There will be blood. Delicious blood.

Vampire®: The Masquerade - Bloodlines™, the timeless RPG masterpiece that has sucked many a gamer's time, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com.

Intoxicating. Macabre. Vital. These are both traits of blood and of Vampire®: The Masquerade - Bloodlines™, the RPG that forever changed expectations on how the creatures of the night should be depicted in videogames. Was it the ridiculous replayability? The versatility of our vampiric abilities? The gripping visual and sound design? Perhaps the memorable NPCs and stellar writing. One thing is for certain: much like the daunting Antediluvians, this is a game whose allure only grows stronger with time. No point in resisting it any longer.

Sink your teeth into the definitive bloodsucking experience that is Vampire®: The Masquerade - Bloodlines™, DRM-free on GOG.com.

Note: This version includes third-party technical fixes, courtesy of Wesp5. The full unofficial patch, which also includes additional content, can be found over at Patches Scrolls.

Yeah. Currently, it's on page 25 if you sort games by best selling. Very good for a $20 game.

Yep, a perfect example of a true "cult classic". Plus, in my VERY biased opinion, despite its age (I mean it's not OLD old, but ya know) and buggy reputation, Bloodlines is EASILY worth $20. But yeah, I'm biased as it has remained in my "top five games of all time" ever since my very first playthrough.

aJillSandwich: So confused.. does the Basic version of the Wesp5 mod contain ONLY technical fixes, and no other differences from the vanilla version? Or does it also have some other changes to the game, in addition to technical fixes?

If I just want the vanilla game (without any non-technical changes), but with the fewest possible technical problems, should I install the so-called "True Patch" mod instead of the Wesp5 mod?
avatar
Lucky4LeafClova: The Unofficial Patch essentially started off as a restoration project similar to TSLRCM (The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod) for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II. Due to feedback, the Unofficial Patch was later split into two versions included in the one download: basic and plus.

Basic was an attempt to be as close to the vanilla game as possible while fixing bugs and bugs alone. Over the years the basic patch has become more basic while the plus version of the Unofficial Patch has included restorations (large and small) and tweaked gameplay in addition to the bug fixes featured in the basic version of the Unofficial Patch.

There's an alternative to the Unofficial Patch called the True Patch and AFAIK it was made in response to the Unofficial Patch not allowing users to choose between basic and plus content. There's still some argument to this day over which patch is better (and thankfully it's a lot more civil from the 2 sides) but both are absolutely fine. I do prefer the Unofficial Patch and that's no secret because it also allows for native widescreen and addresses some annoying issues some Windows 10, 8 and 7 users will face. In addition, the Unofficial Patch has fixed a lot more bugs because the True Patch had ceased development many years ago (I never got to do much of a playthrough with the True Patch sadly). In my honest opinion, the Unofficial Patch is a great vanilla experience and if you want the least technical problems you'll definitely want the Unofficial Patch because of what I just mentioned.

Hope this helps!

hyperagathon: Lucky4LeafClova gave the context, but let me answer the question. Even the Basic version modifies the game in ways unacceptable to anyone wanting a vanilla experience. Download the unmodified version (to reiterate the official response, you get both vanilla and patched versions upon purchase) and apply the True Patch. I've played through the game twice that way - spent around 80 hours on it - and never experienced any issues - bugs or crashes. This was on Linux using WINE, so YMMV with regards to the latter.
Thank you both for the info. One last question: How do the Unofficial Patch and the "True Patch" mod compare to just running the official patch for the game (version 1.2)?

Lemon_Curry: Would you care to elaborate on that by including a few examples?
avatar
hyperagathon: I would have hoped that anyone interested would spare me the time necessary to google this again, but oh well. Here are the Basic version changes, quoted from http://vtmb.wikia.com/wiki/Unofficial_Patch:

Fixed game logic, quests, locations, dialog options, interface, items and weapons
Fixed graphical glitches, missing sounds and game crashes
Added widescreen support
Improved balancing
Restored real-world names of weapons
Basic multiplayer functionality
avatar
hyperagathon: Only the first two are actual fixes, widescreen and multiplayer don't interest me, but between those two, we have the two offenders. Or so you might conclude from this. In reality, the first bullet point is not that innocent either - they've "fixed" stuff in there that wasn't broken, such as changing item locations. Arbitrarily. Because wesp5 knows best. Which I assume was the guiding idea when "improving" balance as well.
So, the original developers didn't have a problem with Wesp's Unofficial patch, but you have. It's of course human to have such problems, but you must know that you belong in a minority.
And since i've not read any complaints from the Troika devs, it really sounds like you guys are overreacting.

