Do whatever you want... in space.

X Gold, X2: The Threat, X3: Reunion & X3: Terran War Pack, a series of sandbox space-simulators, are available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. Look out for the games at up to 75% off in the Classic X Pack during the Big Fall Promo, or grab the games individually at 50% off.

The X games - X Gold, X2: The Thread, X3: Reunion & X3: Terran War Pack - are a series of some of the most ambitious and sophisticated space-roaming simulators ever created. This is no exaggeration.

The universe is a vast, ruthless place, a true final frontier, where the strong and cunning prosper while the weak are eaten up alive without mercy. But do you have the guile and determination to make it?
The X Series are true sandboxes - you are in charge of your destiny from the second you leave the hangar for the first time, until the moment you deem yourself satisfied with your galactic conquest.

Even though the complexity may be overwhelming to newcomers, the rewards are incredible: in the X Series you can do whatever you want. Become a roaming mercenary - go from nimble fighters to hulking destroyers, join one of the many factions in war, build and maintain a massive trading empire from rags to riches, even own your own trading posts and facilities. The possibilities are incredible.

You can now grab the entire series at up to 75% off in the Classic X Pack during the Big Fall Promo!

Trade, Fight, Build, Think in X Gold, X2: The Threat, X3: Reunion & X3: Terran War Pack, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com

Gonadius: I played them in order as they were released, and didn't have any problems, but if you jump straight into the X3 games, it will be steep. Very steep. I'd suggest at least giving X2 a whirl first to get the basics down.

EndlessWaves: The series is generally split into three parts:
X Beyond the Frontier and X-tension
X2 The Threat and X3 Reunion
X3 Terran Conflict and X3 Albion Prelude
Do any of the games have a Skirmish mode by any chance? Or any randomization?
Ah yes, keyboard and mouse are must haves, a joystick is optional but I do not know about the games before X2:The Threat.
Superb..........and brought :D

May not help or it may, but i don't play any of the X-Series on a joystick.
Did once upon a time....no more.
Just keyboard and mouse, it's fine like that, yeah it's not as quick blah blah...good enough for me.

Skirmish mode... Well, not directly. But you can fly into a Xenon sector if you want oO

Randomization? Kind of... The universe develops over time. Some stations will be destroyed and others will be built depending on the sector's needs.
Also, is there an overarching story, or is it purely sandbox?

There is an overarching story. But... It's not THAT good.

It doesn't even have to be good, as long as it's not empty filler that amounts to a glorified "conquer the map 1v1 4x4" then it can keep my attention.
Start playing X3:TC with the help of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p73C60btBi8&list=PL2BC4835802365FF1

You'll be mastering the series in no time! (well, I've been playing for almost 60hr now :P)

When you get the chance to have a multitude of ships at your disposal for various mission types, you'll want to play it non-stop!

That's 'cause these games can be very "tedious" if you don't like some aspects of them (managing EVE like menues, managing your commerce/stations/henchmen/etc...).

They start very slow, have a steep learning curve (not difficult, but loads of stuff to learn), and are not "pure" flight simulators.

So they are not for everyone, if you are looking for a quick way into a space sim, X is not for you, but might fool you to think it is, from here (I guess) most of the negative reviewes.

The whole package for the whole package? It's a steal tbh, hundreds and hundreds of hours to spend into these games.
*raises two very merry beers*

Big thanks to one and all for the response, advice & opinion, another orgasmic DRM-free event of the year :)

And thank you GOG.com for a day one 75% sale <3
Should have added X Superbox bundle, which includes soundtrack and X Universe Encyclopedia.
Apart from that, great release, GOG! :)

How are they, compared to Privateer?
I liked that game, even if I'd prefer way more story and quests.
Which are the best X titles, then?

Which are the best X titles, then?
For me, X3:TC and X3:AP for sure!
