d3adb01t: Has a video game ever managed to scare you?
Sure. First and foremost:

Resident Evil...let's just call it "the doberman scene", to avoid spoilers
(does anybody exist at this point, who hasn't played or at least watched that scene?)

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines...the Ocean House hotel.

Thief - the dark project...the Haunted Cathredral.

Thief 3 - deadly shadows...the Shalebridge Cradle.
Silent Hill 2 gave me creepiest wibes. I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Clive Barker´s Undying and Doom 3 gave me few jump scares.
The Eye of the Beholder bosses always scared me as a child. First there was the grotesque alien appearance of Xanathar, maw dripping with saliva. Then came the evil high priest Dran who made some very expressive faces accentuating his fangs, as if struggling to hold his human form before succumbing completely to the transformation.
When Humpty Dumpty fell off the wall in Mixed-Up Mother Goose. :-o

(@GOG: btw: where is that game? :-P Would love to see both the EGA as the VGA here!)
Dead Space is also pretty scary... The sequel wasn't so good but that kindergarten part was creepy.
My brother, sister and me as kids watching my dad play Dungeon Master. The first time he got caught in a dead end by a rock monster was terrifying!
The closest thing as an adult would be Demon's Souls when I was in the Tower of Latria levels, the combination of the gothic horror theme with the fear of losing my collected souls created a bit of realistic feeling fear and excitement the first time I played.

krugos2: As a kid I was scared of some of my Commodore 64 games, I think the scariest of them all was Forbidden Forest. :)
I remember that game, it was scary! Was this the same guy that did Aztec Challenge?

I'm usually playing at night (no lights) with headphones on, so.. : )
Nightmare House 2
SCP-087
Thief 3. The Shalebridge Cradle.

Noped straight the fuck out of it as soon as I got to the White Hall.

Similarly noped out of Amnesia: The Dark Descent when the walls started bleeding.

Cavalary: Oh yes, respawn of... anything in that one made me give up. But not because it was scary in that way, just... wearing you down and no point in it all, keep having to deal with the same things in the same areas time and time again as I kept wandering around, and using up stuff I wasn't getting back by looting them, just said no way I'll keep putting up with that and gave up.

Telika: Respawn could be turned off, or dramatically toned down, through the .ini file or the difficulty options, if I remember well. I considered this as a prequisite. For me, anguish functions better through the emptiness of corridors and the believability of enemy presences than through the gamey mowing down of magical zombie crowds.
Oh yeah, tiresome. Not exactly a scare mechanic, but one where I'd abuse the quick save. Can't recall if there was an f5 quick save feature in system shock 2 but since theres no logical explanation why a zombie materialized behind me and smashed me down I just sticked to watching other peoples letsplays.

Maybe if combat was fun but I never got good at swinging a spanner in that game.

That thief 3 ghost house, yeah, I remember watching frozen foxy's letsplay on that. Good stuff.
This thread reminded me of dark fear , a indie horror game that should be on gog made a thread for it .

The first game that gave me the chills was unreal i was just migrating from 2d platforms and doom .....speaking of doom ...doom 3 was a nightmare to play back then...
As a few hv mention here, Doom 3 gave me quite a bit of scare especially i was playing it with pretty much all the lights in my room off & i was wearing earphones 2 prevent disturbing ppl in the middle of the night. Lol.

I get into my games so let's crack this list out,

Obligatory

CoD 3 for Wii, one of the story characters dies flat on their stomach and then does a 180 headspin to deliver his dieing words; I of course had to be 14 and t-bagging him which put my camera directly in front of his face as he did this.

Snacker from Banjo

The overwhelming force of Dr. Salvador and his compadres.

The Peach portrait that changes to Bowser

Every time.

And then finally, the king of childhood anxiety insta-kills.
Quote to get around the stupid 'can't post links' bs.
