What is Undertale anyway?

<span class="bold">Undertale</span>, a most peculiar RPG adventure, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 20% launch discount.

What is Undertale? It's a good, tough question. It's a particularly weird little game — a textbook case of so unusual and special, that saying too much might end up a disservice.

The adorable 8-bit RPG is, like most things in life and Undertale, an unassuming layer of lies. Lies, beneath which lies one of the most interesting indie games in recent memory — Undertale the RPG where talking your way out of every fight is an option, but then so is total genocide. It's a game that throws countless twists at you — abstract encounters with absurd enemies, the most unexpected consequences to your actions, and vastly varying experiences that are 100% your fault. Who you are, and how your Undertale plays out will change everything — even your next inevitable playthrough.

Your most peculiar adventure begins with <span class="bold">Undertale</span>, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. The launch discount will last for one week, until March 8, 1:59 PM GMT.

In the press:
“The puzzles aren't particularly impressive.” 10/10 – Destructoid
“I have a couple of issues with the user interface.” 10/10 – PCInvasion
“If there’s a criticism to be had, it’s that sometimes Toby Fox doesn’t know when to let a joke go.” 10/10 – The Jimquisition

Niggles: OKAY some people have gone and on about this game. So whats the story with people wetting their panties to get this game here? Why is it so good?
Without using any pretentious lingo, Undertale is a game that knows it's a game. It points out cliches seen in countless RPG's as well as using gameplay mechanics to comment on how gamers don't want actual moral choices in there games but a power fantasy's that will stroke there egos.

Save scumming, binary moral choice systems, games made with YouTube in mind, asshole gamers that want to kill everything just for the hell of it. Undertale takes a jab at all of these.
Whaaaaaaat!?!?! It's here? Damn it! Here I told myself I'd hold off buying anymore games for the next few weeks... That resolution is going out the window.

Thanks for bringing it here (to everyone involved, Barry included ;) ) !
Been waiting for this to get here. Bought it. Unfortunately for it I started Planescape Torment yesterday, and it will have to wait to be played.
Undertale is a good game, and deserves recognition for that. I am glad for its popularity, as many other good games did not have the fortune of being recognized for their excellence. Some like Thief eventually got the reputation they deserve...while others, like Wild Guns are largely forgotten. Good games don't deserve obscurity.

The people who detest Undertale for its popularity should not be given credit: They will continue to misjudge other deserving games, to the detriment of gamers and developers alike.

jforte: I can almost sympathize with those who complain about the community, but I see way more people making hateful comments about the game & community than I do fans that are actually showing any kind of toxic behavior. I think the complaints are way overblown, unless the mere act of liking the game more than other games is considered toxic behavior...

Yeshu: Well, count yourself lucky. I love the game but the community that formed around it was the scourge of the internet for weeks after it got popular. While the waves of porn and sh!ty fan fiction where predictable, the insufferable levels of smugness people have for playing it is mind numbing.
> waves of porn
> sh!ty fan fiction

I'll believe it. In fact... now that you mention it, I did come across a tumblr page where people were insisting that Asriel and Chara were a couple.... which is really something since the game says they were like siblings. And they were also children.

To be fair, though, that garbage happens in a lot of fandoms.

> insufferable levels of smugness

Have not witnessed very much of this myself but I can believe it too. I guess I am lucky, huh.
Okay GOG, good joke. Now where is C&C and Heretic/Hexen?

G..GOG?
I have absolutely no interest in games that require you to play 100% on one path or the other to get a "full" experience (when it claims all your choices matter), but it's good it's here for those who wanted it.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOILER

And I hate that fact that 1 of the endings of the game purposely crashes the game to "make a point" forcing you to Ctrl-Alt-Del.

I found that a troubling trend because Five Nights at Freddy's did it aswell.

Also spoilers:
It doesn't. The game doesn't crash, it closes. It quits. It exits. I don't know how people get it in their head that the game crashes, unless they have an inadequate understanding of how programs function. The game code is entirely functional.

There is absolutely no reason to use ctrl-alt-del.

Maybe this is just splitting hairs over definitions, but the game does not "crash". It is not malfunctioning or encountering unexpected errors.

Bouchart: The game strikes me as being pretentious hipster nonsense, given the massive amount of hype. Maybe I'll get around to it some day but not any time soon.
It strikes me the same way... but I just can't tell. The praise its getting looks enthusiastic and legitimate.

Can't tell if hipster nonsense or artistic achievement.

Confused.

I have watched a video and told me it crashes when it happens.

But regardless Five Nights At Freddy's treats the game crashes as a gameplay feature. In the first game it happens when you get caught by Golden Freddy.

Yeah, me too,
plus after you wait for 10 or so minutes and you start a new game your save is "corrupted".
Others might think it´s not a big deal, but I can´t stand those things.

yogsloth: Can't tell if hipster nonsense or artistic achievement.

I'd say the game is a humble artistic achievement, the hype around it is hipster nonsense. ;)

I haven't fully played through the game yet though. What I've seen was neat and sometimes surprising and amusing, but I haven't had the big revelation yet that makes me see it as something extraordinarily special. It's quite a good and entertaining game, and not just what it looks like on the surface (e.g. a JRPG), but I still can't see it being played through and enjoyed by people who don't like JRPGs and who are already put off by the graphics and cute characters. I definitely wouldn't call it a game that will entertain, surprise and impress every player; you've got to have an open mind to get something out of it. And apparantly you need to be patient, too, because I hear the more surprising stuff happens later in the game, it won't reveal itself right from the start.

Probably not a game for me since I suck at bullet hell games. I somehow died against the first boss which is supposedly impossible o_O

Good to see it here anyways :)
I am glad it found its way here.

Will buy it as soon as possible.
