There will be blood. Delicious blood.

Vampire®: The Masquerade - Bloodlines™, the timeless RPG masterpiece that has sucked many a gamer's time, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com.

Intoxicating. Macabre. Vital. These are both traits of blood and of Vampire®: The Masquerade - Bloodlines™, the RPG that forever changed expectations on how the creatures of the night should be depicted in videogames. Was it the ridiculous replayability? The versatility of our vampiric abilities? The gripping visual and sound design? Perhaps the memorable NPCs and stellar writing. One thing is for certain: much like the daunting Antediluvians, this is a game whose allure only grows stronger with time. No point in resisting it any longer.

Sink your teeth into the definitive bloodsucking experience that is Vampire®: The Masquerade - Bloodlines™, DRM-free on GOG.com.

Sorry if this has been asked, but out of curiosity, do any of these games connect in any way?

Only in as much as they take place in the same universe AFAIK.

Well, they are both set in the Vampire: The Masquerade world but they do not connect story-wise or anything :)

Leroux: You guys shouldn't complain about the price so much, after all it was to be expected that the game wouldn't be released here for half of its price on Steam and (previously) DotEmu. And who knows if the price wasn't part of the reason why it did not arrive on GOG earlier. If GOG had announced that we won't see Bloodlines here only due to its price, I bet a lot of people would have protested as well.

Look at the bright side of it:
- Bloodlines is finally here!
- And it's not using regional pricing, so (at least for customers in Western Europe) it's actually slightly cheaper than it is on Steam and than it was on DotEmu.
- Now that it's here, it will probably go on sale one day, so if you were waiting for a chance to buy the game DRM-free for around $10, that chance has become a very likely probability now. :)
I think most people don't complain about the asking price but they would have expected at least a little release discount. ;)

And unfortunately the GOG version has one huge downside - it's only available in english while the Steam and retail-versions are also available in german and french.

MBiL_248: I second that absolutely! The trailer to this is shown in the main menu of Lands of Lore 2, and every time it plays I think it would be very interesting to play this one. :)

jadeblackhawk: I own the box from way back when, it's a great game. Unfortunately, it is broken after you get to a certain city if you're playing on anything later than win98. It would be so awesome if gog could get it and fix it, would certainly be an instabuy from me :D
We need a working emulator for older windows versions - some sort of WINBox I mean. I think I would buy this game as well, your feedback fits my first impression. Seems to be a forgotten gem.
Wow! That's awesome news. It's one of the best RPGs ever made and besides Age of Decadence no better games has been released since then (IMO). Definitely worth that price.
Nice! Good thing I never bought this on Steam!

Sorry son, unlike the World of Darkness MMO which planned to add gay-bars into the game world and got cancelled, the clubs in both redemption and bloodlines are normal ones. I really doubt you should be wanting to buy them.

adaliabooks: What kind of RPG is it? What's the closest comparison to another game?

markrichardb: Not sure it has one. Bloodlines is a single-character RPG where you’re hastily inducted into the shadowy world of vampire politics and tossed between factions who take hold of your arms and legs and pull for all they’re worth. Aside from being able to sneak, intimidate, or charm your way out of many situations, the starting decision of selecting a clan can significantly change the game. Bloodlines is also praised for its atmosphere and features one of the scariest levels in gaming.
Haha, yeah, very difficult to find a game to compare it to. It's the kind of game where you run around for a while, talk to people, figure things out, get into trouble, and praise yourself for getting out of it in one piece. And then after a few hours you happen on a segment that looks a bit of out of place. And you realize it appears out of place because it looks like something that resembles an actual videogame. And then you're back on track.

It's very odd, for a game. Very careful writing, that strikes some curious balance between being easy to digest while also being very compact. Scripting in general tends to be linear, in spite of things, but you run into alternate paths and side-dishes so often that you very rarely feel like the outcome is set. And it usually isn't, there's always some twist at the end that isn't telegraphed, so your choices tend to be important. But the most impressive part of the writing is that when you run into alternate paths, either from player choice or from vampire clan affiliation, you often don't notice that you were entering the segment at a different angle from a mechanical viewpoint. Or, you could play through a segment/quest that had several alternative paths and never get to the "choose a or b" style critical points, and simply believe that you were playing the segment in the one way it was supposed to go.

So while the narrative isn't extremely interactive, where it succeeds so well is where your character and your choices are reflected in what other characters say, etc., without becoming generic and predetermined. And that's what makes the atmosphere so solid, that you're not playing a faceless vampire fledgeling with different skins, but get enough input to almost always believe that your character exists. Or, it's not immediately awesome to you as a player, how much work went into this, but it does wonders for the suspension of disbelief. It's much better crafted than people give it credit for - even before the patches, you would of course see some inconsistency and react to it. But then miss all the hundred other times where everything fit together perfectly. There's basically more writing in any sidequest than Fallout 3 has throughout the entire game.

I mean, you're always apprehensive about games that are heavy on the story-telling, because you imagine a lot of filler and weird isolated segments that have no relation to each other. That tire you out, break up the pacing badly, or doesn't seem worth the investment, and it just demands too much of you at every point for you to immerse yourself in it. A lot of people prefer story-less games because of that, so they don't have to sit and concentrate heavily on every line to figure out if you should bother to taking notice. You know, "what sort of random arbitrary story do I have to suffer through now to get to the interesting parts". So when you run into something like Bloodlines it's ok to say it's a unique achievement, because it's not an exaggeration.

It's been called the best introduction ever made to the World of Darkness, which it probably is. But it stands on it's own as a very good story as well.

Ah ... I see. Good point.
Sorry Bradley, but I refuse to get into a battle of the wits with an unarmed man.

You are on your own here.

Unofficial Patch 9.5 only works with the English version for now anyways. That being said, we'll make sure to get the missing languages out to all but we had to make sure that the game worked as expected before releasing it :)
