Arcade-like action-jRPG platformer with Metroidvania elements.

Ys I & II Chronicles+, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, and Ys Origin: a series of action-focused jRPGs, is available now for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 25% launch discount!

Ys I & II Chronicles+ is an enhanced release of the two that started it all. These classics feature a unique buttonless "bump" combat system, designed to mitigate the pace-breaking repetition of a standard jRPG grind. Combat is carried out by simply bumping your enemies, where the speed and direction of your attacks determine their effectiveness for a satisfying way to resolve conflicts and level up.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana is a reimagining of Ys III: Wanderers from Ys. It brings the threequel into a 3D world with new combat mechanics, all focused on the spirit of non-stop action rather than item and skill management. Thanks to the self-contained story, you can feel safe starting your adventure right here.

Ys Origin is the most recent entry into the series, a prequel set 700 years before the events in Ys I & II Chronicles+. This is the title that perfects the many facets of the Ys formula, combining the best gameplay elements for what the developer's themselves call an "arcade-like RPG platformer with Metroidvania elements".

If you're looking for jRPG charm with action-RPG gameplay Ys I & II Chronicles+, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, and Ys Origin are here to please, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 25% launch discount will last for one week, until Thursday, February 26th, at 10:59 AM GMT.

jackster79: One last question: is this mechanic in all of the Ys games, or just the early ones?
The bumping is unique to YS I+II. Oath in Felghana and Origin feature more typical sword combat.

Yup. Ys II has fireballs too. So Ys I is the only one with just the bump system. IIRC

bansama: Nope. Nihon Falcom specifically stated their reason is that the inclusion of Japanese language, or even access to Japanese language only builds (which Steam can handled on the fly based on Steam client//game dropdown language options), would not generate sales.

Thank you for letting me know. I didn't read the tweet and I couldn't read it anyway even if I was aware :)
That said, it's unfortunate that Falcom think that way. I know a lot of people that wish to have the original language the game is made always present, regardless the original language used. Falcom was mainly a pc game developer, one of the few that produced that kind of game. They moved to console to increase the sales but if they opened to the western market and maybe digital distribution, they could have stayed a pc developer and even make more money.

Well, the good thing is that we've got several Falcom games on digital platforms now and Falcom still gets paid for each copy that's sold, so if their games continue to do well on Steam/Gog, it's more likely they'll keep PC gamers in mind in the future.

Tekkaman-James: Ys: Memories of Celceta is the remake/re-imagining of Ys IV: Mask of the Sun released in 2012/2013 on the PS Vita. This game was ported to the PC in 2014, but has only been released in China.

tootbrush: The Chinese PC port isn't out yet.

Tekkaman-James: Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim was originally released on PC in Japan back in 2003. The PS2 and PSP ports did see release outside of Japan in 2005/2006, but never the PC version. Considering how much was added to the PS2 version, releasing the PC original would probably be lackluster by today's standards. Short of porting the PS2 version back to PC, there's not much chance of seeing this here.

tootbrush: Nonsense. Konami added nothing of value to the game. I mean, some godawful CG cutscenes, Falcom's awesome sprites replaced with 3D models, below average VA, a new badly designed side quest and worse graphics and framerate? No, thank you.

Also, it probably won't happen until the 2nd half of the year (because of TitS SC and Corpse Party), but it is coming here. XSEED teased the game's release last month.
You happen to have a link to where they teased that?

Initial teaser on XSEED's Facebook.
Solution thread on GAF.

It was 2006 and they had success in Japan, on PSP, while the handheld market was booming. In 2007 Steam had just 13 million active accounts: http://store.steampowered.com/news/1050/
Excellent games and glad to see them here but I do have them already. Might buy again later when there is a bigger discount.

If XSeed is releasing Ark of Napishtim on PC hopefully GOG can get it day one and I'll definitely buy here.

Maybe Ys Seven and Ys: Memories of Celceta are a few of the other titles.

I've only played I & II, and Ark of Napishtim on PS2, but both used the bump system. Easy enough to find out, just look for a video of the combat on the other games! :D

I don't know on ps2 but on pc the bump system was only on the first two Ys game that were a remake of the originals with better graphic but same mechanics. Ys VI has a combat system similar, but less refined, to Felghana and Origin (that are based on the code of Ys VI).

I didn't expected them to port 'Celceta' ever, if it's true though then maybe over time we could actually see all of the modern Falcom releases on GOG and Steam.

In meanwhile two remaining The Legend of Heroes VI games (I didn't play anything from this series) will be released this year, also apparently Xseed is already working on Chinese PC port of Zero no Kiseki (LoH VII), which actually will be translated from Chinese.

Two original Ys IV games also use this system.

How good is Ys 1&2 ? on the fence thinking on getting this :/
Have no experience at all with JRPGs (although I bought Septerra Core, haven't played it yet though), but I've heard people praising these games, so off to my wishlist they went.

My question is, how much story is there in them? Or is it all action and gameplay?

JRPGs tend to be story-heavy. I recommend starting with Trails in the Sky, as that is much more modern and better made than Septerra Core. In any case, the Ys games are lighter fare than genuine JRPGs when it comes to their storytelling - but make up for it by having fun combat.