But it would be good to have the vanilla version, just to play with.

Vanilla version is included as vampire.exe.12 (find it in the game directory).

I agree with you, and I don't think your opinion is biased. +22220 voted for this great game. Based on reviews and user rating, people really love Bloodlines.

If you do, well… you shouldn’t ;P
I'm sorry for the confusion. I'm currently running Bloodlines in Windows for now. I definitely stick with the open source radeon drivers when using Linux. I've been meaning to get Ubuntu up and running again though but that's a problem for next week. I'm just glad to know it's working well. :)

You're very welcome. Before you're even able to start a new game both versions 1.0 and 1.2 on modern systems (especially if you're on Windows 7, 8 and 10) are likely to crash at start up for a number of reasons or crash as soon as you click "new game". The Unofficial Patch addresses most of these issues but if you're not keen on it there are a number of solutions in this Steam guide:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=113161476

1.0 is very buggy whilst 1.2 is mostly playable but do expect quite a bit of bugs as well as a few gamebreakers (these can be circumvented by using the in-game console and typing in "noclip" (without quotes) and hitting the Enter key on your keyboard -- that'll allow you to pass through normally impassable objects.... Once you've got past the troublesome area, just type in "noclip" again to turn the cheat code off).

There's also a constant crash during the Society of Leopold quest when you enter a boat so be prepared to use the console once more here. What you'll need to do (from vampyri_lestat's walkthrough):
1. Get to the boat and approach it, do not get into the boat, but very close.
2. Open the console using the tilde "~" key.
3. Type the following commands:

If you saved Johansen:
SaveJohansen()

Then to start level transition if you're anybody but a Nosferatu:
changelevel2 la_hub_1 taxi_landmark

Or to start level transition if you're a Nosferatu:
changelevel2 la_hub_1 sewer_map_landmark

4. If you get to the next level and you do not have any items in your inventory reload your previous save (make sure you have a discreet save and are not just using the autosave) and try it again, but stand closer to the boat.

Just in case anyone missed my previous comment from page 29 and because I've got a higher rep here, I'll repost part of my older comment with links now (it's helpful for those who has issues with the game or for those who wish to listen to the amazing soundtrack for this game):

If anyone has any problems with Vampire - The Masquerade: Bloodlines, I'd invite them to look at this Steam guide:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=113161476
I'm well aware most people here won't run into Steam-specific issues but if you happen to run into something problematic, there's a good chance this guide addresses it.

And if anyone's after a way to get the complete soundtrack, then there's a link that might interest you. As I stated in the Steam discussion for it that I've linked below... I'm not sure if this is legal or not so if there's any problem with it from the moderators, I'll be happy to take it down (the soundtrack is much better than the mp3 files that are included in the "sound" subfolder of this game's main folder). Here's the link to the Steam discussion and to download it:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/2600/discussions/0/483366528913878730/

Enjoy! And if anyone has any issues with this game, I'd be happy to help them on this thread. I'm not always on GOG so you'll have to forgive me if if I'm slow to respond and the like.

I checked all those files - they are at the same quality as game files (128 Kbps mp3). So I don't think they are better.

shmerl: Though I wonder if Activision is out of distribution terms for other operating systems, why can't GOG produce Wine based Linux package as well?

shmerl: Installing patch+ enables hisotry as well during character creation.
No no no no no, the + patch alters content and changes things to the game... Basic is best, closest to vanilla with fixes only thrown in! What i proposed enables histories during character creation too, but without changing the game and altering it, through the + patch's application.

I don't mind really. I played both many times. But for new players it's recommended to first play basic before playing patch+.
