triple_l: SS FE and SE are masterpieces
Serious Sam 2 is a mediocre childish console port that doesn't deserve a vote click

shaboo_de: Actually, I prefer SS 2 over SS FE and SS SE - better graphics, much more variety and less tiring because of fewer enemies. All SS games are cartoonish, but I don't see where SS 2 is that much more childish than other SS games.
First/Second was far better. High speed frenetic run N gun action. High octane sound track. Humorous quips throughout. It was the end of that era. As you say, the second one had better graphics, but to my mind that detracted from the basic premise of the genre, in the first I could see bad guys a mile away, in this half the time I couldn't see them in front of me due to the wonderfully graphic heavy grass and foliage everywhere. Its a bit of a misconception that better graphics = better game. The only interesting idea was the balls you get in to run things over with, other than that the weapons felt more like toys, charge up your pew pew gun for instance. Not that story is particularly necessary in these, I felt 2 had too much of one, too invasive, that having to go to X to save square shaped dudes from round shaped dudes. Needless, just need a backdrop, a large area and swarms of bulls making you crap yourself every 2 minutes.

Just my opinion :o) Never played Serious Sam 3 - The DRM Infection, so no idea on that.

tinyE: Doom 3 is coming here? How did they pull that off? I have it on disc and I still can't play it because of the DRM so I can't imagine it would get anywhere near this place.

InfraSuperman: Have you tried applying the final patch? It removes the copy protection entirely.

Note: I have not tried this particular version of the patch. Proceed with caution.
I just tried this. It still tells me to enter the key and it still tells me the key is invalid.

Same shit, but thanks for trying.

WAIT, it just worked. :P sorry for the necro

timppu: Also the remakes of the first two Serious Sam's, thank you.

The originals are still good games (and there are even some things I prefer in them over the remakes), but still.
Agreed. Serious Sam HD versions are better. They have ragdoll physics too.
GOG definitely needs Doom 3!

But seeing later Serious Sam games on GOG would be nice! :P

Some things I still like better in the original(s):

- Obviously they have lower HW requirements. The originals run great also on e.g. my work laptop (while still looking great), while the newer ones I have to play on my more powerful gaming laptop.

- I don't like that much how they changed those vast plain deserts on the first game to undulating dunes. Now I keep hitting the dunes with the rockets, when I want to shoot to the horizon.

- Oddly, here and there the original seems to have some graphics effects that are missing in the HD remake, at least for me. For instance in the swimming pool room on the first level, the HD remake is missing the dancing lights on the walls mirrored from the water (but instead it has a mirror effect on the pool water itself, which seems quite heavy to calculate).

But, 90% of the remakes is improved. It would be nice to have them here too.

The biggest issue I have with the HD remakes is that they removed local coop from them. I don't care how much some people insist that splitscreen gaming on PC is not fun / impractical or whatever. Back in the day I beat the entire original Serious Sam with my buddy in splitscreen on a 19" screen and it was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had and whoever decided to remove that feature from the remakes is a jackass (like any other developer ever who has scrapped splitscreen in the PC version of a game which had it on console).

So if CroTeam released Serious Sam 1st and 2nd Encounter to GOG, how come we still haven't seen the later games on here?

According to someone from Croteam:
"if GoG supported Steam keys, they would be selling Talos now. But as the situation is now, even if they had the API comparable to Steam, it wouldn't be worth the development time, since their market share is much lower. Shrug. "

Also keep in mind that Croteam implemented their own DRM on Serious Sam 3 and Talos Principles to make them unplayable without Steam.

That's a shame. DRM has wrecked so many games; I really wish game devs would stop supporting it. :(

I was just going to point out Croteam's remarkably childish attitude about this.

Their claim - which I don't have the quote to hand for - was that DRM-free didn't have achievements or leaderboards, which supposedly essentially made it pointless to release. Aside from the hilarity surrounding achievement obsessions, The Talos Principle doesn't even HAVE leaderboards, and the Steam version of Serious Sam 2 was simply the retail version stripped of the DVD copy protection - no achievements, no leaderboards, in fact, I believe there's no working multiplayer any more either.

They're remarkably talented developers, but they do need to grow up and move away from using fanboy instincts to justify bizarre business decisions.

Remarkably talented developers, but their creativity for excuses is somewhat dinosaur like.
I don't own their games... I was just calling them remarkable because you did :)

There is.
