Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is here! Her legacy lives on – play the next series of Tomb Raider adventures in this remastered collection of the Darkness Trilogy.

How are the controls on these? I've always wanted to get into the originals, as they seem like great action adventures, but even on the 1-3 remasters I found it hard to get used to. Especially in platforming.

Weirdly, I had no problem adapting to the convoluted System Shock 1 controls.

Weirdly, I had no problem adapting to the convoluted System Shock 1 controls.
The problem is that these games are all designed with tank controls in mind and while you have the option to switch to modern controls in this one as well (according to reviews) the big problem that you are unable to jump back with modern controls probably still exists. This is however crucial to play the Tomb Raider games. If the camera turns the moment you want to jump back (which it did in the TR1-3 remastered) you can only guess where you have to stand to make a good jump which is extremely annoying. I would never recommend to play any of these games with the modern controls as long as they did not implement a key to jump back.

I've also been told that the GOG Galxy overlay is not working with this game (same as with the first one).
So it would be great if GOG could fix this or if Aspyr check this out.

If you're talking about the topless woman on the back of Pierre's jacket in TR1 having a bra added, I'm not sure I understand the hysteria around that. In the original game, the image is so pixelated that I'd be surprised if you even noticed what it was. Plus, Pierre is on screen for a grand total of about five minutes across the whole game... I'm not in favour of censorship at all but I think it's weird to refuse to purchase a game over a change to a small texture on an item of clothing on a side character you barely see. If I were to guess, I'd imagine that explicit nudity at a modern fidelity would have bumped the game rating up from a 16 to an 18, which the publisher probably wanted to avoid. The removal of the pinup posters in TR2 (I think) was a mistake and was reversed. The only other thing I've heard people complain about is the content warning at the beginning of the game. You can think what you like about that. I personally think it's somewhat warranted because of the way certain cultures are depicted in TR2 and TR3. It is uncomfortable, imo, to play as Lara gunning down a tribal village to steal their religious artefact. You might not think that's uncomfortable, and that's fine, but a brief text blurb warning people about that content is objectilvely not censorship and I'm happy they went that route instead of removing the content from the game. Have I missed some other major piece of content that was changed or removed? Because otherwise, I really don't understand what people are complaining about...

edit: Just wanted to add, there are absolutely cases of agregious censorship in games and media, and I'm firmly against that but TRI-III Remastered is a lovingly crafted remake of some classic games that had been neglected for years. Does it really live or die for you based on whether the cartoon woman on Pierre's jacket has visible nipples?

A lot of people simply reject any censorship on principle, no matter the reason, the extent or what the censoring entails.
Also because of the slippery slope being in effect here too - if you don't call out and reject even the most insignificant bit of censorship now it will lead to more significant censorship in the future.

No hysteria at all. Regarding the jacket there's even a mod to restore it available and they did fix the missing easter egg posters after the backlash.

You misunderstood the problem I have here ...

It's all about being honest and trustworthy. Aspyr released TR1-3 remastered with a (useless) disclaimer that explained how TR might be offensive to some (afaik it never offended anyone but that's not the point) but that they decided to keep the content untouched anyway to give the player the original feeling. Not long after release it has been discovered that they did censor the jacket and after that people discovered that they removed the posters. The posters were added back in after backlash.

Point being: they actively promised the player something that was a lie and they never reverted the censored jacket until this day. For me this means that I cannot be sure that the actual game won't be censored as well. If they had not lied to the player the first time I would have purchased this immediately without any question. Unfortunately that's not the case and so I will wait a bit to see if people report censoring or lack thereof. It's the same as always. Do something right and get rewarded, do something wrong and accept the consequences. Imo one of todays problems is that too many people simply accept bad things without any consequences and without consequences the game industry will never stop doing such things.

As it has been said already, I don't care if they censored a word, a texture or even some music. Censoring imo should be illegal and I absolutely hate it.

