This is despite the last game, Mankind Divided, not being a self-contained story and a third game having been planned to complete the story and form a trilogy.

Apparently the culprit is a mix of Mankind Divided's underwhelming sales, and focusing Eidos Montreal efforts on the upcoming Marvel games SE recently announced.

I'm disappointed by this news. I haven't played Mankind Divided, didn't put much faith on the port and my rig, but now knowing that the story might never be finished I don't know if I'll ever bother playing it. Then again, maybe they'll close the story quickly with a small graphic novel someday, or the Marvel games will bomb completely and they'll come back to Deus Ex.
That's why developers should avoid cliffhangers/open story threads or planning out trilogies and the like years in advance. The focus should be on building onto what already exists and at the same time create self-contained storylines.
It's a shame. I really liked Human Revolution and would've bought Mankind Divided if not for the pre-order bullshit they attempted with it, their heavily pro-DRM policy and their terrible handling of the Human Revolution Director's Cut (which even now still has outstanding issues that were present but had been fixed already in the original release, as well as many new issues introduced with the DC).

I still would buy it in an instant if they released it here, along with Human Revolution - GOG releases are the only way I'll consider buying a Square Enix game now; same for EA and Ubisoft for similar reasons.

You shouldn't buy it for the greedy crash grab Witcher 2 style ending.

Actually Mankind Divided pulled those two things off as you can enter every single house on the game and get a story and know the characters in the place.

It's just too bad the publisher was such a Moody and overshooted the cashgrabbing and lacked the self-awareness to know this is what got them to make Bravely Default while almost going bankrupt, I guess they need a crash to learn.
Deus Ex Sequel Was Originally Going to Be Made by Obsidian

SE should give the third game to Obsidian...
They need to make a movie with that series but no, what do they make? A Tetris movie!

Hm that would have been really interesting.

@topic: i haven't played Mankind Divided yet (only got a capable graphics card recently) but from what i heard so far its actually a good game at its core, just really crippled by those marketing schemes. shame really.
i really hope the distributors finally learned their lesson and dial back on that preorder crap/split game content. But thats probably wishful thinking :P

So... waiting for Cyberpunk 2077 ;)

*cough*XIII*cough*

And I'm sure it's no coincidence that that was another UbiSoft game that infamously ended on a cliffhanger, in anticipation of a sequel that would never come.
I will go back in time to stop them releasing the first game. Bleugh! :P
Again? They left Deus Ex: The Fall on a "to be continued" screen, too, presumably for a similar reason. What a bunch of clowns.

Don't forget that there are fuckwits making an emoji movie.

And that they canned a Popeye movie.
Maybe if it wasn't infested with drm I might have bought and played it.

Well the 1st Popeye movie is a classic. Not so sure they should tread on that.

I have to echo that. Games of the past often focused on being self-contained and not leaving anything open, because back then nobody knew what would stick and what would fail. Nowadays, there's a constant need for cliffhanger endings to rope people into buying the next game in the series even if they weren't one-hundred percent on board with the prequel. It's a shame really, because if the conclusion fails or just doesn't come out (like in this case), it undermines the entire series no matter the quality of each individual game.
