There's priests & rogues too!

Wizards & Warriors is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com.
The cult classic, Wizardry-like first-person RPG, returns. Wanna be an elephantoid Omphaaz, a feline Whiskah (night vision baby) or a boring human? Form a six-person team, then roam the land of Gael Cerran searching for an evil that's been going unchecked for too long and maybe lost treasure as well. Set those dungeons ablaze with magic and a mix of real-time and turn-based combat. Like old times.
Anyone bought this and can report on how it runs? I tried playing it on Windows 7 a year or so ago and it had heaps of problems and required unofficial patches.
It works fine as long you don't fiddle with the default resolution, which created some errors with character models, and reduces your mouse pooling rate (you have that option if you're using any gaming mouse) in case you have issues with the mouse movements.

Now this is an interesting release. Recall ordering it from a store from here back in 2007 I think and being told that just because it's on the site it doesn't mean they actually have or can get it. Pardon? So got it through, er, other means and gave it a go, but quickly gave up, not sure why anymore.
Still strikes me as interesting though, first classic release in a VERY long time that does (not counting any I had already (properly) played, I mean). But the reported bugs sure dampen that, and needing to change the general mouse settings or install unofficial patches just downloaded from random other sources to get it to work don't sound like valid options.
Rather strange to have a classic release during a sale too. And not even have it as part of the sale.

Yeah, I damn near missed this release because of the sale stuff distracting me.

Missed opportunity not including it prominently among the sale games.
Reading here about how glitchy it is, I have not yet bought it, as I have nothing to lose by waiting.
However if it was even 25% off, I'd have grabbed it because I'm a sucker for sales.

Not saying the regular price is too high. Only saying that because of all of these reported glitches, I will wait until they get sorted out, or until there's a sale. Otherwise, I'd have insta-bought it. I believe I still have my never-opened store-bought copy around here somewhere. I was buying literally hundreds of boxed games in the 90's and early 2000's, and I bet I never got around to opening at least half of them.

Heh. I have many bookshelf units in my house. A long time ago, I replaced all of the books that were on them with boxed computer games. Only one shelf unit still contains my favorite books. The rest of my books are all in boxes in my storage room.

destructa: Oh yeah, loved this game! My box came with 2 metal Ral Partha figures.

Ravenheart: Which Ral Partha figures? *.*
One was a...big beasty guy? And I think the other was a spellcaster. They weren't related to the PC game. It's been several years and sold when I moved 5 years ago, I hope I'm thinking of the right game box.
The game doesn't work properly? Does it make you yearn for the good old days of GOG when GOG actually cared about the quality of their releases, like missing Grandma's fresh apple cider? Is apehater going to burst in and give one of his rants but he's just preaching to people who don't care what he has to say?

tanukisuit: Ok I can't be the one here seeing that name and wondering where Kuros is?
Same!

W&W III is a favourite of mine, shame it's never got much attention, even as a Rare game.

It does, but it requires some user tweaks for some people.
From a technical standpoint, here is my experience so far in the game, I just bought.

0. Running Windows 8.1

1. The mouse movement is insanely bad at first.
The only way to fix it was by doing two things. First I reduced the mouse's polling rate from 1000hz to 125hz. Second, I increased the OS sensitivity option from my usual 6 to 11(max). Yes it does go up to 11 lol. (both from Coolermaster control panel) Third I left my dpi to 1500.
This is with a Coolermaster Xornet II and its software. I am not saying it feels 100% right, but it is over 85% so we will see how it goes. The problem that remains, although far less than without any changes, is that the in game mouse cursor sensitivity for X and Y are way different. Something that was present with other games from the same period.
Then it is the matter off the cursor feeling like it lags behind the movement you make with your hand. Again, with the aforementioned changes the movement is like 85% good. But definitely not 100%.

I don't know if I will keep the game or ask for a refund. I will try to play properly later and see how it feels.

2. The resolution the game starts at 640x480 D3D. I changed it to 1024x768. The game runs fine in both instances.

3. The combat mechanism is, I want to say f*ed up, but I will refrain till I get more time with the game. The problem I have is I just don't feel like I am in control, at all. The enemy seems to be moving in real time without any issues, as can I. Who attacks and when feels either random or real time. Yet the game is...turn based? I just don't get it. Will try to figure it out later. I will read the manual too.

4. And something funny, as I wasn't properly playing, just trying to see if the game runs, I created one character, bought him a sword and a shirt (no pants) and got out of the village/hub. First encounter in like 5 seconds, 2-3 rats. I easily killed them. Moved a bit further, 20-30 seconds in the world (which looks a bit pixelated but lovely) and I got attacked by what felt like a half a dozen rats. With support...from about a dozen humans. They all attacked me.
I don't know the lore of the game or if this is some type of artificial way of blocking you from going certain way, but it felt ridiculous to see an army of men and rats attacking me.

Will see...

It seems that the old and famous bug "I can't Enter Buildings Or Go Through Gates Bug" is still here for me... Is anyone has the same problem? Thx.

nick187: how long is this game ?
If you play it without fixing the mouse, between now and eternity.

Was lost as well, but then figure it out (think so). It's actually turn-based. Do not move, select hero and for example shoot. Then select next one e.c. Then enemies will move/attack. If you want move - select one player and move. I can't say I like battle mechanics, but it's ok.
