What is Undertale anyway?

Undertale, a most peculiar RPG adventure, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 20% launch discount.

What is Undertale? It's a good, tough question. It's a particularly weird little game — a textbook case of so unusual and special, that saying too much might end up a disservice.

The adorable 8-bit RPG is, like most things in life and Undertale, an unassuming layer of lies. Lies, beneath which lies one of the most interesting indie games in recent memory — Undertale the RPG where talking your way out of every fight is an option, but then so is total genocide. It's a game that throws countless twists at you — abstract encounters with absurd enemies, the most unexpected consequences to your actions, and vastly varying experiences that are 100% your fault. Who you are, and how your Undertale plays out will change everything — even your next inevitable playthrough.

Your most peculiar adventure begins with Undertale, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. The launch discount will last for one week, until March 8, 1:59 PM GMT.

In the press:
“The puzzles aren't particularly impressive.” 10/10 – Destructoid
“I have a couple of issues with the user interface.” 10/10 – PCInvasion
“If there’s a criticism to be had, it’s that sometimes Toby Fox doesn’t know when to let a joke go.” 10/10 – The Jimquisition
Hey GOG, why did you use an awkardly chosen screenshot as the background image/shelf icon instead of the official artwork like you usually do?

Kunovski: succumbed to the hype some weeks ago and bought elsewhere, tried to play for about an hour (got to the house and had some pie)... and even though its combat system and storytelling is unusual, I still don't really see why it's the best indie game of 2015...

would someone care to elaborate (without spoilers) what's ahead of me? because honestly I don't really feel like continuing right now, but I don't believe the game ISN'T great :)
I think it's heavily subjective, but it's also a slow starter - I agree the story didn't get good for me until at least the Undyne fight. I also have to say, having a love for anime and Japanese games helps, because there's a lot more references that you'll get. At a bare minimum, it's a game with a good story and an actual "morality" system which leads to different endings and developments. It's filled with pretty fun characters and has some good jokes as well as some moments of epicness, and the music is *really* good (again, it gets better as you go on and you meet more and more epic bosses, with accordingly more epic music to accompany them). So there you go, mostly. It's a your-mileage-may-vary thing I guess but for me it wins the title of best game of 2015 hands down, yeah.
wishlisted on Steam... now I can get it here instead..
While i'm not really a fan of the game itself the soundtrack is awesome. Like really, i can play it only for the tunes <.<

Is that confirmation that GOG is working on releasing the soundtrack here as well?

Well duh, Barry is pretty quick on the draw. ;P

benmar: Played the demo. Didn't like it much. Disappointed.
But I can't claim to understand a game based on a 20 minute demo alone.
Despite thinking the game is almost abnormally overrated a la Final Fantasy 7 and Half life, I will probably give it another chance. Someday, a long time from now, during an insane sale, with a 90% discount.
Perhaps.

But still, I give a thumb up for every GOG game release, even those I don't understand. No exception here.
According to my friends who have fallen in love with it, the game really shines with the story and the way it layers meanings or takes on various metas of gaming (restarting often enough will make in-game characters react apparently). So yeah, a short demo isn't going to let it shine. That said, nothing wrong with not liking it.

I've finally picked it up since it came here. We'll see what I think in a little bit. :)

it's hilariously true. there have been a couple times where i thought "he's got to be a bot.... a drm-free loving bot."
This is great news! Unfortunately for GOG tho, upon completing the game back in October and getting my mind blown away by how good the plot and writing was, I went on and bought the game to most of my friends already, so Steam and Humble Bundle have already snatched most of the money GOG would have probably gotten from me instead.

Fairfox: For the Windows edition, is the GOG file an installer for an exe? Because THAT WOULD BE CRAZY.
It's more about unified packaging than anything else really - when you're backing up a GOG collection, you probably don't want a random Undertale executable to be thrown in there. Then there's the rather negligible compression.

I read this is more of an adventure game(similar to point and click) than a JRPG. The graphics don't move me and game play seems boring, but I'll buy it and try it when it is on sale at a lower price...wish-listed!
