Arcade-like action-jRPG platformer with Metroidvania elements.

Ys I & II Chronicles+, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, and Ys Origin: a series of action-focused jRPGs, is available now for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 25% launch discount!

Ys I & II Chronicles+ is an enhanced release of the two that started it all. These classics feature a unique buttonless "bump" combat system, designed to mitigate the pace-breaking repetition of a standard jRPG grind. Combat is carried out by simply bumping your enemies, where the speed and direction of your attacks determine their effectiveness for a satisfying way to resolve conflicts and level up.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana is a reimagining of Ys III: Wanderers from Ys. It brings the threequel into a 3D world with new combat mechanics, all focused on the spirit of non-stop action rather than item and skill management. Thanks to the self-contained story, you can feel safe starting your adventure right here.

Ys Origin is the most recent entry into the series, a prequel set 700 years before the events in Ys I & II Chronicles+. This is the title that perfects the many facets of the Ys formula, combining the best gameplay elements for what the developer's themselves call an "arcade-like RPG platformer with Metroidvania elements".

rtcvb32: Seeing as Origin is a prequel, this gives us the first 4 games, while 5-7 & Memories aren't yet here. But the other half of the games in 3-6 months makes for heavy anticipation :) I'm sure 4 games will keep you busy for a quite a while... Now i'm tempted to pull out Origins that i happened to get at HB a while back...
Ys IV, V & VII were not released for Windows yet. ;)

edit: Ok, Ys VII was released for Windows, but only in Chinese.

From this list (made some edits) we're only going to get Ys VI. A couple of weeks ago XSEED hinted at a bunch of games they'd release this year and Ys VI was one of them.

Ys V is SFC/SNES only, so that's off-limits. Falcom will likely remake it after Ys 8 though.
Ys Seven is only on PSP for us Western folks. There's a Chinese PC port, but XSEED hasn't shown willingness to pursue it.
Memories of Celceta is a remake of Ys IV (MotS is on SNES and Dawn is on PC Engine CD), but it's only on Vita right now. There's a Chinese PC port in development, but like Ys Seven, we probably won't get it.

Grrr, damn you and your logic and facts... :P

SNES games... now i'm tempted to search one of my favorite sites for YS and see what comes up for what systems...
Seems like I gotta get my jRPG on now. It's so great to see GOG expanding. In this past month alone we've got at least 10+ new games and one re-release. I guess publisher's are finally jumping aboard the DRM-Free boat.

According to Wikipedia and Mobygames, there is a Chinese version of YS VII for Windows.

OK, it's official, GOG has decided to kill my wallet. Or at least mug it in some dark alley....
I think I just heard my wallet scream from it's drawer.

Just looked on Steam and the games normal price is about a dollar cheaper here on GOG.

Man, just when a person thinks it doesn't have anymore games to play you come out with this?! I already played this games... yet I want to play them again for some reason (maybe because they're awesome!!) =D

Best release.
Found this might be useful for some of us if your wallet is tight for only one of them

"That all depends on what you're most looking for in the experience.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana has one single protagonist, but takes place in an overworld complete with a town, a castle and all the other classic RPG trappings (a dark mine, an icy mountain, a fiery crater, ancient ruins, etc.). Its world has a bit of a Metroidvania design to it as well, meaning you'll often learn new abilities or gain new items which will allow you to return to previous areas and access new sections you may have missed previously.

Felghana is also EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, and is generally considered by fans to be the hardest game in the entire series. You will most likely die a lot and should definitely expect mastering the controls and techniques to be a necessity -- but since bosses do allow you to retry them endlessly upon dying, the experience rarely gets frustrating. Plus, there are 6 different difficulty levels (with Normal in the middle), ensuring that you can find the exact challenge level you want.

Ys Origin, then, has gameplay that's functionally very similar to Felghana's, but its structure is a different beast entirely. There's no overworld this time, no towns, no castle -- the whole game takes place inside an enormous tower. Fortunately, the tower does have "tiers" that grant it quite a bit of variety -- there's a water tier, a fire tier, a desert tier, etc. -- but there's far less emphasis on exploration than in Felghana, with a greater emphasis instead placed on combat and platforming challenges. I liken it a bit to a classic level-based Castlevania game, where each stage is a linear path from beginning to end, peppered with story scenes in between.

Ys Origin also gives you your choice of two protagonists with wildly different play styles and storylines, as well as an unlockable third protagonist for subsequent playthroughs. And... well, this is purely subjective on my part, but I honestly feel it has one of, if not THE best storyline in the entirety of the Ys series, as well as the best bosses.

So in short, if you're into the RPG experience and favor exploration and creative level design over all else, or if you really want a good challenge, go with Felghana.

If you're into the arcade-like action experience and favor combat and story over all else, or really want to try out different play-styles, go with Origin.

Note that story-wise, the two games are wholly unrelated, so you can play them in either order with absolutely no risk of spoilers, nor with any prior knowledge of the series mythos required.

Great news!! :D
Not gotten playing any of these yet, but fully plan to. So thanks GOG for these nice releases!
Great games. Coincidentally, I finished Oath yesterday.

Oath and Origin are great with 3D Vision 2. Flat sprites in a deep 3D world is beautiful to see. And the soundtrack is awesome.

I still didn't play 1 and 2 (only 10 minutes of the 1st one, and I died, lol).

Man, if these games were here one year ago I'd have bought them here instead of on Steam :( . More bonus goodies, like the OSTs in FLAC quality would probably make me buy them again at some sale.
Wallet's safe. Good to see more and more games coming to GOG though.
Oh man, these were significantly cheaper on steam when I picked them up over there. I specifically have not even downloaded them, having read they were "unofficially confirmed" for release on GOG. Now after so long they are here, but those prices are far too high for a re-purchase. I'll have to wait for a 75% off, at least.

...even more waiting to play these. *sigh
