BKGaming: GOG makes it quite clear what DRM free means to them. Which matters more than what it means to you because they advertise DRM free games and as far as I am concerned this game does not break on what they advertise as DRM free. An online check is not the same thing as online authentication. Authentication for a cheat is not an annoyance because it totally optional, but authentication for playing would be.

And just to clarify: It would be part of a question to be asked the developer why there is this kind of multiplayer. Perhabs this has also something to do with the used framework the game is relying on.

j0ekerr: The whole AoW3 controversy flew right over my head so I have no idea.

But I do think it's a form of DRM since they are in a way, managing and limiting how you access a portion of the game content.

It's also an almost unavoidable form of DRM. Particularly where dedicated servers are concerned. But I don't even think it's all bad, It doesn't stop you from playing the game offline, yet it can get your average CODBro banned, which is always a good thing.
Dedicated servers for MP is a pretty good thing. As long as it is nicely regulated and you give me the option of maybe renting a server just to mess around with my friends I have no problem with it. Honestly, people who expect MP in 2015 with no strings attached need a serious expectation check.

I've seen so many people who want the Total War series to come here to GOG, but I don't think they even fathom how much the MP portion of the games has grown. It is like an outright strategy RPG, and all that information has to be stored on some kind of server just so you could play MP from any PC you want to.

Truthfully I don't care, it doesn't effect me at all, I just find it really silly to not only ruin possibly a good game for a silly thing and possibly ruin it for us getting more games by this dev.

I understand this to mean that there are some side-quests (e.g. treasure hunts) that you cannot obtain unless you are connected online. Is that how you understand it?
I'm contacting the devs and I'll leave a post on the general forum when I get a straight answer. The basics of my query were; do these hunts unlock areas that are unavailable while playing offline only, do these hunts unlock loot that is unattainable if I were offline only.

I'm tired of people running in circles on the matter, so I'm going to get the information straight from the horse's mouth.

Thick skin? I do not know which thread you read, but people here are having a discussion if an ingame online claiming mechanism for single player purposes is ok in a drm free store.

Nobody got called names, no swear words, no defamation, no personal attacks. Actually the GOG community is a place where such discussions can take place without being derailed by personal attacks or any moderators to ban people.

Looking at the reviews and what I saw on twitch, this seems like a very good game. And the game itself is not what is being discussed from my point of view..

That not an online check... if have you played Sim City or Diablo 3, that is an online check.

About that, what I think is:

The game has dedicated servers for multiplayer.
Server maintenance and bandwidth cost money.
If there isn't any kind of check, users with pirated copies can log in freely.
The company has the servers full of players who didn't buy their game.
Somebody pulls the plug on the servers because they're bleeding money.

Yes it's oversimplified, but it's quite easy to reach that kind of reasoning, and easy to see why too.

No I'm not searching for another reason to continue. Perhabs you've read my last conclusion here?

Seems that at all I could not count me to the target group for this game. Perhabs giving this another look when the linux-version is available. But with the missing LAN-mode it won't be my favorite. The splitscreen sounds like a little bit of fun though but it cannot replace a good LAN-session with friends or family. :-)

And just to note: Yes, I have a problem with centralized structures. As you have note the "multiplayer in 2015" that is not my personal expectation. I don't want to rent servers playing on and refuse strings attached. In fact: ONLINE-multiplayer is functional by that way. But I'm speaking about LAN-modes with no internet-connection.

I agree, dedicated server based MP does need some sort of authentication and/or control.

While technicallty DRM, it's not the bad kind of DRM, since it doesn't hamper your offline experience. not does it nag you to keep the disc in the tray or enter a serial key at different points in the game.

To be more clear an online check is when you either need internet to play (both SP and MP) or you have to "check in" online every so often or you game access will be revoked.

Playing MP is not online check...

You need an account to be validated on every login. The games you've mentioned have also a dedicated check in a defined amount of time if the connection to centralized serversystem could be established. But we could argue the rest of the day on that. So we should stop this here or better to say: I'll do for now. I don't want to play the forum-game who is right or who is wrong. Perhabs this question could be part of asking the devs for further answers on that. Let's see! :-)

But a little sidenote: The community itself here on GOG is very grown up regarding this discussion. I have seen other threads on external forums from publishers and developers and this one was / is very neutral on that. No insult, just critics.

LAN could be a good addition which I would support, but as far as online multiplayer goes I think people need to understand there needs to be some kind of management. Let's take this "no strings attached" view many of the people on this thread hold and transcend it into daily life. Is an idealistic system of anarchy truly better than a flawed governmental type?

Well I'm just giving you the broad definition of an online check in gaming (particularly PC), this has been what an online check is since DRM in relation to the internet became a thing...

So I won't argue with you and just leave you with that...
