War just came back home.

World in Conflict, a beautiful love-letter to tactics and explosions, is available now on Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com

A hail of artillery pierces tanks and grocery stores, as homes, terrified men, and boys burn under sheets of napalm. Retreat? Never. These are your homes - and you've said your goodbyes fifteen seconds ago. A stunning flash engulfs the now radioactive pit formerly known as Jamestown High and for a few seconds there is silence. But the battle rages on, a dozen blocks down, and your attention is needed elsewhere.

World in Conflict is one of a kind, really. It's an RTS that succeeded in becoming both action-oriented and incredibly tactical, easily accessible but challenging, and a beautiful spectacle of war. It wasn't the first to do many of the things that make it brilliant, but the combination of small-scale tactics on huge battlefields, and the sheer destructive force at your fingertips is unlike any other. You're put in control of a small squad of infantry, tanks, air support or artillery - just one part of a larger clash. Dynamic single-player missions will take you through the various roles and locations in every battle, keeping you constantly at peak intensity as you defend the United States from an onslaught of enemy forces - and then execute a counter-attack in the Soviet Assault expansion.

Commander - three minutes until the second nuke is primed.

The bonds of war and terrifying firepower at your fingertips, World in Conflict is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com
Looks like a fine RTS, wishlisted for now.

lostwolfe: so, no armello today, i guess? :(
No, sorry. It seems there is a delay with this release. I do not have any more information. Maybe one of the guys that know what is going on with it will update you.

joppo: I can only imagine it must be a very tough job, especially when you have to take work home.

"Honey, welcome home. We're visiting my mom tonight, ok?"
"Sorry, hun. I had to bring work to finish tonight and will be invading the soviets instead"
Nope, we are not taking our work back home :) I can occasionally visit the forums, like I do now, but nothing more really. So no excuses for playing during leasure time :)

Found this game including expansion in the bargain bin at Zellers sometime around 2008 or so for $1.99 so I grabbed it as it looked cool, but I've never actually installed it yet. Mind you I've got probably 2 dozen or more games bought back then that have never been installed also. :)

I'm still interested in loading up the DVD one of these days. Not sure I'll buy it again here or not unless I enjoy the DVD version good enough to want to do LAN multiplayer locally and need another copy, but it's good to know it is here if and when I need it and I'm very happy to see yet another Ubisoft title freed up from DRM. I may say "what the heck..." and buy it discounted in the future as a means of expressing my vote for bringing titles here DRM-free anyway.

I sure hope to see Ubisoft continue to release more and more games here in the future, even if it is pulling from their oldest pool of games onward. Hopefully the gap closes as time moves on though, and it'll be an amazing day if we ever see a day-1 release from Ubisoft here. They'd regain some lost respect for that for sure.

Crosmando: Can I play as the Soviets? I ain't interested if I can't crush the capitalist pigs
No one is crushing anyone. But you will see. You will learn what war means in a game that takes it seriously.

This mostly unknown RTS has THE BEST STORY in an RTS game. IF you look something in the vein of RA, this ain't for you. But if you want something that will make you think every step, due to the limited resources, this game will provide.

Massive did a great job on their last game, just like they did before that in Ground Control series. It's a game that might play with your emotions, making you actually give a damn about a story and you don't see that in a strategy game. You will have moments where you might want to smash the monitor and beat up the writer for playing you, for making you care. You get a soundtrack that works all too well for the game. THIS is by far my favorite RTS. And now Massive was swallowed by Ubi and put to work on stuff that is way below what they were capable to do.:(

@ne_zavarj - definitely better than Act of War.

You know you aren't required to stop enjoying your hobby during off hours just because you made your job out of it as well :)

IronArcturus: R.U.S.E. is another game GOG really needs to get!

vicklemos: Agreed!!!
Wut? 55 votes ONLY?! :(
Yeah, I've been waiting to play a DRM-free version of R.U.S.E. forever!
Well damn, there it is! One of THE definitive Real Time Tactics games. You have to be on the ball at all times playing this game because extreme violence is always a handful of seconds away waiting to capitalise on your first mistake. As a multiplayer game it is also one of the most team play heavy games ever made.

I bet you have heard it before in other games: "If you go rambo you will only hurt your team and everyone loses because of you". In any other game that would be hyperbole that is only true sometimes but in this game it is absolutely true every single time. If you capture objectives alone, only you are awarded unlock points for the essential super weapon attacks that actually contribute to game ending tactics. You taking their objectives is a minor nuisance to the other team, and only marginally useful to your own team. The handful of points you score are not very useful on their own, so your "expertly" carried out maneuvers where you destroyed several opposing units and secured the objective alone is just one small pyrrhic victory in a meaningless skirmish.

What you need to do is to coordinate the capture with as many team mates as possible because every player that contributes to capturing the objective are awarded a handful of points. Suddenly, some five or six players have points they can pool together and unlock tactical nukes! What other game awards positive team coordination with freaking nukes to unleash upon the opposing team? There is no other game like World in Conflict! It is not a team deathmatch meat grinder where the best fighters win. If you think you are hot shit because you're wrecking opposing players you will only hear harsh words from your team mates. It doesn't matter how hard you stomp other players. You can do it flawlessly for 30 minutes and never tip the scale in your favor. You not only contributed nothing to final victory, but you actively robbed your team of the very resources they need to win the game. War heroes need not apply, this game does not care for them and actively punishes the whole team for it.
Nice to see a new Ubisoft game on GOG. Keep them coming!
Yeah. This is it. Nukular combat toe to toe with the ruskies!

Marioface5: For what it's worth, World in Conflict is already supported by GameRanger, so it should be possible to play online even after the official servers are shut down.

vicklemos: As someone who has never experienced this one via mp I'll make Konrad's words mine: the singleplayer campaign is one of the best ones I've ever played, followed closely by the R.U.S.E.'s one. So-much-fun.
That's cool, and I might pick it up sometime for that. I just wanted to make sure that the people who do want to play online know that it should continue to be an option after October 6th.

thanks for the heads up.
What a great addition!

Superb visuals, good story and solid mechanics.

A brilliant game after the extremely disappointing Ground Control 2 - a return to form!

I was just thinking of playing WiC again literally yesterday. The expansion didn't do much - a few extra levels - I was a bit annoyed after buying the main game then seeing the complete set appear shortly afterwards.

I still think Ground Control 1 is the better (and harder) single player game (with unit customization/experience system)

It also still looks & plays great.

Multiplayer in WiC is very good - a shame it's getting the plug pulled.

The "Parker" reference is a nod to Ground Control veterans despite the gender change!

Does this game include single player skirmish?

How does it compare to Wargame: European Escalation?

thanks

Telika: snip
This one is less hardcore than Men of War, you should get through it fairly fast. I don't rem if you can give orders while paused though...

Also those lyrics sure brought back memories. :)
