What is Undertale anyway?

Undertale, a most peculiar RPG adventure, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 20% launch discount.

What is Undertale? It's a good, tough question. It's a particularly weird little game — a textbook case of so unusual and special, that saying too much might end up a disservice.

The adorable 8-bit RPG is, like most things in life and Undertale, an unassuming layer of lies. Lies, beneath which lies one of the most interesting indie games in recent memory — Undertale the RPG where talking your way out of every fight is an option, but then so is total genocide. It's a game that throws countless twists at you — abstract encounters with absurd enemies, the most unexpected consequences to your actions, and vastly varying experiences that are 100% your fault. Who you are, and how your Undertale plays out will change everything — even your next inevitable playthrough.

Your most peculiar adventure begins with Undertale, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. The launch discount will last for one week, until March 8, 1:59 PM GMT.

In the press:
“The puzzles aren't particularly impressive.” 10/10 – Destructoid
“I have a couple of issues with the user interface.” 10/10 – PCInvasion
“If there’s a criticism to be had, it’s that sometimes Toby Fox doesn’t know when to let a joke go.” 10/10 – The Jimquisition

Impaler26: So this totally overhyped weird indie-rpg is now also available on GOG... NO THANKS! I'll pass! :D
I have to ask - what is it about this game? I've seen it mentioned glowingly here several times. Is it the gameplay? Story? Weirdness?

Elmofongo: Does Stanley Parable satisfy you as a game?
avatar
Zoidberg: It certainly is unique (like undertale but in a different way). It's a self describing game, like an XML schema.

Yes I consider it a game. One worthy of my time.
Uuu, it's ask Zoidberg time!
What about me? Do I satisfy you?
My God... it's like GOG is listening.

Good, good.

Elmofongo: Is it a game that you see yourself playing for YEARS to come. Do you see Stanley Parable as being as timeless as Half-Life, Morrowind, Thief, System Shock, Deus Ex, etc.?
A game can be great even if it doesn't have replayability. >_<
That's a shit argument.

Chacranajxy: My GOG... it's like GOG is listening.

Good, good.
fixed.

I thought about typing that, but it seemed a little on the nose. I'm kinda glad you did it for me, though.

Kunovski: [...]

I'll try to delve deeper
Wrong game
avatar
Kunovski: if you're pretty sure it's going to happen, just buy it and wait ;)
Please don't. Buy it once it is ported. That attitude is catastrophic for the gaming situation on Linux.
To me Undertale is underwhelming. The game tries hard to be the next Mother/Earthbound with the you don't have to kill everything; however, I find Citizens of Earth to be better as a Mother/Earthbound-style game.
So why is this game so popular? It looks like some kind of puzzle game with an RPG built-in.

Kunovski: succumbed to the hype some weeks ago and bought elsewhere, tried to play for about an hour (got to the house and had some pie)... and even though its combat system and storytelling is unusual, I still don't really see why it's the best indie game of 2015...

would someone care to elaborate (without spoilers) what's ahead of me? because honestly I don't really feel like continuing right now, but I don't believe the game ISN'T great :)
You have basically just done the "tutorial" so far, the actual game is still ahead of you (in my opinion at least).

Another tip: Try to forget what other people say about this game, whether they think it's bad or the bee's knees. Just play it with an open mind and let yourself be surprised. Try to find out what YOU think about this game. Whether one likes it or not depends on the personality of the player in my opinion.

ok :) even though my terrible lack of free time forces me to choose "instant entertainment", I do wish to know why, why is this such a big deal :)
FINALLY! :D

It's a game (Undertale along wioith Stanley Parable) I will remember in years to come, it's a game I will base my opinion of other similar games.

I played through Half-life once, same for Deus Ex, didn't play (much) of the others.

In the present subject quantity is not the critical characteristic of great games.

Is a painting better because it has a bigger support, or more colours?

Would a million-page choose your own adventure book be the best one compared to smaller ones?

omega64: Dear Esther sucks though. :P
avatar
Mr.Caine: True dat. The Chinese Room sucks in general. Their writting is incredibly prententious and they can't justify their "walking simulator" aesthetic whatsoever.
Yeah, Machine for pigs was as forgettable as Dear Esther. All aesthetic and no density, no presence.

Why GOG? Why do you keep taunting me?

I litteraly bought this game on Humble Bundle six weeks ago, and now, I'm compelled to buy it again despite having no reason to buy it again (like extras).

Probably on the next 75% discount, though.
