I had actually seen that a couple of days ago.. and it's just weird.
Unless it's just based on GITS.

Not surprised in the least.

Is something about the script known? Does the story take place in Japan? Or are they westernizing the story in the same way they did with Edge of Tomorrow?

Hollywood adapting manga is going to be a disaster in any case. But yes, the casting on this one also stinks.

So we have the female version of Keanu Reeves being casted as Spike Speigel in that rumored Cowboy Bebop live action movie?

HAHAHA... Never was a big fan of GITS, but still, what sacrilege :)

I know this isn't going to be a popular opinion, but I think she is a great choice and the promotional photo of her looks excellent. Regardless of the character's name or the location of the story, Masamune Shirow does not draw the characters in Ghost in the Shell as Japanese people. Most of the cast of Ghost in the Shell are modeled after non-Asian races. Combined with the fact that the English voice of Kusanagi, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, is a white woman, casting Scarlett Johansson as Kusanagi is pretty accurate when compared to the look of the character and the sound of her English speaking voice.

I get that saying this during a time when so many people are concerned with and fighting against the white-washing of acting roles in Hollywood may be cast in poor light, but it is how I feel in this specific situation. My main concern with the adaptation of comics, cartoons and video games to live-action is whether that interpretation is faithful to the source material and, in the case of Ghost in the Shell, I feel that the casting of Scarlett Johansson and the look of the character's design are accurate.

Hollywood is shit since around 20 years ago anyway. Whichever actress was going to be in it, it's destined to fail epically. The manga is awesome though.

And WTF is Hollywood doing touching Japanese media? They ran all the franchises they can milk into the ground or something? Don't they know Japanese media isn't social activism based?
