karnak1: I honestly can't understand how people can be bothered / triggered / ecstatic with games like this. Playing a communist/fascist terrorist in a game is not much different than playing a GTA-like game where one can go around beating and robbing people (or killing them) without any regard for social order or laws. Or playing a thief in an RPG. Etc...

It's just a F'ing game. I have no sort of leftist symphathies, but I definitely want to play this game.
GTA isn't being promoted with "Kill the cops" etc. The last time they did ("Kill the Haitians/Cubans") they caught a huge backlash.
Plus GTA is getting its fair share of criticism of said cop-killing content from various politicians and governments.

Matewis: Yep, pretty much this. Or something like Freedom Fighters for that matter. Which by the way is a glaring omission in gog's catalogue (wishlist). Such a great game, but admittedly a bit of a diamond in the rough.
avatar
Breja: I'll wait for the Game of the Year Zero Edition with the "Starve Together" and "Everybody's Gone to the Gulag" DLCs included.
avatar
Matewis: XD

On a related note, where are the rest of the Don't Starve titles on gog? Don't Starve Together, Hamlet??
Unfortunately it seems that GOG and Klei are not on the best of relationships right now. Hence the reason why we don't have the rest of "DS" expansions and "Oxygen not Included".

And I'd love to have "Freedom Fighters" here. I really enjoyed that game.

Excuse me, but how does most of this have anything to do with objectivity? You are mostly talking about how you had fun and enjoyed game, your impression of the game, which is subjective by default since it relies on emotional response. Just like impressions of people on Metacritic which found the game to be bad. And there is absolutely no objective or rational reason why would anybody care about somebody else's subjective impressions.

Only objective thing you mentioned is high degree of environmental destruction with great graphical fidelity, which depending on your personal and completely subjective taste can be completely irrelevant or the most awesome thing ever.
This thread. Good lords of the Endless Void, this thread. Azathoth itself is having nightmares.
I browse the forum once in a while, but when I read some comments like many I see here (both up, down and neutrally "voted") I kinda wish GOG deleted General Discussion forever and left game specific forums only.

Edit - P.S. before you ask, no, I don't care about your freedom of opinion when such opinion is irrational garbage. I just wish I didn't have to suffer it while browsing in search of more information on a videogame.

VBProject: It was already on Steam couple of years ago but then disappeared.
It's a new game. It just got released today/yesterday. It's never been on Steam (or anywhere else) before.

avatar
swires86: With ADL's condemnation the other day and now this blatant promotion here, it sure makes me want to expand my library on Steam some more instead!
See above, this game is already on Steam, in fact, it is currently being featured on the main homepage.

Strijkbout: But we already have a red guy taking on a totalitarian capitalist corporation, and it's even made by the evelist of corporations ever!
avatar
fronzelneekburm: Take the attached screenshot for example. Can you name any games (include AAA titles if you want) that have environments where you can do that kind of damage while still having this level of graphical fidelity? Because I can't think of any, to be honest. Did you know that if you throw molotovs, the fire will spread Far Cry 2 style and eventually engulf an entire house?
As a response to both of you, although I'm playing the Steam Edition right now, apparently it is better

Wasn't that a game made by Hitman developers? Would you mind telling me why you liked it? Asking because I really enjoy Hitman series.

To be honest I don't remember much of the mechanics, because I played it when it first came out, more than 15 years ago.
In fact I was interested in the game because I had loved the first Hitman and I was curious how the studio would tackle a non-stealth and mostly action-based gameply.

I loved the premise. That 80's-style "Reds are invading" story and all the Urban Guerrilla concept of the game. Entering houses, the "aim" mechanic, etc.
Of course, the gameplay is completely dated by today's standards but I still remember how it was fun back in the day. Would have no problem playing it again.

EDIT: this video of the first minutes gives a good sensation of how the game works:

Tnx. Game does look more dated than Hitman Silent Assassin and Contracts, but would definitively like to see it here for historical preservation, if nothing else. Shooting seems weird compared to Hitman, more arcade-like.

Yes, the game has nothing to do with Hitman in terms of game mechanics. I consider Hitman to be one of my favorite game series, since I always loved Stealth games.
FF is more like an action game which doesn't take itself too serious. Still I think it can be quite fun if one forgets about the graphics.

I've gotta add that I suspect the video I linked doesn't do the game much justice concerning the graphics. I think I remembered the game having better graphics when I played. Either the uploader lowered the resolution or my memory is playing tricks on me.

Don't know about fun since I am very picky guy when it comes to shooting mechanics in the games, but let's not argue about subjective tastes. By quickly skimming through the wikipedia article I noticed the game mentions charisma mechanic and leading squad/teammates which support you in battle, and you are playing as a rebel leader. It seems quite similar to this game. It would definitively be interesting to see how effective it was, considering AI is notoriously difficult to code. Would definitively support release here, for historical reasons.

TONIGHT WE RIOT! -Breaks windows of independent business in the middle of night and runs away.

So revolution, much brave.
A few weeks ago a developer, Starni, was shamed into changing text of a game announcement for Strategic Mind Blitzkrieg because some felt teh announcement sounded a bit too much like fascist glorifying / cheerleading. In that case it was quite subjective.

Now we have a game release page that actively glorifies punching people (billionaires) in the throat. While my politics may agree with the general emotion of the statement, I don't feel there's a place for that here. If instead of "billionaire" you'd place "poor," "old," or a country name, there would be no question but that this kind of thing is over-the-line.

IMHO this is a bad look for GOG, a site that spends much time defending their boutique curation.

Speaking for myself I think the issue is that nowadays too many people (including game devs + publishers) worry too much about what the "vox populi" and the media have to say.
I know this all too well since - throughout most of my life - I've been called a "communist" by the rightists or a "fascist" by the leftists. Still, my opinions are my own. If one doesn't like them, they can go screw themselves. In the same way, I think all the people have the right to have their own opinions.

If the devs of this game are radical socialists, then good for them. I only care if the game is good or bad. If it's good, then I want to play it.
A similar situation happened when GOG wanted to sell Grimoire here and, regardless of the quality of the game, there were people complaining that it had no place on GOG because it was supposedly made by an alt-right fanatic.
Should we also ban every book and film made by soviet authors or supporters of fascist states? - But I digress...

My opinion: as long as the author is not a sociopathic murderer or a pedophile, if his/her work is good, I want to have the right to enjoy it.

swires86: Antifa Simulator 2020 is just fine, but any game with a right-wing message would be banned on the spot, amirite!?

(just that you nerds don't get all decent game stories are already based on traditional gender roles, ethnic conflicts, the military and so on)
avatar
Mafwek: You have a plenty of strategy games on GOG which indirectly or directly promote wide variety of Right wing ideologies - from capitalism to fascism.

From 40K and Civ to Tropico, take your pick.
Dude. I could agree about W40K with humans being anti-alien and stuff, but in Civ you have all specrtum of ideologies. And Tropico is outright pro-socialist as it's clearly based on Cuba and Castro regime.

The issue is not a game-maker's politics.

The issue I have is what the game-maker has written on the game's page -- advocating violence against a class of people.

If that level of crassness is inherent in the game, then I do believe GOG should seriously look at whether the game belongs on the site. If that level of crassness is not inherent in the game, then "cleaning up" the game's page would seem all that is needed.
