Meteor shower. Stop. People are dying. Stop. Send help. Stop.

The 2001 first-person 3D shooter Venom. Codename: Outbreak, a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. spiritual predecessor by GSC Game World, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows.

You are sent to investigate the site of a meteor shower that left no survivors - after the scientists, followed by a military squad, disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Could it be aliens, or just a form of mass psychosis? That’s for you to find out.

In Venom. Codename: Outbreak your squad will be a very candid affair - just you and another soldier to watch your back. Fortunately, everyone on base is the best of the best and the AI of the game’s NPCs got many a word of praise, so you shouldn’t have to worry too much about them not doing their job. Should something start to go wrong, you can easily switch characters and take control of your partner - or play through the missions with a friend in 2-player LAN co-op mode. Sometimes, this will be one of the keys to getting through a mission alive.

Try to solve the mystery of the valley showered with meteors in Venom. Codename: Outbreak DRM-free at GOG.com - and most of all, try to get back alive.

What does the press say?

“Crawling across the forest floor to tag a one-shot kill on a guard whose head was barely visible in a tower at 186 meters is a thrill unlike any other.” -- GameSpy

“Outbreak seems almost surreally whimsical in its treatment of a special forces vs. alien conflict.” -- Game Over Online

“Codename: Outbreak is a fun game. Especially the later missions in the campaign which are particularly atmospheric and intense, requiring careful picking of character skills and meticulous execution of strategies.” -- Play.tm

triock: It's not that bad, finished it long time ago, one of the few FPS I really enjoyed.
Do you know if it can run in a window?
avatar
timppu: Aaah... I didn't even see that. I guess laptops were the coolest thing back then.
avatar
vicklemos: As they are now! For me, a laptop in 2002 was something beyond some wild dream!

Grargar: There is also the GSC-developed Hover Ace, but it's currently published by Strategy First.

vicklemos: Firestarter is an old fav of mine. Was it a hit outside Ukraine/EU?
To my knowledge, both games saw a limited release (few copies made, few copies sold) and quickly faded into obscurity. The lack of online multiplayer was probably the main culprit, especially for Firestarter.

P.S. Sorry for the late reply.

I bought it when it was originally released and played it for a while though I never got far. Interesting concept but the execution was rather mediocre IIRC.

IronArcturus: Wow, I've never heard of this FPS before! How is the game?
same here, i been around for a while sinds atari 2600 c64 amiga and the likes, win 3.11 to current win7
p100 to quad cores and 8 cores and the likes, but i cant remember this game, i also read reviews that its buggy?

There's load of old games out there, loads of dos games aswell
old games i have on cd:
Touché: The Adventures of the Fifth Musketeer and more like that , i got it to work but it doesnot work everytime so its quite a hassle for me to get it work,
Bermuda syndrome (16bits) (works but you have to play around with the old win3.11 filemanger or something like that and thats quite a hassle)

Elkmoon Murder fmv videogame, (2 cd) i have it it , looks still like new but i cant play it on win xp or win7 thanks to microsoft who needs to make new windows so nothing old will run again :D
I wonder what win10 will do to all old games?

would be great if games like these would be on GOG, just like the indiana jones adventure , zak mckraken, monkey island that i insta bought.

I'm also hoping GOG will eventually get a deal with Microsoft. They've made a ton of great PC games! Wouldn't it be great to see Age of Empires or Freelancer on GOG?
according to the review here this game is total shit

apehater: according to the review here this game is total shit
According to review here some people had their ass kicked by squad-based gameplay wanting COD style and no, it wasn't shit when released, not even graphics. I still remember interview and premier gameplay from Game One channel. It's like Jagged Alliance in first person, you switch between teammates and improvise or arrange scenarios what happen where, never heard about AI because there is none, only orders/situation like like triggers. Enemy AI always played hostile, tried to surround you or avoided at best trying hide but always had 1 weak point in their behaviour pattern that you should learn to kill easilly.

Nah no worries. Too bad devs made few copies only.
I remember this one scored nicely on major sites and that's what kept my interested in it, so I should give it another go once it's here (I hope!)

Thanks

edit: Good IGN review, a must read

I don't know about that... :( After all, right now there is e.g. a TV commercial here where the joke is how one old man takes out and turns on his old bulky laptop PC, while the more modern people sitting beside him use tablets. Come on pops, a laptop? Where's your pipe? Then in the next scene the man is using a tablet instead, and seems relieved he's among the normal people again.

Ok of course that is not quite the truth, I see kids using laptops even nowadays on top of their tablets. Who knows, maybe PCs/laptops will become retro-cool again, similarly like vinyl LP records? :)

Of course I don't really care how cool something is in the eyes of others, other than whether it makes it so unpopular that it becomes a niche.
