Thea: The Awakening, a turn-based strategy/RPG of leading your people out of a fantastic catastrophe, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com with a 20% launch discount.

Did you know that Thea is "goddess" in Greek? Well it is. It's also you in this addictive hybrid of roguelike exploration, card-game combat mechanics, and strategic planning. And you will need to master all three, if you are to ever save your destitute people from the apocalypse that befell the land, letting horrors of the Slavic mythology run rampant below a horrible, all-encompassing blanket of darkness.

This is not a story about glory and battle-hardened heroes but one of powerless survivors fighting for existence. You've got a huge, procedurally-generated world of hexagons to explore, thousands of items to craft or gather, and hundreds of random story events to navigate as you fight your way towards the ending that better reflects your choices. Your people look to you for their arduous awakening. Do not let them down. It would be rather ungodly.

Secure the survival of your believers one divine turn at a time in Thea: The Awakening, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 20% discount will last until February 09, 1:59 PM GMT.

ShadowWulfe: Wait so it is procedurally generated? I only ask because it feels like every freaking game in the last year has been procedurally generated.

Nirth: And permadeath..
ow, thats very sad to read... i am kinda 'allergic' to perma death in game, you see i really enjoy games a lot but the ultimate fun for me is a game where you can change the odds in favor of the player :D
( the user who bought the game and wants to win, cause you dont play anything just to be on the loosing side)

Apparently not necessarily.

huan: wonder if I'll be able to import my saves and unlocked stats... (from the free linux version)
It appears to work. Profile and unlocks look completely fine. Saved game loads too, but the full version has two new difficulty options that say "VALUE", but otherwise it looks playable. So, it works better than I expected.

Nirth: And permadeath..
Only if you opt-in, you get one manual save slot otherwise (one exception, if you manage to loose all your villagers the game will end, but regular save scumming is possible). And you get XP for your god even if you loose, sort of like Populous 2 works.

Yes it is generated, and much of what happens in the world (where monster lairs spawn, random encounters during travel) depends on random generator too. It hurts the game about as much as the world in civilization games being randomly generated - which means not at all. It doesn't contribute too much to replayability, it's just how the game is. Replayability comes from unlocking all the 8 gods, and each of them has 4 levels to get.
I meant that I agreed with ShadowWulfe's assessment that so many games nowadays are procedurally generated and I also added permadeath as a trending game mechanic, but I'm glad you answered how the game works. I'll wishlist it for now as I've too many games on my hand.

Chacranajxy: So where's Tuesday's real game? This isn't it. This is the appetizer for a real game.

Right? Guys?

Guys?
depends ....

Annas Quest, Punch Club, Black Mirror 1,2,3 and more games like that (no 3d) and the release of the EOTB 1,2,3 games, were al buy at release for me :D

I also have Syberia 1+2
(Syberia 3 sady looks like it be totally differnt, more 3d and some FPP like as far as i can see of some test videos, so the 3rd game wont be in my collection unfortunately, plus the req. will be too much for my old pc)
Lost Horizon 2 is also too heavy for my machine aswell.

So it all depends on what is released by the gamedevelopers :D
Typically no buy games for me are: (motionsicknes/photosensitivty)

- FPP
- 3D
- rotating stuff, zooming in and out
- platform games (are 99% full with weirdmotions / flashes)

and thats 60% or even more of all game types and maybe even 75%, so that leaves only few games
i am able to play...
Anyway ... sometimes there are suprises like Punch Club who turn out to be a playable game, but usually 75% is not suitable for me

But i keep checking every day to see if something nice might have come up :D
Always good to see more of my wishlist makes it's way over here before I pull the trigger on buying it.
There doesn't seem to be a forum for this game yet?

As for the game, I'm conflicted. I love 4x, love turn based and live number of other aspects (exploration, questing, RPG elements, crafting, equiping people etc.) in the game but I've watched several videos and combat seems unapealing to me (mainly due to card game nature of it).

Wishlisted for now.

I bought this on steam already, it is an incredibly good game with the only mild pitfall of being incredibly unforgiving and quite often completely unfair in the things it throws at you, the card game for all resolving situations is also a bit tedious after a while and auto calc becomes a norm.

Still compared to the other kinds of pitfalls of games like this in the same genre this one stands a lot higher than most.
That's a peculiar blend of game play mechanics.
I'd definitely like to try this out at some point.

IAmSinistar: Bought! I backed this on KS, where unfortunately it didn't make, but I'm glad the developers kept going anyway. It sounded like a perfect fit for GOG, and apparently GOG agrees. Glad to see it here!
I backed it twice, and twice the kickstarter failed.

Wonder why people can let this to fail when it is such good game. Maybe the devs are no good in marketing.
high rated
Awesome game. Bought it on Steam (GOG being late as usual...) at a whim, and was very, very pleasantly surprised.

I'm not a great fan of card games, but Thea's combat works nicely. The other elements are pretty fantastic.

A lot of the content is randomly generated. And by "a lot," I mean majority of it. From monster lairs, to "events," to quest locations... There's a lot of RNG in the game, and on higher difficulties it can get pretty unforgiving (especially if you do not know the game mechanics by heart). A lot of the game consists of attempting to mitigate any "bad" RNG outcomes by preparing for them or adjusting your gameplay to accommodate them (that high-tier crafting material spawning across the map behind several overpowered monster spawns? Yeah, you probably need to rethink your long-term strategy XD)

It's very much a "rogue-like" game in that you need a decent knowledge of game mechanics not to lose - again, at least on higher difficulties. If you don't like games that require several false starts to learn them, you'll probably be frustrated and/or bored by Thea.

There are quite a few difficulty options you can use to fine-tune a session to your personal preferences, though.

One thing worth noting is that the "Slavic mythology" angle can get pretty weak. While there are a lot of Slavic folklore elements in the game, there's also a lot of "Tolkienesque" parts that, unfortunately, water down the uniqueness of the settings.

Anyway, not to end up with a wall of text, I'll say just this - after buying Thea, I clocked in almost 160 hours in a matter of about two and a half weeks (and yes, I do work full time).

Not bad for an impulse buy.

Edit: One last thing I forgot to mention - the development team was -very- active and responsive on Steam forums after the game launched, and they are still working on improvements (as well as additional content - some of it apparently meant to be completely free of charge).

I likewise. And you're correct about the marketing savvy of some devs. The same nearly happened to Unraveled as well, but it happily made on its second attempt.

Some of the games which unfortunately didn't make include interesting titles like , [url=https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mojobones/impact-winter]Impact Winter, Outland 17, and Windwalkers. Some, like Impact Winter, are continuing development regardless, while others like Windwalkers have declared that nothing will go forward with the game.

For Wind Walker, they actually get less then half of what they originally got in the first funding. I don't know why the devs think it is a good idea to make a movie first in the second attempt. They lost quite a portion of their original backers changing from game tot movie.

If they continue pitching the game and with the revised funding goal, they should hit it. Still, maybe the cost of making a movie is cheaper than a game, I don't know much about movies.