As I've mentioned, I'm sympathetic to that perspective. I personally am part of the vocal minority who are aggravated over Tom & Jerry cartoons from the 30s/40s being censored in modern releases. However, I really think there needs to be room for a little bit of nuance. Pierre's jacket is not a central element in TR1. I hadn't even noticed what was on the jacket until people started complaining about it because you can barely see it in the original game. The response online seems incredibly disproportionate. Also, people complaining about the content warning feels like it's more about political dog whistling / virtue signalling than about the game itself. It's irritating to see a very competent, faithful remaster become the latest ammo in the "culture war" because of a single texture on a jacket or a five second content warning.

I should have clarified that I didn't mean to insinuate that you were being hysterical. However, this is an excerpt from a review on this very website:

"I can't believe that they censor everything that is beautiful in a woman, they hide even the forms of a woman. I am not talking about only these games.
It is insanity and an attack against women driven by minds corrupted by neo-marxist and neo-communist politics"

That is what I would call hysterical. I could maybe even understand that response if it was Lara's clothes that had been changed but it's a patch on a side character's jacket. Do people really want the game to have a higher age rating just so they can enjoy 2 minutes of cartoon nipples on a guy's jacket? Whether other content in the game is offensive or not is a separate debate but I hope we're both in agreement that a short content warning is preferable to removing/changing content. I'm entirely unsympathetic to the idea that someone’s enjoyment of the game is ruined by having to sit through a five second text blurb on how content that wasn't offensive in 1998 might be received differently in 2025.

Another edit: Sorry for the walls of text. I wanted to say, I'm sympathetic to your hard stance on censorship but it's hard to look at all the angry 1 star reviews and feel that people aren't being stupid about this. It's a small change to a very, very minor detail in an otherwise really faithful remaster. Review bombing the devs seems very petty to me. I'm just grateful that the negative response didn't discourage the devs from remastering the rest of the games, or stop the publisher from funding it.

I do agree that the review is a bit over the top ... but the fact that it is just a bare breasted woman on a jacket of a moving NPC also begs the question why they even had to touch it at all. I doubt the rating would have changed. I guess that is the reason why the reviewer was complaining about the very fact that they censored it because it was a nude woman ... as if nude women are something that's evil.

Absolutely. I think such disclaimers are completely useless but as long as they don't change the game as well I can live with them just fine. Unfortunately this was not the case with TR1-3 remastered.

Add to this that the disclaimer is programmed in a way that it shows only the first time the game is started and can also be edited since the content is just a plain text file .... so yes, no problem for me as well.

I do agree that a nude woman on a jacket is a silly thing to have to censor. I wouldn't be surprised if the devs were forced to make that change last minute and decided it was more sensible to comply than to suffer a higher age rating. However, I think it's equally as silly to act like changing that tiny detail is some outrageous act of censorship that entirely alters the tone of the game. Frankly, I think the dogmatic fervour you see in people review bombing the game comes from an intense fear that games, and other media, are being targeted to wider demographics of people than in the past and are no longer solely and exclusively targeted at them. I see these same kinds of reviews on games that contain LGBT+ content or (shock horror) non-white people. It's a radical political movement, IMO.

Sometimes, I feel like I notice a higher percentage of these kinds of toxic reviews / forum posts on GOG, compared to other stores, and it bothers me because I want games to be released DRM-free and I'm afraid that devs will turn away from the platform if their games get review bombed or people in the forums are excessively negative.

I can't really say I disagree with you there. Maybe that makes me a hypocrite...
I think I'd maybe compare this issue with the jacket to something like the cosmetic hat DLCs for Little Nightmares. Is it irritating? A little. Does it warrant review bombing the game and disregarding any and all of it's good qualities? Not in my opinion.

If memory serves correctly, only the first two Tomb Raiders were any good, even the third was unnecessary fluff in the remastered package. It's the same with the most recent remakes. Amazing how the "Lara Croft" brand sells more than any critical acclaim.

Yeah, you can tell it was an annual franchise. TR3 really suffers for it, imo. The level design really drags and really favours cheap trial and error difficulty. 5 is a rushed cash-grab and 6... Well, I don't know what to say about Angel of Darkness. It's such an unfinished mess... lol
Having said all of that, I think the first two are undeniable classics and TR4 is a return to form that warrants the price of entry on its own. But I am a big TR fan.
