andysheets1975: When I get home tonight I'm going to give my CD copies a hug.

F4LL0UT: I'm gonna jizz on mine. Only they were actually borrowed from a friend more than a decade ago. I think I'm gonna return them right after jizzing on them. He's German, I'm sure he won't mind (the jizz that is, he's gonna kill me for returning them so late, though).
That reminds me, here's your pillow back. :D

Oh, cool, thaaaeeuuurgh... stepped right into that one, didn't I...

ShadowWulfe: I'm quite glad Night Dive got shot down. Their push for Steam exclusivity for everything has put them somewhere near Gearbox in my book.

NOLF probably has a higher chance of being here than Homeworld.
avatar
Zeether: System Shock 2 came out on here first before Steam and that was a Night Dive release.
and since then?.
Night Dive should have just released the game. After reading the whole story it seems that not a single one of the IP's potential owners would actually dare suing them. :P

DrakeFox: For as sad as it is that there's this issue getting NOLF out there and into more people's hands, and compatibility. I kinda find it interesting that no one mentioned Contract J.A.C.K. in this thread. Considering it's running on pretty much the same engine, and as far as I recall the same universe as NOLF. But sadly lacking a lot of the fun gadgets trying to be more serious and mindless shooting like than the previous ones.

Mind I do prefer NOLF. But J.A.C.K. does exist and isn't a terrible game either.
avatar
dudalb: Your are half right. J.A.C.K. does exist, but it is a terrible game,a embarrassment to the NOLF franchise.
I guess I should reinstall it and see for myself. I don't remember it being terrible. A bit of a mindless shooter, yes, but not terrible. But it might also have something to do with me playing the game before realising it was in the NOLF world, so going in I had very little expectation.

But just as Project Snowblind for Deus Ex, I don't remember JACK being that bad. Snowblind was a more interesting game sure...I'll shut up now and decide if I want to pick up Jack again. Just reinstalled Mass Effect 1 determined to actually go through it, getting fed up of the horrible game design decisions in that so maybe I'll ditch it for Jack.

Daliz: I don't even want to know what the second hand copies go for in eBay.
avatar
Grargar: €8/$10 for each?
avatar
Daliz: I thought they would be expensive...
The "new" ones are really expensive, like hundred bucks a piece, those "used" are still relatively expensive, starting from 10bucks and quicly going crazy up, for a shitty used specimen.
The problem is they all have DRM: i believe securom and shit like that.
So that means absolutely no buy from me.

Petrell: Unfortunately it also sounds like ND had plans to fully utilise Steamworks (not explicitly mentioned...
Quoted from the original article:
I asked Kick what his ideal re-release of NOLF might look like. "We had managed to get a hold of the source code for the first game and the second game ... making sure that No One Lives Forever 1 & 2 ... had a full complement of Steam features, achievements ...
Pretty explicit to me.

mobutu: Pretty explicit to me.
O, reading skill, why thy fail me so! ;-p

P.S. It should be 'why dost thou fail me so'. ;)
I think this saga will give some new perspective for those people complaining about the speed which GOG releases older games. After years of mergers and whatnot the right holders can be difficult to find. And even if you have an inkling WHO it might be, getting them to actually play ball can be difficult as well.
It's unfortunate. I didn't get to play NOLF back in the day, and I'm out of pirating (plus no way I'll be buying a physical copy online), so I guess I won't be playing it at all.

Oh well, since I haven't played it and I don't know what I'm missing, I'll be fine.

Don't be silly. There's nothing a lawyer wouldn't dare. :)

I have my own personal doubts that this will make a huge difference in people's minds :)

Just speaking from experience and all :)

Petrell: They mention having source code for both so ND could go lot further than GOG's compatibility fixes. Unfortunately it also sounds like ND had plans to fully utilise Steamworks (not explitely mentioned but it's obvious from feature set mentioned) so games would probably become Steam exlusive. :-/
The latter is not a logical consequence of the first. Of course they would release the game on Steam, too, and if they did, why shouldn't they add achievements to that version? Doesn't automatically mean they were planning to make it an exclusive.

Stop slacking and prepare the release of System Shock and Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain already! Can't be all that hard, can it? After all, you still have a whole day left until Release Tuesday! ;)
