Except not really. Rep is pretty regularly abused via some sort of script. If somebody wants to waste that much time and energy, they can use the script on you and remove up to 6 of your rep points daily and downvote random posts of yours. If you don't have the script, you can do it with alt accounts, as happened pretty prolifically in the #GamerGate thread where a user actually admitted to pulling in a bunch of alts to downvote political opinions he didn't like. I and several other users have had the script thing done to us. Heck, I run the largest giveaway on the website and I was in the negative hundreds WHILE doing it and getting praised by the community thanks to a scammer who had a vendetta against me after I stopped one of his scams and put me on the script.

Yes, it's possible you were downvoted by the community (this often happens to trolls or posts that look like trollposts, which may even be spam-deleted), but the system is so broken that it's completely unreliable. It's best to just ignore the number and ratings altogether and judge each person on an individual basis for yourself.

Are you seriously asking for strategic tips to race to negative infinity?

Hmm, come to think of it, it would probably be a lot quicker to cause an integer overflow at the negative end… Should we all help make it happen? Whoever gets their negative reputation overflowed will have the highest positive reputation when it wraps.

Though, there might be a daily limit, so I don't know how quick that would really be.
