Greetings,

I am aware this is the general discussion and I am aware GOG does not currently sell Harbinger. There is no Harbinger sub forum, so I am asking this here.

On two machines, one laptop with a 3050, and one desktop which previously used a 5700 xt and now uses a 6800 xt, when Harbinger launches it has green boxes around everything.

It's definitely a type of display error, which I was originally told was tied to AMD, but as it happens with the 3050, that tells me it's a dependency error or something in Windows. I've tried every type of compatibility fix, as well as enabling legacy options > directplay, and nothing seems to work.

The only time the game has displayed properly was briefly during a driver update for the 5700 xt in 2021, and briefly when I was using a friend's 1080ti before it died.

So while I want to say it's 100% driver related, again this has happened over nvidia and amd cards.

I'm just wondering if anyone has resolved this without registry tweaks. Something hopefully easy. If you have, let me know, I'll throw some rep cookies your way if you help me solve it.

Dunno mate. I've tried to get the game running (old gamersgate version) running on a few machines now and had different issues with each.
Some it just crashed.
Others i had similar issues to yourself.
Oldest (old laptop still on winXP) it overloaded the thing (it was above specs).
Interested to see results.

Also, hope yer well!

Hey! Long time no chat! I kind of disappeared for a bit. Looks like things have stabilized at least in the boards I frequent on here, so I'm back.

I'd be really interested if any of our retro specialists have found a fix. The game just randomly works at times and then Windows updates and breaks something in it. So I'm still hopeful it's some DLL fix I can just copy and paste, but who knows.

I hope you're doing alright as well!
Does that happen with the demo too?

Aye not too terrible right now.

I remember a thread on the game from years ago (maybe 2015) - prob the reason i bought it. i remember licurg being a prominent poster in it and some mentions of fixes (for the time). cant find it myself, but maybe somebody bookmarked it.
I just tried the game on Linux and it seems to run ok (with a crack). Seems like installing the 1.02 patch may be a bit tricky though.. (not sure if it's really needed). Looks like they fixed a green box issue a decade ago:

Not sure if it's the demo. I can search and see if there's a patch but tbh I just kind of assumed there wasn't since I bought it off GG.

Doesn't help me since I'm using Windows, but I appreciate it.

I just tested the demo with my PC and it ran great on an Intel NUC 11 Essential N6005.
In gamepressure.com they have a v1.10 patch available.

I installed patch 1.10 which broke my game and it refused to launch. I'm about to give up on this one if nobody has any other suggestions within the next week or so.

Thank you, though.

csanjuro: have you tried DgVoodoo2?
I have installed this game(bought on gamersgate long ago)
on several machines, including the current one i'm using now(Win 10 64 bit).
Iirc, it needs a wrapper/etc like the one csanjuro mentioned(DgVoodoo2).

p.s. if it works, make sure to give csanjuro the solution/answer :)

oooh

I will check it out before bed, thanks!

EDIT: I'm not an overly emotional man, but I've been trying to get this game to work for like 4 years now. Thank you, kind internet stranger. Enjoy the meaningless rep cookies for solution, unfortunately it's the best I can do.

There is precious little info on this bug anywhere but toms hardware, and they didn't have the solution.

Maybe somebody in 2025 will google it and come here, and perhaps buy a copy of Police Quest in celebration.

Thanks again!

EDIT 2: In case someone comes here and isn't sure, this solution works.

glad I could be of help
I got it installed on my Win7 machine currently and I think I got it at an abandomware site. My install worked fine and I didn't use DgVoodoo2, but it's nice to know there are other options.

I also didn't know Gamersgate sold it, oh well lol. Though I did own the retail version a couple times (does that count? lol) and it's a neat little game. Each of the 3 classes has some variations to the story and gameplay, so some replayability.
