Yup, you read that correctly. Cyan has finally gained the ability to remake a game that is not the original Myst. As part of the process, the unofficial Starry Expanse Project has been put on hold, as Cyan will be remaking Riven from the ground up. More details can be found on their website:

Here's your typical teaser trailer, in case you thought this was some odd dream.
FINALLY. I can't tell you how long I've been hoping for this.
Nice though I'd rather they finish off Obduction (fix the broken keyboard bindings introduced in a patch that added VR controls) and Myst (2021) subtitles (latest Patch 8 patch notes "Things To Be Done" section includes "Subtitles for Classic Videos" as a work-in-progress 1 year post launch) first...
It will be great to finally see Riven in full 3D environments. :)

The last Myst Remake looked great, so I have high expectations, but let's hope they go with something like that Unreal 5 character creator and not cartoonish reinterpretation of the originals again.

^ This. I love Cyan, but my God do they have a thing for abandoning almost-finished games in the most annoying way possible. Lack of classic FMV subtitles in Myst 2021 14 months post-release aside, they also have this weird hatred for left-handed gamers when it comes to keyboard bindings, eg, both Myst (2021) and Obduction (2016) had the bi-polar "WASD moves normally but L/R cursor keys turn instead of strafe" (L/R cursor doesn't mirror A/D like U/D cursor does with W/S, like some early 1992 pre-mouselook FPS that fell out of time).

So left-handed K&M players have ended up with 2x controls for turning (one in each hand) but cannot strafe / move sideways in either nor have any in-game key rebinding in both Obduction & Myst 2021, despite being made in Unreal 4 which openly provides simple pre-made menu templates for that, and even broke the ability to edit input.ini Unreal Engine files to DIY your own bindings then flagged 'We can't be bothered to fix it, go play something else...' as the correct 'solution' for not fixing a basic accessibility feature they broke... As a "lefty" K&M player, I'm definitely gonna let others be the beta-testers for this...
Hmm. I have mixed feelings. The cartoon characters in recent Myst were awful. Far worse than passing the original footage through one of those fancy AI-enhanced upscalers used in restoring 130 year old footage. And reading various reviews of Myst 1 Release 5 & Obduction, if a bug doesn't get fixed within a certain time-frame, then it won't get fixed at all once they start work on a new game. Riven was quite a bit bigger / more complex than Myst which is still buggy (and still missing Rime?) I'd rather they take their time and do each game right and complete it properly once than put out a string of half-finished buggy ones... :-/
I loved Riven (Myst 2), but kinda fed up with Cyan's constant Myst remasters\remakes (with some flaws)
Right now I'm playing it (I'm on a hiatus, a rest) so I'll follow this remake announcement. Good news.
Riven is my #1 of first person adventure games. I love Riven.

Please, Cyan, do not remake it. It looks and plays as gorgeous today as it did 25 years ago.

That memory must stay as it is.

Good news, though, for people wanting more "Riven", is that NEYYAH should get a release soon(ish).
Hello everyone!

"Riven the Sequel to Myst" is my number one Point & Click adventure game.
But I have mixed feelings about this announcement...

First, I still prefer the original Myst (Myst Masterpiece Edition to be fair) over the three realtime 3D remakes done by Cyan themselves. Among the three attempts at Myst in realtime 3D-rendering I do tend to favor the first one "realMyst" from 2000. Yes, it did not compare well with the pre-rendered still-shots from the original, but it was (in my opinion) an impressive feat at the time of launch. So much actually, that I asked a friend in Canada to get a copy for me, before he visited Europe again, where I lived back then.
Both later attempts of reimagining Myst in 3D had some interesting aspects, but did not recreate this wonder of discovering Myst in the 90's nor in early 2000. Each of them had multiple things that were somehow off (for me).

And secondly, this official remake of "Riven" means that the tremendous community effort of the "The Starry Expanse" project never sees a release.
Why it bothers me? Because meanwhile Cyan is following the trend of utilizing the most recent and very demanding tech & hardware developments, thus excluding a lot of customers with weaker computer setups from experiencing their new games for themselves.
I would have loved to play "Obduction" by myself, but my computer(s) are miles away from anything to handle the huge requirements!
(Hey, did not Cyan always followed the new industry tech, like those fancy CD-ROM disks in the early 90's? You may ask. Sure. However, they built on technology that was affordable and thus more accessible to a greater audience back then. Both "realMyst" (2000) and the official follow ups in the Myst series ("Uru" & "Myst V End of Ages") showcased impressive use of technology at the time but were compatible with already established and widespread hardware.)
The community project might not have been extremely optimized in the end, but neither are Cyan's recent games!

And finally, I have doubts whether a modern realtime 3D version of "Riven" would match with the (artistic) vision of the original game. Hence, I think it will not have / give the 'same' impression (on me) as the original, when I played it for the first time on the Playstation 1, and later again on the PC.

Am I intrigued by the prospect? I guess, so.
Ultimately, time will tell if Cyan actually stays close to the original (as the community of "The Starry Expanse" intended) or not, and if I have to wait another decade to give it a try...

Kind regards,
foxgog
After the fifth PC version of Myst, it's about bloody time.

I love Myst, but I love Riven even more and it was perplexing that they just kept remaking Myst when:
a) Riven is the better game, and
b) It meant that people had to go from increasingly graphically advanced versions of Myst to a sub-640x480 pre-rendered game from 1997 if they wanted to follow on from the open ending of the original game.

I'd rather they tried to find a way to keep the FMV to be honest.

It has aged fantastically compared to contemporary games, but I still think there are a lot of people who haven't played it and wouldn't play it now. I like that the remake means a whole new bunch of people will get to play it. I haven't bothered with Myst VR yet and I don't know if I'd necessarily bother with this remake though, I'm happy to just ignore them if they screw it up.

It's been on my radar since our beloved "catte" pointed me to it in our 1st person adventures thread ;)
VERY awesome news. As much as I love the original Myst, Riven's environments are too gorgeous to not see a remake.
