Greetings, Hunters!

<span class="bold">Victor Vran</span>, an action filled next step in aRPG design, is available now for Windows and Mac - complete with GOG Galaxy Achievements, DRM-free, and 10% off for the first week!

In a genre that's seen immense highs and extended lows, it seems that we're always waiting for the secret formula for the perfect action RPG. Some say it's all about an overwhelming amount of loot, upgrades and treats galore. Others choose to experiment with new and innovative ways to connect their players, or to give them new types of control over making their character one of a kind. Victor Vran brings its own answers to the table.

It's a game that places movement and action first, truly putting the "action" in the aRPG, eliminating the boundaries of a traditional class system, and opting for freeform gear-based progression. A combat-oriented approach doesn't mean that Victor Vran is lacking in the other departments either - there's plenty of loot to collect and increasingly awesome weapons to find (including what looks an awful lot like a lightsaber) as well as innovative character progression. All that's there, however, is enhanced by an unprecedented movement system that will have you (and up to 4 of your co-op buddies) leaping, dodging and wallrunning. It's a game where survival is based on so much more than how hard you can hit.

classicgogger: Now it gets interesting. Do *we* agree that it's *necessary* to play Victor Vran online (even singleplayer) so all players share the same experience?
in the same way as all players have to play through galaxy to have the same experience. because otherwise they lack achievements and gametime tracking.

also, why are you really surprised that there are singleplayer online games out there? i'd like to remind you that very old diablo 2 could be played singleplayer while online and yes experience would differ - because server rolled your drops, not your local machine. and yet the game did not have any drm or mandatory authentication.

essentially: victor vran has offline single-player mode and kind of hybrid online-singleplayer mode as well. what's the difference between this and a game that has offline single player and online multiplayer? you sitll have singleplayer drm-free always working offline.

HijacK: You, sir, deserve a +1 for an amazing explanation and for making me laugh with that Portuguese saying. Cheers!

Scorpionscythe: Not sure what is so funny or why the other person assumes I am yelling. I don't care either way about it having drm as I just won't buy it. Seems like the ones yelling are the ones assuming everyone else is.
I didn't say jack about yelling and I don't care one bit what you do. Get your ego straight, mate.
I'm getting seriously annoyed by and tired of this whole discussion, so let me just say this:

Apparently, there's an extra Q&A twitch stream of Victor Vran planned for Monday on the GOGcom channel. I would recommend every one interested in this issue to look for news on the GOGcom Twitch schedule thread and, if possible, attend the stream so you can ask the devs all you want to, pertaining this matter. You can also harass and attack them, which I'm guessing is more in line with reality.

Randoo: Who talked about multiplayer or achievements ? What are you two blabbering about ?
I wasn't expecting you to comprehend that basic of a comparison either, but sometimes it's just sad when I'm right.

groze: The game is exactly the same even without the treasure hunts. Yes, they only drop online, but they aren't required to enjoy the single player experience of the game. It's the same game for everyone, if everyone only plays it offline.
I think the problem is that many people on here still haven't got a clue what the "treasure hunt" actually is and therefore fear it could be something that is "missing" from single player in a way.

CarrionCrow: Go on with life, play some games and enjoy yourself. =)
This red eye is wise. I think I'll go back to Terraria now. :D
avatar
CarrionCrow: Wouldn't worry too much about it.

Worst-case scenario, and the sky is actually falling, just slowly so people won't notice until it's too late?
Take that advance knowledge, grab whatever you want to be able to hang onto, back it all up thoroughly, then sit back and watch as GOG implodes.

Or, if it's just a matter of a developer putting something together quickly that they thought would add a little extra something to their game being released, using the infrastructure they already spent time and money to set up, and GOG went along since the core game is DRM-free and the other stuff is optional?
Go on with life, play some games and enjoy yourself. =)
Best advise in this whole thread... shame others can't take it that way. +1

d2t: the bonus code is part of the bigger system that developers created for users playing online mode of the game. if you play online you will get multiple such code bonuses with bounties or treause keys and yes, they could carry over to singleplayer
This actually makes me feel better.

Initially I was concerned (and a bit alarmed) that GoG would go this route for a bonus piece of content instead of simply allowing it to be downloaded.

Knowing that there's a system in place that allows multiplayer to crossover into single player and gain similar bonuses, I now understand why the one time bonus was handled as a login instead of as DLC on a library page.

