Themken: About discs: One can do real finds at flea markets, especially games with licenses as they usually must not be sold new after a certain date. There are 'disc' versions of games where all the disc contains is a downloader for Steam's client...
Yes, sorry, very good point. Be careful about discs after 2010 (ish) as they can only contain the steam client. Also, avoid anything which states Games For Windows Live, as that's dead. Older games tend to be ok, some need nocd's - securom for instance is a real pain, and M$ dropped support for it in Win 10, which is good, but does mean you need nocd.

nightcraw1er.488: Cool, thanks. Hadn't heard of this one. Website looks a bit awful...
Then check out the screenshots from their upcoming ZOOM Platform redesign in the news section:

Notice the background image in the first one - ladies and gentlemen, we have a contender! :D

Yes, looks way better than the current design. And they have lots of games that GOG do not have, including some recently removed games like Race Grid and Duke Nukem games.

ZFR: ^In addition to those, remember you could always check eBay. I still look there for my DRM/Client-free games. Sometimes you can get physical CDs for a price that's even cheaper than GOG. Just make sure to check you're buying real CD and not Steam keys or CDs that actually contain a Steam installer.
This, I still buy disc versions of old games I can't find on here, actually just snagged sim city classic on there yesterday. And the prices are usually pretty damn good, depending on the game of course.

Yes, looks like it. I wonder where they took the inspiration for their new look from? ;-)
And as far as I see no regional pricing, no region locks and no backhanded client software. Just like GOG once was.
Of course they don't have a big catalogue yet, but GOG started small too!

You know you want it (like a goose craves gavage)!

At least they're subtly warning us well in advance. ;)
What ZOOM is missing though is a forum. Or am I too stupid to find it?
I haven't heard anything about fireflowergames and zoom-platform before.
Has anyone used any of them?

I'm interested in the two Dawn of Magic games, which are both available on fireflowergames.

I've bought Theatre of War from Fireflowergames last year and the game is DRM-free and works without problems for me, so I would buy from them again. Didn't have to contact support, so I can't say how good it is.

Impaler26: ZOOM Platform is another DRM-Free store.
Very nice, looks a promising contender.

Thanks for the reply. It's really helpful.
I will buy those games then.

I've bought quite a few games from FireFlower (like Venetica and the UFO Trilogy) and didn't have any issue with them. I've bought Killing Time from Zoom Platform and it was also a painless procedure.

If you are still on the fence, register an account on those sites and add Heroine's Quest from FireFlower Games and Death Rally from the Zoom Platform. Both games are free (and not available here yet), so you if you don't like it, then you won't have wasted any money at all.

Thanks Grargar.
I will register. Venetica is one more title I'd like to try!

I just did that for Zoom, downloaded the file, installed, played. Was all quite simple, though the website could do with some work on it. A few games there that I haven't found anywhere else. Will try Fireflower later on.
