We all hate when our save games are deleted.
Or when our monitor blows during intense firefight. (Wow, these games are so real! Wait. Uh oh.)

Share your story!

Ok, I admit, I want to hear that I'm not alone with these. I've had ~15 hours in Legend of Grimrock 2 and I've noticed some graphical glitches while exploring pyramid. Light might be pretty important in some riddles in this game. I'm running Linux and I wanted to see if newer Wine could solve these glitches. So I switched Wine version and Grimrock decided that it should delete all my savegames because of that...

I got to lvl 19 in the original Commandos, the 2nd last mission in which you have to blow up V2 rockets. Then I went to a LAN party where we had severe problems trying to connect to each other. Then my best friend, who was the computer wiz among us, decided to format and reinstall windows on my system in a desperate attempt to fix the connection issues. He didn't back up my saves :-\
I think it was about 15 years later that I finally decided to try the game. But that time I finished it :) Still haven't beaten Beyond the Call of Duty though. Got stuck on the last mission.

I once flipped that 'wattage switch' on my psu forgetting that my pc was still plugged in. BANG! Left a gaping hole in the side of the psu case, which looked a lot like someone fired a revolved from inside the psu.

I finished the entire Warcraft 1 campaign, humans and orcs, without knowing about the drag select feature :P

I was playing Baldur's Gate and Final Fantasy 8 in parallel, both for the very first time (wow, makes me realize I had all the time in the world back then). I was very close to beating both, and in fact, I was at the final boss of FF (~60hr in). Tried to beat it a few times, couldn't, but figured out a winning strategy to try the next day... alas my PSU fried that night.

I was a kid and nobody around knew about computers back then. Dad took the box to a service to have it looked at. Turns out the PSU didn't take anything else with it, that's good news. Except the idiot technician had thought it would be a good idea to format my disk while at it "as part of the routine". Many great hours of my youth were lost that day.

I immediately replayed FF day & night, and beat it the next week. Good times.

Not my own story, but my friend got Final Fantasy 8 on release day, played it for probably about a week straight, got to disc 3. I came over to check it out, he started a new game to show me the beginning and the plot and stuff, went to save the new game, and accidently saved over his disc 3 game. He dropped the controller and left the room. He hasn't played that game ever since.

I have a pretty recent one from just two years ago. Was playing Payday 2 on Steam and suddenly I start seeing bad graphics glitches and my frame rate takes a dive. My first ever GPU death since my first self-built (with alot of gog community help) PC from 2012. I chalk it up to a faulty GPU as it was acting funny with random monthly coil whine that would appear with the Windows Aero theme being temporarily disabled during the whine. Got it replaced/repaired through warranty and haven't had a problem since, though I better shut up before I jinx it. :P

The gaping hole was probably caused by capacitors blowing up. These are nasty things. In school, I've always told that the big ones could be used as a makeshift weapon.

Losing my FF3US (really Final Fantasy 6, but called 3) save because the battery in the cartridge died; it would no longer keep a save, so I had to exchange the cartridge for a new one.

My last save was in the World of Ruin before it disappeared.

Also, using Game Genie with Final Fantasy 2US, I talked to Golbez when he isn't supposed to be reachable, and the game glitched and destroyed 2 saves.

Final Fantasy Legend (Game Boy, really SaGa 1), I saved at a point where I had to fight a boss to escape, and couldn't kill the boss with my party. Because of the game's horrible RNG, getting lucky was not possible.

Indiana Jones and The Fate of Atlantis: Played it at my cousin's home together with her. We were stuck before (pre-Internet times), but solved the puzzle and played for hours and always used the same slot to save. Got to part where Sophia and Indy are on the German U-boat. Try to talk down the ladder, Indy warns that there is somebody (it's off screen). Try something. Try to go down think 'Good point to save'. Indy goes down and gets captured and killed by the German seamen. Reload the save game. It's impossible to stop Indy from using the ladder to go down :-/

I got stuck about halfway through Eternal Darkness thanks to a glitch which made a vital item disappear somehow. This was on my second attempt through the game (I don't really like horror games but was determined to win this one) and I never played it again.

I'm fairly sure I've accidentally saved over important saves, though I can't remember any specific instances of doing so. Also generally forgetting to save in RPGs and then having to reload before difficult battles, not quite a catastrophe but annoying as hell. And it tends to happen a lot... :/

Actually, the worst I had happen in Final Fantasy was a group of Sorcerers killing my mages when I was trying to get the Masamune, making the whole 30+ minute playing session a waste.

The Final Fantasy Legend Gameboy games caused a fair amount of fraternal strife back when I was a kid, because I was a stupid little kid and kept accidentally overwriting my older brother's save files; I don't know that I've ever had what I'd call a catastrophe happen to me, personally though.

(edit: Actually, yes, many hours into Final Fantasy Adventure, when I had to quit because I got stuck in a dungeon without any keys. I think I could have killed skeletons or something until they dropped some, but I didn't know that at the time. A bad moment.)

Bought Fallaout NV and Skyrim before I knew much about Steam. A few months later, my PC went phut, and since I had this one steam doesn't let me login. So I know how much I enjoy these two games, but "Daddy" won't let me play.

Since then, if a game needs Steam I just don't bother atall.

Then I discovered GOG.....!

Like I tell my children, find a silver lining and hang on tight.

Pokemon Silver and Crystal battery running dry on me... I had mew, celebi, something less than 10 shinies, a pokerus in pc, completed pokedex and endless play hours...

After that, i traded all games i had for Yugi Oh rare cards. And utilized emulation exclusively, instead of handhelds and consoles.

You had connection problems at a LAN party? Oh, no way i can believe that, Microsoft always make sure their operating systems to connect with ease.... just one question, can extreme sarcasm on such a level could cause my head to explode??!! *boom*
