I approve. But let's face it: anything beyond the XSEED-published titles is very unlikely to come here. Plus anything that doesn't have a MS-DOS or Windows port developed by Falcom themselves, so Sorcerian Original and Dinosaur Resurrection are much likelier than Drasle Family and the original Dinosaur.

You mentioned Vantage Master, but Lord Monarch is freeware as well.

Hopefully they will come here before it would be necessary to learn japanese or to buy on Steam.

If GOG can contact and license/ask to use openMSX + Panasonic's turbo-R system ROMs, then games like Maze of Gailous and Drasle Family can then come to the site after rights are negotiated and the final package tested. Same situation for Neko Project II and the original Dinosaur, though I wouldn't prioritize that one over the remake.

Falcom games are an easy choice for introducing this site to Japanese PC games. Just don't use Sierra's inaccurate Sorcerian port!

I just remembered that the officially emulated Project EGG versions are available as well (and there's this beauty), but getting them on GOG would probably be a bureaucratic nightmare or even impossible.

I'd rather go back to consoles then (and learn japanese too ;-) ) Are the boxed versions of Project EGG games DRM-free or have they an online DRM with a monthly fee like digital games of the platform?

I would like copies of these games without any DRM.

Regardless of whether GOG can get permission to host these games, they still need to be hacked for translation; in the case of text adventures, they might even need rewritten parsers! I expect to see fan translations many years from now, followed by licensing that hard work so the games can be sold to new audiences. With this kind of support, Artdink could make a new Tokio city-building game; former members of Riverhill Soft/CING could regroup to make a Hotel Dusk/J.B. Harold crossover.

One approach to making the games available to non-Japanese speakers would be to host complementary English-patched ROMs of games on EGG. The company might be rigid compared to GOG, and shackled by the companies it licenses from—there's a subscription fee in place so that all the rights-holders have a guaranteed revenue stream from Amusement Center. But if international users buy these games thanks to English patching, they're more likely then to make a deal with GOG than anyone else. EGG would, however, make sure GOG only has English versions of games available to prevent their home customers from switching. Our site has free membership and frequent sales, and there's no getting past self-deprecating pricing in Japan...for the moment.

Alternatively, GOG can negotiate with the rights-holders directly. WOOMB, the long-gone Dutch online store for MSX games, cracked a deal with the smoldering remains of T&E Soft and Micro Cabin, allowing them to sell official translations of Rune Worth, Fray, and the Xak games. No reason why a Polish company with more resources can't do the same, especially if they want old, interesting PC games that few knew they wanted. Some companies are more receptive to the idea than others; some need a role model of success. Falcom's a J-PC giant that, time and time again, has been disappointed by scattershot localization. Now XSEED's selling loads of Ys and new Kiseki games on Steam, and Falcom communicated this to their shareholders. If we buy them on GOG as well, the long crawl shall start for smaller publishers and rights-holders to take advantage of the market. Boxed games have installers without DRM.

You can actually keep all the games you buy through EGG in your account library without having to subscribe monthly. If you play a game at least once, you'll still have access to it after your payment period passes. The EGG launcher itself won't update unless you subscribe again, essentially forcing you to pay up once the newest games come out requiring a new launcher, but you could buy all of the 500-yen games within one month and have most of their library ready to play.

I will consider the boxes (more than digital distribution because, like I did for Trails in the Sky, I am considering buying digital games when they are translated or when DRM-free; when the games are japanese only, I am more reluctant to do so and prefer buying physical editions even if I don't fully understand japanese -mainly because of goodies ;-)).

Won't vote myself, but I will continue doing a little bit to encourage the appearance of the Ys games as they have a chunky number of votes.
