Capcom and GOG strike again: this time around to reveal the re-release date of the original Resident Evil™ 2!

Capcom's Resident Evil™ series has defined and revolutionized the survival horror genre, with the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3 being standout titles that have captivated gamers worldwide. Now, it’s time for the second installment of the series to join its predecessor in the grand re-release.

Just like with Resident Evil, we made sure GOG's version of the second entry in the series is the best it can be. You can expect a variety of quality of life improvements, compatibility with modern systems, full modern controllers support, and even more.

That being said, we’re happy to announce that the original Resident Evil 2 is officially re-releasing on August 27th, 8 AM UTC!

Wishlist it now, and get ready for even more horror!

Ancient-Red-Dragon: Is this going to be another lackluster version, like the the RE 1 version on GOG is?

Or will this be a definitive version that is definitely the best version possible anywhere on any platform and in any language, and which will contain no missing content whatsoever?

Can someone who is an expert on these games please answer those questions. Thanks.

RawSteelUT: I don't get this question. These are just ports of the original PC releases to modern hardware, and I don't think there was a release of PS1 Director's Cut for PC.

I fully expect that to be the same for RE2 - just the vanilla RE2: Platinum with support for modern systems.

Remember, this is about having a legitimate way to buy the classic PC games in the modern day. The ISOs for PlayStation are everywhere if that's what you're looking for - this is a whole other animal.
If RE2 didn't get a PC release it got close with the DC release as I know that release was made using Windows CE. The RE3 release on DC might have been the same.
Since when does GoG sells Resident Evil games? Can't say i'm impressed with RE 2 (a game from 1998) getting released on August 27th this year and 3 being stuck in the "coming soon" purgatory. And just where exactly are RE 4 and 5?
I'm not expecting Village here, but they could've at least brought the first 5.

Still, better to see some good old games for a change instead of the usual junk.

Did you miss the constant advertising the had for almost a month? also, while not earth-shattering, these games aren't available anywhere else on PC, so yes there are reasons to be impressed

Cool and good!
So this is the Resident Evil 2 Platinum version? Which was RE2 Dual Shock Version on PS1?
avatar
Syphon72: Last time I used Rebirth, it kept crashing at a certain point.
I never had any problems with it crashing, it ran like butter on my side. Maybe you used an older version of the patch or your game files were corrupt, as the latest versions of the patch are quite stable. I recently tried Dino Crisis 2 and played through it several times from start to finish, without any problems in the latest version of the patch, so far.

Girdeux: An official, legal release for one. 99.999% of people playing the sourcenext games aren't playing it legally and we all know it. If the version GOG got a hold of isn't enough, you're free to close a deal with CAPCOM and Sourcenext yourself.
RE 1 was re-released by MediaKite, and not by SourceNext, the latter re-released RE 2 and 3. I will only buy RE 1 on GOG if they add the content from the PS1 Director's Cut version, and that is not something difficult to do, just GOG getting the source code from Capcom and working on it, it would be a BIG selling point.

Getting straight to the point, if I remember correctly, when it comes to content, the PC version has the same content as the PS1 version. RE 2 on PC is good when it comes to content. Unfortunately, the RE 1 PC version wasn't as lucky, the PS1 Director's Cut version being superior in every way.

Genuine toxic Trolling post.
Complaining for nothing, contradictions in every word and no sense at all about what it means.

It was updated. It would always would crash right before the gun shop. It's not hard to fix if you know what you're the doing.

Ok genius, let me elaborate a bit. Firstly i was surprised they actually got some Resident Evil games here (YES i did miss the announcement), thought that would never happen. Second i'm disappointed that 2 and 3 are still "comming soon" (Ok, Resident Evil 2 is getting released on August 27th, guess there's some progress there) and the fact that there is no Resident Evil 4 and 5 anywhere in sights! Seriously, if the game package included Resident Evil 4 and 5, i would genuinely be impressed!

And lastly I actually mentioned how i prefer to see this old classics for a change, instead of IDK generic indie no.5386 or just your usual low quality shovelware GoGs been dumping here nonstop.

I don't know what contradictions you're talking about. But if you still don't get it after this, hopefully less confusing explanation, i believe your the troll here.

Yes, there was an updated port by MediaKite, I was referring to RE2 and 3 here. The games aren't even out yet, this is ASSUMING the Sourcenext versions won't be available. It's quite possible that it won't and if that's the case, I stand by what I said: feel free to travel to Japan and and talk with Sourcenext and CAPCOM lawyers and close a deal yourself. GOG can't "just release" the Sourcenext 2006 games "just because they exist". You don't "just do it". As far as we know, the contract of the deal involving those versions could very well be dumped in a box God knows where and who knows what it says anymore.

As for the RE1 DC content, are you high? "not something difficult to do". Define "difficult", but in any case, yes, it is difficult. You don't "just" add the Director's Cut content in the game. You can't do it "just because Director's Cut exists". The source code of those games are probably lost and gone by now, and that's assuming there would even be enough financial incentive to set up a team to port the game from PS1 to PC.
What a fantastic surprise was this news and now also this bundle from humblebundle. you get all the collection except the Resident Evil 4 remake for 30 dollars.
Be aware you are getting this game only for Steam and you won't get the classics that are been released here in GOG, but still, what a fantastic notice. Resident Evil 2 Original in a couple of days on GOG and also this cheap bundle.

Damn thanks GOG and Capcom and Humblebundle! You gave me a smile.

I would remove the link as it may be against the rules as it links to another store to purchase something.

I don't WANT RE1 DC as it was censored DESPITE Capcom's claims. Apparently some screw up had them print the WRONG content to the disc pressers and they thought NO ONE would care despite the big part of the DC being that it was going to be the same as the original Japanese Playstation release. Here is hoping the release of RE here was based on the original Japanese version anyway.
