gog2002x: I got it installed on my Win7 machine currently and I think I got it at an abandomware site. My install worked fine and I didn't use DgVoodoo2, but it's nice to know there are other options.

I also didn't know Gamersgate sold it, oh well lol. Though I did own the retail version a couple times (does that count? lol) and it's a neat little game. Each of the 3 classes has some variations to the story and gameplay, so some replayability.
.
Windows 10 and 11 have different API's and need extra things for certain games to work, and less things for other games to work. This has already been solved, but thanks.
DgVoodoo is indeed every retro gamer's best friend.

If that fails, which can very occasionally happen, I can also recommend either DxWnd:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/

or nGlide:

DxWnd is awesome. It's how I got Entomorph to work flawlessly on Win7.

Thanks, this is helpful for games that never got the gog treatment!

Ah well, I do have another SSD drive for Win10 and dx12 capable games. :)

Win7 is for my older games that use dx11 and below, so I figured why not lol and these games rarely needed extra steps to run after installation.

Knowing me, I'll eventually have another SSD for Win11 lol. (I'm probably being wasteful, ouch, though for now my MB can't install Win11 anyway)
.
So the intro screen is fine, it doesn't show green boxes everywhere, but once I load past the intro movie, it's worse green boxes than without dxvoodoo2.

I've messed around with the settings a lot and at this point feel it's something that I cannot easily fix even with dgvoodoo2.

I feel for most people, this is the proper solution, but it just will not work for me. Thanks anyway.

(if you're playing it with a video card)Did you try to run it through your PC's onboard graphics chipset instead?

I don't have an onboard chipset in my desktop, but it's a thought to consider for someone who does.

Are you trying it patched and with DGVoodoo2? Maybe try it unpatched with DGVoodoo2?
Also maybe try fiddling with the settings in DGVoodoo2 a bit?
According to MobyGames, Harbinger runs on DirectX 8.1, and there are almost no wrappers for DirectX 8.1.

Maybe this one might work for you:

So shortly after my post, I got some fixes in this thread, then at some point the game broke again.

Yesterday, Windows 11 had a couple of updates, so I updated the machine, rebooted, and forgot about Harbinger as per usual.

Today, I went in, removed all compatibility settings from Harbinger, fired it up, and it WORKS again!

I'm 99% certain I still have the wrapper on it from before, so I'm wondering if the compatibility options messed with the wrapper in my attempt to make the game run better, and I had a self fulfilling prophecy of the game not working.

TL;DR - if you use the wrapper marked as the solution in this thread, do not have any compatibility options set for the Harbinger exe.
Just a heads up, I fixed it on both an Nvidia machine and an AMD machine (relating to graphics cards) by removing the compatibility options.

You can usually get this game for $5 on GMG, and I highly recommend it. I've started two playthroughs, one on each machine, and since I'll only be able to use a less powerful machine for a while, I'm planning on doing the robot playthrough on it first.

I've recommended this game to both Darth Microtransactions, and MrLlamaSC, but who knows if they'll ever check it out.

Take care,

-BD
