his own well being for their sake. It's bloody and violent, but at it's core it is about giving of yourself to help others. If that isn't the Christmas Spirit, then I don't know what is.

Also, Die Hard and Home Alone are very similar. One is just a far grittier more adult version of improvising traps for intruders while staying stealthy.

... but I absolutely LOVE Christmas Vacation. Seriously, I watch it whenever I see it's on this time of year (I've probably caught snippets of it three times already since Thanksgiving). I don't watch too much TV but if I flick it on after dinner to catch the news and see this on I'm there. NEVER gets old, every joke and gag is as good (better?) as the first time. Something about the movie is just perfect (probably Chevy Chase).

I also really like those creepy old stop motion classic Christmas movies - with Santa as a young man, Mr. Heatmeister, etc. They're strange but I enjoy them.

Well, yeah. I never said it didn't :P I was just saying how it applied to Die Hard. :P But I agree, Gremlins was a good Christmas flick.

Enebias: For me there is really no special Christmas movie, but in my country "Trading Places" has become a sort of tradition; one of the main TV emitters before anything "on demand" became all the rage used to air it every single Christmas Eve, and lately they have proudly (and jokingly) announced they will never break the habit. Honestly, as far as I can remember that movie has really always being aired then, so -excluding the distant past I have no memory of- it has been going on for at least 25 years.

EDIT: btw, I can totally recommend Tokyo Godfathers as well, a great title form a great director who left us way too soon.

Woohoo, this again! I'm in, and thank you for the chance!

Die Hard 1 & 2, and Christmas Vacation are favorites of mine as well. A cousin of mine and I had a "disagreement" on whether the Die Hard movies are Christmas-y enough. I had to respond with a snapshot of the scene where McClain is blown to the sky having for a backdrop fire and ice. If that doesn't scream Christmas, I don't know what does.

Nightmare Before Christmas is also another favorite, as well as Hogfather. However, I've seen Die Hard 1 & 2 during the Christmas season more times than the others mentioned.

My absolute favorite for Christmas though has to be A Garfield Christmas Special!

Thank you PeterAlf for the iniziative! First of all +1 and kudos to zlaywal for the Tokyo Godfathers entry, original choice and great movie from a director who left us too early.
I haven't rewatched it in my adulthood but the Gremlins exercised a stong impact on my imagination as a child and I'd like to mention the 3rd installment in the series, that has that Christmas touch.

I am personally not the biggest Christmas person when it comes to songs but some of the movies are good.
My favorite Christmas movie is either Santa Claus or Home Alone, I always love watching the Christmas Story every year on Christmas day because there is a channel that always plays it for 24 hours on Christmas.
Which Santa Claus is that? I only know the Santa Clause, with Tim Allen. Is that the one?

My favorite Chrismas movies are the whole Die Hard series.
There's also the non-official-die-hard-movie-by-other-name which is The Last Boy Scout.

As for TV Specials, I don't have any.

For radio shows, I like the BBC's broadcast of the 12 Lessons and Carols service at King's College, Cambridge.

Me and my family's favorite holiday movie is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Most Christmas movies deal with how joyful the season is but Christmas Vacation shows all the things that regularly goes wrong. Like having to deal with the annoying in-laws or figuring why the Christmas lights aren't working. The reason why it's enjoyable is because it's relatable (though I don't think I've ever had a squirrel in the Christmas Tree, but there's always a first time for everything :D ). Is some of it over-the-top? Yeah, but then it wouldn't be as funny. We religiously watch it every year to remind ourselves that the Holidays could always be worse.
Great movie! Last time I watched it is years ago, and my kids will probably enjoy it, so I think it will go on this year's list

Yet another cool giveaway. I'm in!

Over the years i had many favourite movies to watch on christmas. Stuff like the commonly remembered Die Hard, Christmas Vacation, Planes, Trains and Automobilies, Trading Places, Gremlins,... But with streaming services, we don't really need to wait till christmas to watch them again. Don't get me wrong, i still love these.

But the last couple of years i've rather prefering stuff like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Lucky Number Slevin, Layer Cake, Shoot 'Em Up.... movies with plot twists and a rather different kind humour. Most of these are not even christmas related, yet somehow it's being great revisiting them each year.

I'd recommend Tokyo Godfathers, an anime from one the genre's great, the late Satoshi Kon. It's about 3 homeless people that found a baby on Christmas Eve. AS with Kon's more celebrated works like Millennium Actress and Paprika, the movies contain roller-coaster of emotion with critique of Japanese society.

Merry Christmas for those who celebrated and for those who don't may we all enjoy the holiday season, in spite the crazy pandemic this world going through now.
I can't believe I still haven't seen that one. It's been on my to-watch list for many many years :/ and I almost exclusively watch animated films now for the past 6-7 years (almost).

As for traditional movies or TV shows.
From czech movies my favorite is Pelíšky. Though it's not primarily about Christmas, that movie begins in this period.
From foreign movie, I also like mentioned Home Alone. It's movie from my childhood. I watch it regurarly everytime.
Local televisions are very conservative. Since christmas period is mainly about fairy tales, they airing quantum of that. In very poor quality at all. So only chance to escape are action movies like Die Hard.

I would like to join if you don't mind. :)
