Meat is sold by the pound. Hot dogs usually weigh just enough that it takes 10 of them to come out to around a pound. The buns come in 8 because of no other real reason than tradition. The machines that produce them make them 8 at a time, and it would be costly to change them just to package them 10 at a time, especially with such a lack of demand.

It was a secret backroom deal between the hotdog consortium and the hotdog buns syndicate to increase the number of purchases by forcing consumers to buy at least 4 hotdog packs and 5 bags of buns each time.

Given how much actual meat is in the average hot dog though, there should be about 30 of them in there if that was the reason.

I was probably thinking of "primitive", though looking for a more colourful word. I did not manage to find a more colourful -yet suitable- word due to not being all too used to using insults, hence my language failed miserably.

You joke, I worked with someone who told me they were put there by the Victorians. What really got to me is she kept telling me how stupid I was to believe in something as silly and improbable as the fossil record, as opposed to something as silly and improbably as a bunch of people going around burying billions of bogus fossils. :P
