A hardcore, 2D action-platformer where only precision can keep you from death – Volgarr the Viking II is here!

Players of the original game will feel right at home on this relentless voyage, even with the addition of new power-ups, new forms of magic, new enemy types, and a chest-thumping new soundtrack. While the sequel delivers the same unforgiving 1980s-arcade level of difficulty as the original, Volgarr the Viking II also (mercifully, begrudgingly) offers modern quality-of-life options such as checkpoints, save states, and an undead mode.

Now on GOG!
Nice, long waited sequel is finally released!
Congratulations!
Sorry, won't buy this. You made the first too hard...
Loved the first Völgarr, played a ton of it. The only game I felt a real sports challenge grab to better my run times. Tough, as a classic skill-based arcade title should be, ever fair throughout. The fantastic soundtrack on top. Invest time to learn, blood, and sweat, get a true sense of accomplishment in return. The sequel dropped out of nowhere, fantastic. Fire sword times, once more.

Also, listen to these enthusiasts: Explode Into Bones
[banner art] I bet Volgarr's facial hair shames the average dwarf. Hopefully explored in game (lore).
Oh yesssss!
Got the first day one, didn't regret. Absolutely great game - but not for everyone. Unapologetically hard, and I can respect that, the devs deliberately chose this over sales. But no two ways about it: if you're not borderline masochist with your self imposed challenges, you'll get only frustration from it... despite being an easy 5/5 stars for me, I cannot recommend it but to super hardcore fanatics like yours truly.
I played a lot of it, finished it several times with the secret ending (one deathless! Wish I recorded) and scoring a pretty decent time too.
I'm totally picking up this one as soon as I can, although... almost 11 years passed since the first Volgarr, it wouldn't surprise me if I never managed to finish it. Thank you, aging!

Don't be fooled by the minimum and recommended requirements. I tested this on a 13 year old laptop with i5 480m-2.66ghz (I think this is first generation! XD), 4GB RAM (DDR3) with an Intel HD Graphics! And it worked very well, with no fps drops or stuttering. A game, technically, very well optimized for potatoes... Something rare to see in many current 2D games.

Edit: Forgot to mention that the laptop is running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

Now a message for the developers...

Dear developers, here are two suggestions: If possible, release a patch for the first Volgarr rebalancing the difficulty. Many new players, when playing the first, will simply move away from the second, and if they play the second and go to the first, they will have a bad experience in terms of difficulty. Of course, this only applies to those who, like me, don't like extremely difficult games.

Well, the second suggestion concerns the mouse pointer, I remapped the attack to the left mouse button and the right mouse button to the jump, and I noticed that the pointer is visible during gameplay, the pointer should be hidden during gameplay. I won't call this a "bug", as many will play with a gamepad and others won't mind the pointer "coming and going" during gameplay, hehe. If possible, make the pointer visible only in the menus or when the player pauses the gameplay.

That's all... Best regards to everyone! ;)

Thanks much, that's relevant for me. I'm still on a similar machine and planned to wait until I buy a current system.
I'm determined to finish the first game before buying this sequel, so maybe in another decade...

Joking aside, the game looks great from what I've seen and love the soundtrack.

^ 100% agree with this. The difficulty was too much or maybe I'm just getting too old. All I know is, the almost non-spawns that happened too fast. If just in front, it might have been ok, but they spawned equally fast behind also. Then the part where they barely touch you...and you die. I think I put up a good fight for an hour, but that's my limit...for time and patience.

If the developers want only hardcore gamers, more power to them. But if they want to sell to casual players like me, then they need to add an easier mode option or else it's a waste of money for us casuals.

So no, Volgarr II is a big skip for me. Thanks.

P.S. Thanks for bringing it to GOG though, for those that do want the game. :)

The dev has confirmed on Steam that if you can run the first one fine, the sequel should as well:

"The specs are listed in that manner because of modern SDKS blah blah and boring stuff. You are correct in that it will run on much older hardware than what is stated there but we have to list that (its been over 10 years).

Can you tell me what in particular you are worried about, or what it is you are trying to run it on? If you are running the first game fine the 2nd game shouldnt be a problem for you. The one thing I would say is that it does take up a lot more hard drive space. The game is significantly bigger. "

Since GOG doesn't appreciate linking to other stores, you can find the thread in the discussions for Volgarr II: "System Requirements on store page?".

You're welcome, mate! However, it doesn't seem to be working for some... See:

Volgarr 2 is much easier than the first, and it has a "god" mode that will make things a little easier... See: https://steamcommunity.com/app/2195140/discussions/0/4515506995733353472/

It will be great if they release a patch for the first one with this "undead" mode. =D

Before I tested it, I swore it wouldn't work, I even thought about installing it on another PC, but I went ahead and was shocked when I saw it working, hehe. I like it when these things happen! =)

I trust the dev team here to work it out. I mean, they produced a Dreamcast port of the first Völgarr and offered it for free, they're the good guys in my book :) That they're again focusing on optimizing the second game is just being true to their coding ethic of the past I figure. Thanks again for reporting on this in the first place, it came as a surprise to me too that you could possibly run this on ancient hardware.

SilentMRG: Snip
Thanks for the insight!
Much easier than 1, you say? Hmmm. Good fir my old bones! XD

By the way, now that I think about it: long ago, way before Volgarr 2 was ever even mentioned, the devs announced another game called "Eternal Helix". I wonder what happened to that.

Edit: just googling was enough. Duh. Should really do that before I speak.
