Arcade-like action-jRPG platformer with Metroidvania elements.

Ys I & II Chronicles+, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, and Ys Origin: a series of action-focused jRPGs, is available now for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 25% launch discount!

Ys I & II Chronicles+ is an enhanced release of the two that started it all. These classics feature a unique buttonless "bump" combat system, designed to mitigate the pace-breaking repetition of a standard jRPG grind. Combat is carried out by simply bumping your enemies, where the speed and direction of your attacks determine their effectiveness for a satisfying way to resolve conflicts and level up.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana is a reimagining of Ys III: Wanderers from Ys. It brings the threequel into a 3D world with new combat mechanics, all focused on the spirit of non-stop action rather than item and skill management. Thanks to the self-contained story, you can feel safe starting your adventure right here.

Ys Origin is the most recent entry into the series, a prequel set 700 years before the events in Ys I & II Chronicles+. This is the title that perfects the many facets of the Ys formula, combining the best gameplay elements for what the developer's themselves call an "arcade-like RPG platformer with Metroidvania elements".

If you're looking for jRPG charm with action-RPG gameplay Ys I & II Chronicles+, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, and Ys Origin are here to please, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 25% launch discount will last for one week, until Thursday, February 26th, at 10:59 AM GMT.

TWITCH STREAM SPECIAL

Another case of replacing my copies from <Another Service>. Well done. Keep this up and I won't have to use <Another Service> at all.

Ha, you said it before I could :)

I can't afford anything right now but I will get these eventually and that will include Origin, which I already got elsewhere.
Do these include soundtracks? I would like to have the music on my MP3 player.

YS Origin does, but not as extra. You can find it in the release/music subfolder of the game's directory as .ogg files.
The same is true for Chronicles. Not sure about Felghana, but I'm betting it's the same there too. All you need is an application that can play ogg-files.
Ys Origin and The Oath in Felghana are among my favorite games of all time. Glad to see them available on DRM-free form to everyone! :)
Great news! I wonder if GOG's putting up a banner for these releases once the Paradox reveal's taken down. Don't be dismayed by the lack of extras, guys, y'all can find the soundtracks within the games' folders (and even replace them with your own .ogg files!). Best part here is we have two more Falcom games DRM-free, a progressive move for a Japanese PC company this old and conservative.

Edit: Pardon my ignorance, the Ys banner wasn't showing up well on tablet.

jackster79: So what happens? You approach, combat ensues automatically, and then what? You hope your PC AI has enough sense to know when to retreat or make "smart" decisions based on survivability?

Or you just hope he/she/it emerges victorious and that no other enemies approach before you have had a chance to heal?

I guess what I am asking is: Does the player control more than just where the Ys character goes and who he/she speaks to?
You can see all enemies on the map. Sometimes they're so fast that you can't avoid them, so be careful going into new areas, and save often!

Combat is based on the "bump system". Here's how it works:

You have complete control of your character. You simply run up to an enemy and touch it to attack. You and/or they will kind of bounce away (hence the "bump") and one or both of you will take damage. You can continue to attack, or you can retreat if they're too powerful. That's it in a nutshell, at least for Book I (the first half of Ys Chronicles.) Book II adds some magic into the mix.

To be at your most efficient when attacking, hit the enemies diagonally.

If anyone has problems, questions, or just wants game-playing tips on Ys Chronicles, feel free to PM me! I've played them through so many times that I should be able to help you with anything you need.
Most excellent releases! Great to finally have these here, thank you XSEED and GOG! The sad thing is, I currently have no spare gaming funds, so wishlisted for now, but you will be mine soon! :)

Replace music from an Ys game with something else? Heresy! Sacrilege! Blasphemy!
Now you just have to get Ys: The Ark of Napishtim, that's the game (demo of it actually) that introduced me to the series!

Well I must admit, music from Sorcerian (also by Falcom) enhances any game I've played, same goes for arranged Ys tracks.

Ark of Napishtim getting a simultaneous release here and on Steam would bring in the big dough for XSEED.
One word sums it all: YeS! :D
I hope the rights-owners of Hydlide can be pressed to release the Windows compilation for that series on GOG someday. Ys is the better series of games, but Hydlide 1+2+3 for a sub-$10 price would be cool.
For anyone curious about the remaining games in this series that are "missing" from GOG, here is a short rundown:

Ys: Memories of Celceta is the remake/re-imagining of Ys IV: Mask of the Sun released in 2012/2013 on the PS Vita. This game was ported to the PC in 2014, but has only been released in China. XSEED would probably have a lot of work on their hands if they attempted to release this to English-speaking regions.

Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand was released on the Super Famicom in 1995. It did get a remake in 2006 for the PS2 in Japan, but there has been no PC port of any kind. Chances of seeing an English version of this game will probably be limited to fan-translated ROMs.

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim was originally released on PC in Japan back in 2003. The PS2 and PSP ports did see release outside of Japan in 2005/2006, but never the PC version. Considering how much was added to the PS2 version, releasing the PC original would probably be lackluster by today's standards. Short of porting the PS2 version back to PC, there's not much chance of seeing this here.

Ys Seven was first released on the PSP back in 2009/2010. While it did get a PC port in 2012, much like the PC port of Memories of Celceta, it was only released in China. Therefore, as I stated above, XSEED would have a lot of work ahead of them to bring this overseas.

Regardless, don't let that stop you from picking up the three (four, really) games that have now graced the halls of GOGhalla. Much love and many thanks to XSEED and to GOG for bringing these games to us. Let's keep those Japanese game releases coming!
