I know that this sounds weird but hear me out, i want to replace my current adsl cable (rj11) and it's hard to find a store that sells that cable (already with the connectors or just the cable and i'll do the rest) around here, since i have a cat 5 cable around here (broke the connectors a while ago) i was wondering if i could use that instead or would i run into some kind of interference.

Why don't i just order a adsl cable from amazon? Well, for a while that i have been thinking of getting a crimping tool (rj45/11) and some connectors since there's always some kind of problem with cables around here (house/family/friends) and for the long term it would be cheaper just to fix them myself since i know how to do that.

And yes, before you tell me, i know that the cat 5 cable is ticker than the rj11 connector but if i cut the 4 wires and leave the plastic out then it should fit.

It's probably just a matter of linking the correct wires on both ends.
Still, I personally prefer factory made cables.

I don't see why it shouldn't work. Cat 5 cableis usually superior to the normal phone cables so impedance should be lower...

But won't i run into any problem considering that the adsl cable have a much lower frequency than the cat 5 cable?

Sounds like you really want to do it, so do it. :)

I've used telephone wire before for Ethernet connections, taking up 6 of the 8 slots. Worked fine for a long time, although it could be quite temperamental if it wanted to work or not.

Home Depot is your best bet to get those tools, wire and heads in bulk.

Lol, kind of, i don't want to order 50m of rj11 cable from the mainland. :) Bit confused, isn't telephone 2 wires, adsl 4 wires and ethernet 8 wires? As for the tools, bit hard to find those around here and it's probably cheaper to order those from amazon, i could also just order the cable from there (complete or "do it yourself") but like i said i want to "recycle" my cat 5 cable.


Edit: The fun part of all this is that i'm ordering 50 rj11 connectors because it's the only one that sends to Portugal and fulfilled by Amazon. At least its cheap....

Not sure. It could be intended for 2 lines, plus 2 grounds.

RJ11 does have 4 cores, but only 2 would be used for data. rtcvb32 is most likely correct about the other being used for ground.

Now we used to route our phone system through a cat5 patch panels so swapping from RJ11 to RJ45 works.

You can always use cat5/5e/6 cable with rj11 tips. If you're making a patch, you can even pull the two pairs you won't be using out of the sheath, but that can be a hassle. You won't get any sort of interference. I've used cat5 with rj11 and rj14 quite a few times. If you really want to be a nerd, you can double-tip four pair wire like cat5 and have two lines run in one ^_^

Don't worry about the frequency. All ethernet is baseband, which means it goes from zero [url= not technically zero, but low enough by comparison to not be worth quibbling about the varying starting points for different standards][/url]up to a certain freq. You'll have no problems, and the greater copper quality in good cat5 will, if anything, give you better signal. Just make sure you crimp properly.

EDIT: I'll point out that if you're going to buy a crimper, you should get one that does 11, 14, 25, and 45/48. And if your spare wire is STP instead of UTP, be aware of the tips you buy :P

Amazing! That is really a "Cat o' nine tails" :-D Mainland?! I was going to say I had some short spare cables lying around somewhere. But it seems it would not be as easy as I initially thought.

Hell nah, i used to do that and it was a pain in the ass, never again, i'll leave it be. Nice, i was actually going to drive to a place where i haven't checked yet so now i'll wait for the tools to arrive and go with the cat 5. As for your sugestion, a bit overkill no? :p Eh, to be honest i didn't spend too much money on the crimping tool since it's not a everyday work tool for me, just for ocasional stuff, so it only does 11 and 45, what i intended. And yes, even if has passed a long time since i work with those i still remember some of that stuff (wiring the correct pins). :)

No need anyway, i actually prefer the cat 5 since it's more robust than the adsl one, obrigado.

I've noticed half the wires in most cables are grounds. The only exceptions i know of are the 9/25 pin serial cables where i think 1 pin was either dead (like used in VGA cords), are there to make the shape unique, or was a timing line. I don't know all the specifics though.
