War just came back home.

World in Conflict, a beautiful love-letter to tactics and explosions, is available now on Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com

A hail of artillery pierces tanks and grocery stores, as homes, terrified men, and boys burn under sheets of napalm. Retreat? Never. These are your homes - and you've said your goodbyes fifteen seconds ago. A stunning flash engulfs the now radioactive pit formerly known as Jamestown High and for a few seconds there is silence. But the battle rages on, a dozen blocks down, and your attention is needed elsewhere.

World in Conflict is one of a kind, really. It's an RTS that succeeded in becoming both action-oriented and incredibly tactical, easily accessible but challenging, and a beautiful spectacle of war. It wasn't the first to do many of the things that make it brilliant, but the combination of small-scale tactics on huge battlefields, and the sheer destructive force at your fingertips is unlike any other. You're put in control of a small squad of infantry, tanks, air support or artillery - just one part of a larger clash. Dynamic single-player missions will take you through the various roles and locations in every battle, keeping you constantly at peak intensity as you defend the United States from an onslaught of enemy forces - and then execute a counter-attack in the Soviet Assault expansion.

Commander - three minutes until the second nuke is primed.

The bonds of war and terrifying firepower at your fingertips, World in Conflict is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com
I always wanted to play this back then - thank you GOG!
Looking at the reviews on Steam, apparently this game has not been playing nice for quite a while now on "modern" operating systems, like anything other than XP or Vista. Love that GOG magic. Perhaps someone should head over to the Steam forums and let them know where they can get a working copy of the game. ;)

ne_zavarj: Is it better than Act of War: Gold Edition ?
It's in the same vein. But I find WiC somehow more immersive. And back then the visuals were far more stunning than the already fantastically looking Act of War.

vicklemos: World in Conflict day is much like the first Jurassic Park: yep, it's 8 years old. Yes, it's "dated". But... but damn that's stunning, even to this day!
Jurassic Park is 22 years old. Mind-boggling really, you often see worse CGI even today.

JKHSawyer: I had trouble getting this to run on Windows 7 and 8 with Steam, and now I'm on 10. So I take it this should work flawlessly here?
No problems whatsoever on Windows 10 machines we have. I completed it on Win10 as well.

Russonc: interesting looking... don't remember hearing about it, will have to do some digging or wait for others to chime in with a thumbs up or down!

The-Business: It got high ratings and is a good realtime strategy game. The developers struggled with money and had to split the release in the US and the Russian campaign. The latter one is shorter (iirc 7 missions). Unfortunately, no sequel has been produced.

Also be aware:
"MULTIPLAYER NOTICE: Online servers will be shut down on the 6th of October 2015. After that day multiplayer will be possible only through LAN."

EDIT: There is also a demo.
Thanks for the info and the demo link... I will try it out later .. (also thanks to the others that mentioned the demo links)
This is an excellent game with top quality graphics. Unfortunately I already have a DRM-free copy. After the developers joined Ubisoft they packaged the Soviet Assault campaign in a complete edition without any DRM. But I guess I'll get it here eventually.

Most people used to say that the single player was just training for multiplayer and I'm glad I ignored them. This is one of the few rts's that I couldn't stop playing until I finished it. The single player campaign is well designed with a good story.

The release description makes it sound like that you play the main campaign first and then counter attack in the Soviet Assault expansion. That's not the way it happens. The Soviet Assault is fully integrated into the main campaign as one continuous story with flashbacks. In fact when both campaigns are installed you start the game playing as the Soviets. And you go back and forth every few missions playing both sides during the game. I hope GOG doesn't package these as two separate installations like the great (stupid) unbundling. That would ruin the experience.

If only GOG could get their hands on Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines...

We don't unbundle games unless we absolutely have to. In any case, WIC: Complete comes in an all-in-one installer :)

DEAR UBISOFT,

Please consider making your games DRM-Free sooner. I bought Anno 1404 the moment you released the patch that removed the freaking TAGES. I bought Assasin's Creed the moment i saw it being DRM-Free. I will buy World in Conflict now, as I wanted to play this great game for years but I refrained from buying it due to the DRM it had. There are many more games I would like to buy from you, provided that you'll release them DRM-Free. I hope someone read that.

Greetings,
A customer of yours.

Phew! Close one. I swear to god I saw today's releaseS :)
Well, Ubisoft will shut down the MP server in the beginning of october.

This release (only the 2 manuals, only english as language) leaves a litte taste in my mouth.
I guess they only want to grab money with it since there is no further support necessary (after server shutdown).

The game is great, make no mistake, but Ubisoft abandoned this opportunity long ago and never will invest here again. It's a shame...
