What is Undertale anyway?

Undertale, a most peculiar RPG adventure, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 20% launch discount.

What is Undertale? It's a good, tough question. It's a particularly weird little game — a textbook case of so unusual and special, that saying too much might end up a disservice.

The adorable 8-bit RPG is, like most things in life and Undertale, an unassuming layer of lies. Lies, beneath which lies one of the most interesting indie games in recent memory — Undertale the RPG where talking your way out of every fight is an option, but then so is total genocide. It's a game that throws countless twists at you — abstract encounters with absurd enemies, the most unexpected consequences to your actions, and vastly varying experiences that are 100% your fault. Who you are, and how your Undertale plays out will change everything — even your next inevitable playthrough.

Your most peculiar adventure begins with Undertale, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. The launch discount will last for one week, until March 8, 1:59 PM GMT.

omega64: Little bit of column A, little bit of columb B.

phaolo: We meet again, dr. omega64 :P
So the game is good, but not great, I guess.

avatar
Fenixp: It's entirely unique and defies all expectations. And since people weren't expecting much of the game, they rated it quite highly.
avatar
phaolo: Ah I see, good point.
It probably depends on the kind of person you are. :P

Zoidberg: I disagree with you about Stanley Parable not having substance.

Elmofongo: Does Stanley Parable satisfy you as a game?
it satisfied me as a dialogue between the player and the developer, which is very rare so I enjoyed it a lot :)

and it's funny sometimes :)

What would you describe as it being satisfying as a game?
I enjoyed playing it and had quite a few laughs while doing so.
I guess that was enough for me.

That's not the point. SP gameplay is what it is for very good reasons. FNaF is actually perfectly fine as well. It's your own fault if you completely fail to grasp the point of them.

Aah. You're trying to trick me into buying a game, GOG! The shame! *chants* My backlog is big enough. My backlog is big enough. My backlog is big enough.

Love those reviewer quotes. ;)

Elmofongo: Well the spritework is not all that compelling. I have seen better 8-bit art-styles like Shovel Knight and the classic Megaman games on the NES and Final Fantasy 3 on the NES
OMFG! IT DOESN'T HAVE THE GRAPHICS!!111!!!1!

Dear Esther sucks though. :P

oh, now don't be rude :)

he said it's not compelling, he didn't say it's ugly :D

but be honest - some low-fi or x-bit graphics are simple, but pretty... this game is not pretty by any standards :D

I'll still play it though, because I don't say it's ugly as well ;)
So this totally overhyped weird indie-rpg is now also available on GOG... NO THANKS! I'll pass! :D

Hey at least I offered a decent explination. I compared the graphics to its peers/comterporaries. I did not go as far to compare it to Warhammer Total War's graphics.

Besides its true. Look at these other 8 bit sprite games:

It certainly is unique (like undertale but in a different way). It's a self describing game, like an XML schema.

Yes I consider it a game. One worthy of my time.

True dat. The Chinese Room sucks in general. Their writting is incredibly prententious and they can't justify their "walking simulator" aesthetic whatsoever.

Five Night's At Freddy's problem is that its repetitive.

All 4 games and the all fall in the same pattern.

"The Rabbit and Fox goes in the Left door, the duck and bear goes in the Right door"

Personally I thought FNAF 1 and 3 were the better games by Horror theme alone.

2 is too bloated and colorful, and 4 is rather annoying with its focus of hearing.

Is it a game that you see yourself playing for YEARS to come. Do you see Stanley Parable as being as timeless as Half-Life, Morrowind, Thief, System Shock, Deus Ex, etc.?
