Because it is now The End for Windows 7 and I am still running one.

And I am very concerned for my security running this computer online.

And worse if I am to upgrade to 10, I have to do a clean install upgrade, that means deleting a lot of stuff I have on my PC. Especially the most hard things to redownload and install like some games that are modded and just big games like World of Warcraft.

There's another topic about it here. In the short-term, there's really no serious security issues at all, so there's no real rush to upgrade. As for remembering how you modded games, it's definitely worth writing down what you did to mod it, backup any mods you used, etc, even if you don't upgrade purely to make things easier for the future (eg, if your hard drive fails or gets replaced in future, you'll have to know how to reinstall them anyway).

AB2012 is right that if you're smart about your internet usage there's no immediate concern, however I wouldn't put it off forever. Also Windows 10 is fine, no reason to avoid it IMO as a casual user.

I'd also say you'll be fine for a few years at least. HW and SW ceasing to work on Win7 in the future would be a bigger concern to me than potential security issues.

AFAIK, most mods don't change/add registry entries or add folders outside the game folder.
So just backup your modded game folders (on a non-system drive), reinstall the vanilla games, and replace those folders with the back-upped ones.

You are planning on making backups, right?

Why would you lose data during a clean install? You back it up, you upgrade, you put it back...

I know, I have a Windows 10 Laptop as a back up computer.

I am just a little worried about compatibility, my GOG games, I have these installers before Windows 10 came out.

My suggestion as always is to sail to a new port and give Linux a whirl. Sure, there's a minor learning curve, but if you miss tweaking, come and try it.

I suggest Fedora because let's face it, software and hardware doesn't move on a LTS cycle.

Take the Linux leap!

TBH M$ stopping fiddling with it will probably improve it.

Win10 is ok, it seems to always be updating, and then classic shell needs resetting, and apps keep appearing even though I don’t want them, and you have to check settings a lot in case they reenable the send all my credit card details feature (I.e. all the helpful telemetry and such like).
But it works, with some tweaking, and I haven’t had any compatibility issues.

So haven't tweaked the updating behaviour? (Yes you can! Well... I can)*


*edit: I mean: not just disabling the update service... leaving it on while at the same time never being forced to update.

It's always a gamble... but a lot less than it used to be. ;-)
