I have decided to announce a new roguelike that I have invented. It does not yet have a title, but here are some of the awesome features of this roguelike:
* All areas are hand-crafted; no random generation!
* Can save/load whenever you want; even if you die, just reload from your last save!
* Exciting real-time combat!
* Smooth motion: No need to stick to a rigid grid!
* Exciting battle scenes! No longer is combat confined to the dungeon you're in; battles take place in a separate battle arena!
* Very simple gameplay! No need to choose between multiple ways to solve problems, as the game will only present you with one obvious way to proceed!
* No long-term resource management; all your resources (including things like consumables) are replenished after each fight! Go all out on every battle! (Of course, the game will be balanced so that doing so doesn't make things too easy.)
* No need to fight! (Or at least, no need to fight all the time.) Sometimes there are other ways to deal with enemies! (Actually, in order to be consitent with an earlier part, every encounter that can be solved peacefully *must* be solved peacefully.)
* No need to worry about getting lost! The game is extremely linear, no need to explore!

So, how does this roguelike sound? Do you think you would play it?

Disclaimer: I am not actually intending to make such a roguelike. This post is intended as satire; I am making fun of the classification of games into genres. (Just compare this roguelike to the Berlin Interpretation definition of "roguelike".)

Edit: Why is this topic "low rated"? It is extremely annoying for those who want to follow the topic.

Serious question - have you tried Tyranny? I just finished it, and it was amazing. Best RPG I've played in years. So good I immediately started it again to try a different path.

More than that, it seems like it's right up your alley with the gender politics. They don't bother me much like they seem to other gamers (couldn't care less about the Baldur's Gate thing or the gay couple in Wasteland 2), but there is definitely a strong and deliberate slant to the game with regards to women, power, strength, and sexuality.

I think you would really dig it.

And yes, I would play that obviously-not-at-all-roguelike. :)

So, would you play the ARPG know as the "Bard's Tale Trilogy"? How about the visual novel known as "Mary Skelter: Nightmares"? (Both games were classified that way by GOG, though at least Mary Skelter's classification seems to have been changed to something more sensible.)
I think you would really like this RPG then: Super PSTW Action RPG
And here is a review of it: Dot Dot Dot

Dear thread,

Being a satire is like being a lady: if you have to tell others that you are, you aren't.

Oh, snap!

(just thought I'd throw a little retro goodness in the mix)

(but honestly, that's a phrase I've never uttered in my life, and I'm not really a fan, but for some reason it popped into my head)

I haven't tried Tyranny, and as the game apparently has real-time-with-pause combat, I don't think I am interested.

I am, however, looking at picking up Tangledeep from the sale, which *is* a roguelike (from what I can tell), and was recommended to me in multiple threads a while back.

(Also, I don't like the phrase "gender politics"; it implies that one's gender is somehow a political statement, and I don't think it is.)

I really don't do real-time combat either, but it's no problem in this game. I pause early and often and it doesn't bother me. It does take a little getting used to as the combat UI wasn't super well thought-out and tries to cram too much information into too little space, but I play by pausing, issuing orders, and then not letting it go for more than a second or two before pausing again. Even with that much interruption, the flow was still fine and combat still fun.

I remember from Baldur's Gate and its sequel (and Icewind Dale) that the combat basically combined the worst parts of turn-based and real-time combat while lacking both the rhythm of turn-based and the fluidity of real-time.
Does anyone know if this one is playable? It's on a good sale right now.

Robinsons Requiem

I'm also tempted by Caves of Qud (not on sale)

Oh wait, that's a "sadtire".

My bad.
maybe there should be an alt-right subboard, so those with such leanings doesn't have to resort to random gamie threads?

I wouldn't call this games RPGs. They are survival games. So far I only played the first part and can recommend it if you like survival and can live with the outdated graphics and controls.
