Walk the line

The Witness, an island full of mind-bending puzzles solved through keen observation and persistent exploration, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 10% launch discount.

Puzzles. The enigmatic island you've woken up in is dotted with panels full of puzzles. To solve them, all you need to do is draw a continuous line from an entry point to an exit point. Simple, isn't it? It isn't. As in every great mind-bender, there are rules to follow, visual clues to decipher, hidden paths to discover. Designed by Braid's creator Jonathan Blow, the vibrant, meticulously arranged island provides all the hints you need, while at the same time obfuscating its true nature from you. Approaching the puzzles with an open mind and exploring the environment in an open way are essential to overcoming the island's challenges, as you learn to speak its language and fall in love with its deceptive simplicity.

Walk a straight line towards an abundance of brilliant puzzles and become The Witness, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 10% launch discount will last until May 18, 12:59 PM UTC.

IFW: I think it would help a bit if you'd said what platform would you like to play it on ;)

shmerl: Personally - on Linux, but if they'll develop their engine using cross platform technologies (i.e. Vulkan and the rest), they won't have issues with porting it. They are probably stuck with using DirectX, that's why it's Windows only. Same mistake that many developers do.
You know it was released on PS4, right?
You do not have DX12 on PS4... not even close.

Probably the sales records from Braid on non-Windows PC platforms did not warrant the additional cost of porting the engine to either Linux or OSX - it can get very expensive, as porting a custom engine can take several man years (which is not cheap if you want good software engineers), so there must be some RoI.
Say the cost would be like $250k (being generously cheap here) and you'd sell like 1000 more units on each... No-go.

Same reason why you can't see The Witcher on non-Windows PC platforms either - GOG and this CDPR has all the sales data for their game, and in fact all other games being sold and they did their math.

Starmaker: If anything, game value should be proportional to [a positive power of] content per time unit, with game length in the denominator.
I think there's merit to both. Each approach separately probably assumes a decent baseline of the other parameter ("It's probably reasonably long. How fun is it?" / "It's probably reasonably fun. How long is it?").
In a mobile device, would you care about battery life or performance per Watt? Hopefully - both.

The catch is that there are plenty of games out there, so you might as well pick the best ones and switch between them as they "run out". It's basically a "many fish in the sea" argument. You might as well argue that it's only logical to switch to a new girlfriend once the current one "runs out" or you get bored with her. For some reason, people would probably fumble about, saying that they grew attached and wanted more of the same. Weird, isn't it? After all - people adore novelty.
I'm faintly surprised Blow allowed any intro discount at all. Unluckily for him, I'm saving up for one of next month's releases, from a publisher who was willing to commit to Day 1 on GOG, so this is not the moment for me to purchase. Onto the wishlist for $30 or less it goes.

The non-promo price of Braid, though, is absolutely ridiculous. In fact, the promo price for Braid is ridiculous. It needs to be a $5.99 game when it's not on sale, given the number of times it's been on sale/bundled.

Only if they designed their engine poorly. Good engines are designed in a way that makes porting them simple. I.e. they avoid platform specific stuff as much as possible. But if it's not done from the start, then of course porting a poorly designed engine to other platforms becomes very difficult. I suspect that's what happened with the Witcher 3. No one was thinking about those issues at the right time (i.e. before all the work was done), and when they woke up it was too late, and amount of work would be similar to making the engine from scratch.

Great to see both of these games!

Unfortunately, I've already played a fair amount of this game. And since it's a puzzle game, I don't really want to replay it that soon, so I'll wait a few months / years before picking it up, even though I had pre-ordered it and I was quite enjoying it!

I just bought Braid, though. I played a little bit of it like two or three years ago, so I don't remember anything too serious. But I'm disappointed that the soundtrack isn't available (even for sale).
Bought the game on Humble (kind of surprised that it was either a DRM-Free download or Steam key on there, and not both), and was pleasantly surprised by it. Maybe when there's a bigger discount I'll get it here.
As much as some folks are complaining, just wanted to say:

Thanks, GOG! You've listened to us customers on having this title here, so that's to be lauded.

Silverhawk170485: In my opinion that price is reasonable for an over 600 puzzles game. Yes, each puzzle consists of drawing lines on a board but each one has it's own twist by adding new rules. These rules you have to find out first. There is no help ingame which explains the rules of the puzzles.

TheTome56: Eh, don't mind Breja. He's GoG's resident sourpuss. If it isn't base price he's complaining about, then it's regional pricing. If it isn't regional pricing, it's the content. If it isn't content, then it's who developed the game. If it isn't who developed the game, then it's that there are too many indie games and not enough classics, etc. Poland must absolutely suck as a country if people like him are so grumpy all the time.
Impressive. Pretty much all of this is untrue. Plenty of people complain about regional pricing, I pretty much never raise that issue. I don't think I've ever complained about "who developed the game" I don''t even know how I'd go about it, I don't much follow developers and who develops what. Never have I complained about "too many indie games" as I don't believe such a thing exists. They are the majority of what I buy on GOG.

So... are you just a shitty little troll, or plain stupid?

Breja: Wait, wait, wait.... how much?
avatar
Starmaker: Worth every cent. Puzzles cost money. (It being shiny and generally pleasant to look at is a bonus.)
I'm not saying it's bad, but it costs more than The Witcher 3. More than Pillars of Eternity. More than any adventure game on my wishlist, most of which large games, with huge casts, plenty of puzzles and often are sequels to very popular and well regarded games. I don't think I'm being irrational when I see that as something of an overkill.

At this moment it's a bit too expensive but oh well, perhaps in a few month I will increase my gaming budget.
I've seen enough gameplay footage when it first came out to decide this isn't a game I'd want. Sure some of the puzzles sound good to do, but when you start making the puzzles walking over a slow tedious 3D component, the whole point of seeing the entire puzzle goes out the window. It's one reason I quit QUBE when it started turning the entire screen pitch black for it's puzzles and haven't touched it since. I don't want to bumble around and solve it by accident or take an hour to solve what should have taken 30 seconds.
Wishlisted for now
Any cheat for the puzzles so I can just walk around looking at the pretty landscape and enjoy the story? I suck at puzzles.
