Daliz: Aww crap. :(

I played a bit of the sequel back in the day and it was a good game. It was a pirate copy though, never got around to buying it even though it was my intention. I don't even want to know what the second hand copies go for in eBay..

Grargar: €8 for each?

opticq: Sheesh, I was just thinking about buying it. No thanks

Grargar: They are just disc checks. SecuROM wasn't always that infamous.
Oh. I thought they would be expensive and didn't even care to look :D

If it sold well then there's plenty of them in circulation..

It did receive a sequel and re-releases, so it's not a surprise that used copies aren't too expensive... yet.

JMich: This transpired in December of 2014. WB must have been in negotiations with GOG at that point, and probably have already finalized the contracts. Could it be that GOG has offered to do the compatibility work themselves, thus WB didn't see any point in working with Night Dive, because they are already working with GOG? If they were publishers with Night Dive Studios as developers, they would be giving a piece of the pie to Night Dive, if they licensed NOLF to Night Dive, they would be getting a smaller cut. If GOG does the work though, WB's cut would be the standard 70%.

Unlikely, but there may be hope yet.
They mention having source code for both so ND could go lot further than GOG's compatibility fixes. Unfortunately it also sounds like ND had plans to fully utilise Steamworks (not explitely mentioned but it's obvious from feature set mentioned) so games would probably become Steam exlusive. :-/
For as sad as it is that there's this issue getting NOLF out there and into more people's hands, and compatibility. I kinda find it interesting that no one mentioned Contract J.A.C.K. in this thread. Considering it's running on pretty much the same engine, and as far as I recall the same universe as NOLF. But sadly lacking a lot of the fun gadgets trying to be more serious and mindless shooting like than the previous ones.

Mind I do prefer NOLF. But J.A.C.K. does exist and isn't a terrible game either.

I'm quite glad Night Dive got shot down. Their push for Steam exclusivity for everything has put them somewhere near Gearbox in my book.

NOLF probably has a higher chance of being here than Homeworld.

VanishedOne: I'd like to hope for a GOG+WB deal over NOLF, but 'they're not looking to [...] publish the game themselves at this time' would be a... disingenuous thing for WB to tell ND if they are, in fact, planning to publish the game at any later time.
Thus why I also quoted the previous part, about what ND meant by WB publishing the game themselves. It is possible that the 2 options WB denied were the two options presented by ND, neither of which had WB working with GOG.

The trademark claim does complicate things quite a bit though.

If the trademark was filed last year and Night Dive said that they would allow it to expire, how long would it take for it to expire?
Hmmmm... 6 years?

System Shock 2 came out on here first before Steam and that was a Night Dive release. What is the point you're trying to make?

Steam is Da Devil and anyone who dares to release something on it should be shot at in point blank range.

Gilozard: What DRM do the disc versions use? StarForce, SecuROM, something else?
avatar
Grargar: Safedisc and SecuROM v2, respectively.
Forget ordering a disc then. Oh well, the games look fun. If they get to GOG I'll probably buy them.
Good that me and my toy penguin didn't throw away NOLF, I always knew that game was a keeper!

Your are half right. J.A.C.K. does exist, but it is a terrible game,a embarrassment to the NOLF franchise.
I was disappointed that Night Dive said it wasn't interested in including Contract JACK. Yeah, it was a desperate attempt to make the franchise more appealing to the dudebros and was subsequently rejected by the original audience and the attempted audience, but it still would have been nice to have it included for the sake of completeness.
I didn't actually dislike Contract JACK. I viewed it as an unrelated spinoff, and don't actually mind different genres (I don't consider NOLF and JACK to be in the same style) in the same universe.

andysheets1975: When I get home tonight I'm going to give my CD copies a hug.
I'm gonna jizz on mine. Only they were actually borrowed from a friend more than a decade ago. I think I'm gonna return them right after jizzing on them. He's German, I'm sure he won't mind (the jizz that is, he's gonna kill me for returning them so late, though).
