What is Undertale anyway?

Undertale, a most peculiar RPG adventure, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 20% launch discount.

What is Undertale? It's a good, tough question. It's a particularly weird little game — a textbook case of so unusual and special, that saying too much might end up a disservice.

The adorable 8-bit RPG is, like most things in life and Undertale, an unassuming layer of lies. Lies, beneath which lies one of the most interesting indie games in recent memory — Undertale the RPG where talking your way out of every fight is an option, but then so is total genocide. It's a game that throws countless twists at you — abstract encounters with absurd enemies, the most unexpected consequences to your actions, and vastly varying experiences that are 100% your fault. Who you are, and how your Undertale plays out will change everything — even your next inevitable playthrough.

Your most peculiar adventure begins with Undertale, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. The launch discount will last for one week, until March 8, 1:59 PM GMT.

Vythonaut: Well, don't be so sure about that... :)
I can't imagine why you'd say that...

hmm, seems that the fanbase haven't arrived here yet, I assumed everyone here will tell my why the game is so great and why I should continue to play, but instead almost everybody here hates it or doesn't care :D
Ehh...I might give this a try as a couple of my friends spoke well about it.

tinyE: I don't trust good or bad reviews on there. I need a recommend I come in here and ask all of you. Even those of you I don't get along with I still trust.

I think it's insane more people don't do that.
I agree. The reviews on the storefront tend to be highly skewed one way or the other.

Zoidberg: Oh neat to see this release here, pretty awesome touching game!

But fortunately, as it is currently unfairly priced (that is not uniquely priced), I will not buy it again, so thanks for that! :)
avatar
PaterAlf: Pretty much this, except for the fact that I don't own the game by now and would have bought it right away. :(
http://undertale.com/

here you'll be able to buy it in dollars and get a steam key along with your drm free release. It's not on sale now though.

Kunovski: succumbed to the hype some weeks ago and bought elsewhere, tried to play for about an hour (got to the house and had some pie)... and even though its combat system and storytelling is unusual, I still don't really see why it's the best indie game of 2015...

would someone care to elaborate (without spoilers) what's ahead of me? because honestly I don't really feel like continuing right now, but I don't believe the game ISN'T great :)
It's not a game to be praised about its high end graphics or combat gameplay, although those are fine in their own ways.

Let me put it this way: you don't play Undertale, Undertale plays you!

Nice. Thank you!

Can't be done. Just go and play it further, there's no individual thing I can say that would sell the game to you without spoiling anything, and even if I did spoil something, you'd not get why is it cool without seeing it.

wolfsite: I just have no interest in playing this game, but that has more to do with the over obsessive fans that rage on anyone that didn't agree that it was the greatest thing in existence that no other game can ever touch. That attitude just soured any desire to try the game out.
What if this game is the best thing they experienced in gaming? Some people have great experiences with the x-th iteration of Call of Duty, which is way "dumber" than this pearl, and it's fine really. Videogames is like most everything: there's a bit of everything in it and a bit for everyone. Only that games like Undertale are pretty rare, so when you're hungry for that sort of thing and you're finally put this in your plate, you suddenly feel ravenous... some let it go to their heads but hey... less harmful than drugs, right? :)

truhlik: I heard alot about it. Download demo version. And tried it. But was a bit disgruntled :( So removed it.
Don't know why others are so hyped about it. Maybe I didn't find true spirit of this game.
I had tried the demo too and wasn't much convinced, got feedback from serious journalists, decided to go for it and was blown away 2 minutes after the demo. But hey, there's no guarantee.

I have been spoiled by the fuckin commenters in Spoony's stream of the game.
avatar
fan3l: Because, many game developers still prefer Steam as their main platform.
Also, because of the piracy, many games are not DRM-Free, even that is a stupid ideea, as long as big pirates are launching their version in same day (maximum 2 days).
Maybe, the producers should find another way of getting money.
It has been available drm free on the official site till the release, pretty sure.

well, as one famous FBI agent once said, "I want to believe"... :)

I'll try to delve deeper

rampancy: ...aaaand cue the hate brigade. I wonder if I should make up an "Undertale Release Thread" Bingo Game to see how many people bring up that it's only a game for dirty rotten SJWs, or is "not a game", or "sucks because of the graphics", or "sucks because a lot of people like it so much".

Anyway. Thank you GOG, for bringing this here. You've got my $7.99 today.

Elmofongo: Well the spritework is not all that compelling. I have seen better 8-bit art-styles like Shovel Knight and the classic Megaman games on the NES and Final Fantasy 3 on the NES.
avatar
rampancy: In that case, I'd just ignore all of that and go with what people you trust say about it. I myself got into this game primarily on the recommendations and comments from TB and Jim Fucking Sterling Son. I pretty much ignored everything else out there.
avatar
Elmofongo: I will at least admit it looks like a game worth playing compared to the Stanley Parable and Five Nights at Freddy's.

At least Undertale looks like it has substance.
I disagree with you about Stanley Parable not having substance.
avatar
phaolo: Nice release, but.. I still have to understand if this game is great as some say, or just extremely overrated. O_o
avatar
omega64: Little bit of column A, little bit of columb B.
We meet again, dr. omega64 :P
So the game is good, but not great, I guess.

avatar
Fenixp: It's entirely unique and defies all expectations. And since people weren't expecting much of the game, they rated it quite highly.
Ah I see, good point.

Does Stanley Parable satisfy you as a game?