Unlike a few, I don't have a problem with servers and such for multiplayer (duh!). With modern / new games I actually prefer it rather than having to go through cumbersome direct IP connections, individually maintained and distinct servers, virtual LANs etc etc etc. Just let me click "multiplayer" in-game with a bunch of friends and be done with it LOL ;)
Just a little idea: Why don't make a video-presentation? A video coming from the community for the community to inform about these problems. So everybody could see that there is no need for qualms or the criticism has its basics and the game has there DRM-problems.

jsjrodman: Unfortunately two different (related) single player features require online. The "exclusive bonus", and the ingame treasure map feature. The bonus is one-time (in every sense, you are online-check prevented from using it in second game), while the treasure map is potentially ongoing.
avatar
BKGaming: But lets not leave out that it does not stop you from obtaining the same said content offline by playing. In my opinion if it requires online then it not a single player feature, it's more of a MP feature that integrates with single player. This is one of these games were they both interact with each other.

Sort of like the online feature in Dark Souls were you could see players who have died and read messages from them...
Yeah it's completely like Dark Souls . Also

http://www.gog.com/forum/general/release_victor_vran_92633/post758 :)

I don't understand people . If there is LAN game or IP based MP those accounts would be a DRM but already MP games handled by their servers . Like other MP games here . And many of them for example Saints Row 3's MP portion removed before release GOG . Age of Wonders 3 require same MP account with keys . It's completely same .

lazydog: I have had time to sleep on this and consider it all.

I have decided to post again on this topic because I truly do think there is something just not quite right about the whole thing.

Whether or not you consider this to be DRM within an otherwise DRM free release, whether or not you consider this an acceptable release on a DRM free platform, I believe that there is a damn good reason why it is being done and I will give an example. Again, whether or not you think the example is relevant is entirely up to you.

A dev that shall go unnamed some time ago decided to allow a retail game to be linked to a steam account at no expense to the player. No one said anything, many welcomed it. A few months later, optional DLC (similar to what is being offered here-completely optional and in no way impacting on the overall game) was released, but this time could only be accessed via steam. I said something, few listened. A few months later, their new release was announced-steam exclusive only. With hindsight the whole thing was bait for marketing research to move to a new DRM platform.

Perhaps I am being paranoid you say? Maybe I am. But this optional one time extra has definitely been done for a damn good reason (reinforced by the fact the code exists in the base game already). I believe at the very least it is for some marketing purpose, intention unknown. We all know that modern DRM is just as interested in gathering information as it is in protecting its product.

I believe people should be asking the dev and Gog exactly why this policy has been allowed, they must have known it would be an issue for many-regardless of your stance on DRM and this game.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post, it is not a rant- just my suspicious mind saying there is obviously some method here.

For the record I will not be purchasing this game.
You are wise. We will light both the joss sticks and the dynamite in your name.
Are you guys still at it... ? That's what I call dedication! Or severe boredom. :P

I think a bit of both? This an the constant whining and complaining when people haven't even played, let alone buy the game, kinda fatigued any decent argument.

You demand an awful lot from people just to satisfy your curiosity whether the game is worth buying or not. Try youtube maybe.

throgh: Just to note: I haven't read all new postings but some of the recent postings are beyond what I'd personal call nice and mature. We are now on the normal level for a gaming-forum: Unfriendly, partly arrogant with peoples arguments and intentions. And of course it is called "over-reacting" when somebody is writing about worries regarding this game and its release. Please have a closer look an your own texts at some point. The discussion until the early hours on this day was very emotional but friendly. Now we talk about "whining". :-(
Well, it is overreacting when you can get the same stuff in the game.
The only differance is that you can get it earlier instead of actually playing the game to get the same stuff yourself.
Hence its not DRM.
The devs have only moved files from one place in the Game to another making it a cheat since youre getting stuff you are not suposed to get until later in the game or end.

You'd think that after some 800+ posts or so, everything meaningful that can be said on this issue(?) has already been said. I get the impression by now people are just repeating themselves ( or others ) and there's not much point in continuing this discussion.

Just buy the game, or don't, folks -- your choice. Maybe even contact the developer, if it really bothers you that much and if you have a suggestion how they could handle this better. ( Just make sure you're polite and reasonable about it, if at all possible. And guys, stop spamming the game's product page here on GOG. I think it's fair to inform others about the potential DRM issues, but there's no need for a dozen such "reviews", nor is it fair to keep downrating the entire game based on it, especially if you haven't even tried it. Geez. )

The funny thing is, if and when I buy a copy of the game, I wouldn't even want to use that special "bonus". As I understand, it's basically just a cheat anyway, to make things a little easier at the start.
