Walk the line

The Witness, an island full of mind-bending puzzles solved through keen observation and persistent exploration, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 10% launch discount.

Puzzles. The enigmatic island you've woken up in is dotted with panels full of puzzles. To solve them, all you need to do is draw a continuous line from an entry point to an exit point. Simple, isn't it? It isn't. As in every great mind-bender, there are rules to follow, visual clues to decipher, hidden paths to discover. Designed by Braid's creator Jonathan Blow, the vibrant, meticulously arranged island provides all the hints you need, while at the same time obfuscating its true nature from you. Approaching the puzzles with an open mind and exploring the environment in an open way are essential to overcoming the island's challenges, as you learn to speak its language and fall in love with its deceptive simplicity.

Walk a straight line towards an abundance of brilliant puzzles and become The Witness, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 10% launch discount will last until May 18, 12:59 PM UTC.

In the press:
"Exquisitely layered puzzles populate a world that will keep you guessing" - PC Gamer
"Just as arresting and enthralling as anyone could have expected" - Game Rant

RWarehall: HowLongToBeat has it at:
Main Story 17½ Hours
Main + Extra 26½ Hours
Completionist 48 Hours
Combined 24 Hours
It also depends on how long you need to solve the puzzles and how long you need to figure out the rules of the puzzles and also if you are using a walkthrough when you are stuck at some point. And you will get stuck for sure. ;)

Zoidberg: Darn it. :P

Well, at least it made you think about it for two hours. :P

omega64: I suppose so.
It's my own fault for being so stubborn.
Kept trying to figure out why everyone was raving about it.
Well, that's actually quite commendable. I applaud you for that.

Maybe give it another try when you feel more inclined. Or maybe let a friend play it instead and you watch.

The Witness uses its own engine developed by Blow and his team, which took a significant portion of the development time. Blow was insistent on using his own game engine instead of an existing solution such as Unity, as he would be able to fully control every element of a game engine that he created himself.

And of course, they didn't take care to make the engine cross platform... So no, thanks. I'll support developers who consider that before they start making the game.

Well, they are welcome to fix it, then I will buy it :)
so gogs main emphasis is now on overpriced, content-lacking walking sims? :(

its still going downwards, the revolution is dying

I think it would help a bit if you'd said what platform would you like to play it on ;)

Personally - on Linux, but if they'll develop their engine using cross platform technologies (i.e. Vulkan and the rest), they won't have issues with porting it. They are probably stuck with using DirectX, that's why it's Windows only. Same mistake that many developers do.

I was not surprised with the pricing. This game is known to be quite pricey and Jonathan Blown is known to demand and defend that price so it's probably part of the contract with GOG. Anyway it always was much too expensive for me and I was never planning to buy the game at this price. But now I can wait for a sale or another and one day the price will be right. For now it's wishlisted.

As games of this type go, it has plenty of content which has left most players content.

Being able to walk around doesn't turn a puzzle game into a walking sim.
The Witness
Release date: Jan 26, 2016 Price: $39.99
Score rank: 63% Userscore: 85% Metascore: 87%
Owners: 104,699 ± 7,877

Never been on sale for more than 10% off on Steam either.
A slightly better than average Userscore, but I'd imagine the price has a lot to do with that, just as it affects Star rating on GoG games at times. I'm sure that a lot of "highly ranked" Steam games have inflated ratings because the user received them cheap in a bundle. It's far easier to "Thumbs Up" a 25 cent game than a $40 one.

That seems to be a large number of reasonably satisfied owners.
Wishlisted. Got to solve Talos Principle anyway before :)

Breja: Wait, wait, wait.... how much?

Pfft.

Ha!

Buahahahahahahahahahaha!

>BOOM!<

>Little pieces of Breja fall from the sky<

Silverhawk170485: In my opinion that price is reasonable for an over 600 puzzles game. Yes, each puzzle consists of drawing lines on a board but each one has it's own twist by adding new rules. These rules you have to find out first. There is no help ingame which explains the rules of the puzzles.
Eh, don't mind Breja. He's GoG's resident sourpuss. If it isn't base price he's complaining about, then it's regional pricing. If it isn't regional pricing, it's the content. If it isn't content, then it's who developed the game. If it isn't who developed the game, then it's that there are too many indie games and not enough classics, etc. Poland must absolutely suck as a country if people like him are so grumpy all the time.

Anyway, back on topic. Thanks for getting this here GoG! Been looking forward to this one. I'll make sure to pick it up when I get paid next. Wishlisted for now
This looks amazing.

I'm old enough to remember the original Myst and just how much of a game-changer it was. Still one of the best, most immersive gaming experiences ever delivered, and this game is clearly meant to restore that experience.

But, yah, dat price.

This is a game I absolutely will buy and play, but I probably will wait for a bit of a discount first, even if it's a year or so from now.
