I really loved how in Gothic and Risen you had to work so hard for your spells. Is there any other games where getting a spells is so rewarding? I love going from guy sweeping the floor to ultimate mage of doom. XP

Baldness gate, start as a mate and the whole of the first game will have you bashed by everything with just your paltry spells, by the end of the second you will be stopping time itself. Don't think there is a more epic sprawling tale of nobody to ...

That should read baldurs gate (fecking auto-correct).

Is it Arx Fatalis that makes you have to actually do the gestures for them? I actually quit that damn thing because of that but it sounds like this might be up the OPs ally.

nightcraw1er.488: Baldness gate [...]
The protagonist is a sixty-year old someone, searching for a cure for their falling hair?

I have Baldur's Gate, so I guess that's the next one to play then!

Be prepared to spend a few months playing it, its epic. You can skip the first if you really want, you don't miss a lot of the story and characters are low level even at the end. Me I would play the whole thing BG1, sword cost, BG2, throne of bhaal. If you want further content look for big world setup, it's a small tool that downloads around 30gb of mods for the game, so you can play all the game in the seconds engine with additional content and npc's. It's massive.
If you have done both of those and still want a challenge play solo, either rogue or sorcerer are known to be able to do this. Ice wind dale is same engine, but more combat focused, lacks the epicness.

If that's the way you want to build your character sure.

Oh, thanks for the info, I'll try to remember this mod when I play it!

clicking that link, I expected something like this...
I'll highjack this thread a bit and ask:

What are some good magic systems in games? That is more than just selecting an item in a menu or a gun that shoots beams instead of bullets.

Lichdom made you feel very powerful, but it was pretty much a regular FPS, and the gameplay loop wasn't all that fun.

Magicka was very interesting, but it was balanced with co-op in mind, which makes playing it whenever more of a hassle.

Mages of Mystralia - must recommend this game, it would be up to your ally.
Nine Parchments
you could check Be a mage gogmix.

Two Worlds II with its card based magic system
Magicka I and II with the multitude of combinations
My smart ass reply aside. I was serious about Arx Fatalis. A lot of people love it.

This one I love it! YES!

I can sometimes be a bit of a snob with mages in games though. I might not enjoy them all, but I'll give them a go!

amok: Two Worlds II with its card based magic system

Magicka (I haven't played the second one) is actually really bad game. Controls are awful, graphics are dated, gameplay is clunky at best, I didn't liked the humor and in fact I don't really think humor is good at all.

Nine parchments has smoooth controls, it's twin stick shooter with magic, nice graphics, can be played on low end computers, humor is OK, more like commentary, but better than Magicka 1, magic is nice, gameplay is addicting.
Despite people saying it's Magicka rippoff, it's not. I played both Magicka 1 and Nine Parchments and not every game with magic system is copy of Magicka.

But Mages of Mystralia is veeeery nice. It's my top pick.
