Independence Daily.

<span class="bold">The Westport Independent</span>, a press-censorship simulator, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows, Mac and Linux.

A newspaper is like a living organism. It feeds on its immediate ecosystem of newsworthy events, metabolizes them, then in turn provides conversation fodder for all those stale watercooler discussions. But once it outlives its function, it is gradually left to die.

The Westport Independent is fighting for its life, and as the editor-in-chief you need to ensure it goes out with a bang. Carefully choose what to publish, what to hush, and who to side with. You have the power to both cause a riot and subdue one, sedate the public or ruffle some high-up feathers. And what about those popular gossip pieces that everyone pretends not to read on their way to work? Run them and print money, or swap them out for that thought-provoking editorial — thus securing your writers' appreciation and future unemployment. Whatever your decisions, they will make headlines and help shape a totalitarian nation. You better write that down, son.

Manage the perils and the press-tige of running <span class="bold">The Westport Independent</span>, DRM-free on GOG.com.
I remember having tried the demo/alpha. Seems less rich than Papers, Please but who knows. :P

Sachys: "£0.10 OFF ANY FUTURE PURCHASE. You get bonus store credit (our Fair Price Package) to offset the regional pricing. "

O____o

So... whats the flat price? - because that amount of store credit sounds daft.
Yeah, it's almost one 1€ here. That's always a pity seeing an indie game take that route. *shakes head*

PaterAlf: This one really looks interesting. Unfortunately it is regionally priced (with higher price points than the base price) and so I'm not going to buy it.
10 euros is a bit high indeed, plus why need open GL 2.0 ?
avatar
Themken: This certainly ties in with the times (oh how punny) with the traditional newspapers struggling to survive.
yup it certainly does.
avatar
spindown: Looks almost exactly like Papers Please... coincidence?
i got a little dejavu feeling aswell, but papers please had some colors? didnt it?
avatar
Treasure: Is it just my impression or the trailer really does give a vibe that this game is actually about a newspaper trying to get by during a totalitarian regime? Because if it is, this actually looks more interesting than papers, please (which I haven't played but always got the impression it was just about some guy in passport control in a communist regime...)
Thats what i thought when i read the discription and watched some playing videos of the alpha version on youtube
but is doe not have to be playing in banan republic settings cause even today in the 2015's we had some things that were left out of the news aswell :D , and who knows what will be left out more. :D
So basically this can fit any setting in any timeperiod, beiing it in the 50s or even in 3000's :D

The game looks interesting but ...

It is a little bit expensive, its very very small : only 52.5 mb?
it has no colors, (i assume the music can be turned of seperately ?)

Processor: 1.8 GHz Processor is a little high for such a simple looking game ?
Memory: 1 GB RAM

Graphics: Open GL 2.0 Compatible Graphics Card ----> why open GL 2.0?

i have : OpenGL Support 3.0 so basically that should work, i did notice that in the past some programs i had that prefered open gl would give problems, so i wait a while for a sale

wishlisted for now

https://www.gog.com/game/punch_club has the same amount of credit: in its case, base $9.99, UK $10.09, least $3.19 in ex-Soviet countries, most $10.89 in parts of continental Europe. Probably the UK gets its own region because of Sterling (and our VAT rate?), despite ending up close to the base/USA price.

yogsloth: I'm trying to understand where the fun is.

Is this just a political point disguised as a game? What do I do to enjoy this?
Make a drinking game out of it.

Each time you reflect on the creeping existential dread of clinging to a dying good in a market economy, praise an economist of your choosing, and take one drink.

Each time you have to lay off an employee to make ends meet, ponder their fate and imagine their next Christmas, like the Cratchit family. Take two drinks.

Each month you successfully afford medical insurance, thumb your nose at cirrhosis, take three drinks, and go to bed for the evening.

FUN!

Do you really have to point that out at every game ?

AlienMind: New games with text in bad resolution ... I don't get it.
maybe thats to give the Retro feeling?
i did notice that the last months /years, tons of 8/16 bit games clones were released, little blocky limited color pixels, with the old 70-80s metallic , low quality beeps and music.
But maybe its because my eyes got used to watch clear and bright (no pixelsoup) images that are being used in most modern casual games i own, and maybe they have to re adjust to get used again to watch the old blocky graphics.

Well, I don't really see how a totalitarian regime could be a banana republic. For me, the term banana republic is used to describe an incompetent state, as in "Greece is currently a banana republic" -and also many satirical tv programs here in Cyprus show a degree of self-sarcasm by proclaiming Cyprus to be a banana republic. On the contrary, what sprang to my mind when I saw the video, especially the latter part, was the keyword "Nazi Germany" -and half a minute later, the other fateful keyword "the regime of USSR and its protectorates" - which definitely do not fit in the banana republic label -not to mention that they aren't even republics! And maybe some stuff is left out of the news in 2015, but the distortion of events was much greater in the aforementioned regimes. Plus, the black and white atmosphere doesn't really help in me thinking it could take place in the year 3000. Anyways, this was just my comment mainly on the term you used...

In case you care, that's not an accepted definition for the term. "a small nation, especially in Central America, dependent on one crop or the influx of foreign capital." or "a small country, especially in South and Central America, that is poor, corrupt, and badly ruled" are better definitions.

Though I agree that the term certainly sounds like something that should have a soundtrack of Yakety Sax

Licurg: Do you really have to point that out at every game ?
Yes. Several of the developers and publishers are reading the release threads and they should know why I don't buy their game. Not buying it without telling them why wouldn't send a message.
So... it's a game about ethics in journalism?
Cute:)
What does qualify this as "good old game", if I might ask?
In other words, are there objective criteria for adding brand new games to gog's catalog?

catpower1980: it goes directly to my "original & atypical games" GOGmix (and to my wishlist too)
From the looks of it - and a few minutes worth of internet research about this game - I wonder if that's the right place to put it. The visuals are lifted straight from Lucas Pope's Papers Please and the gameplay is, according to a Steam review, a "carbon copy of Pope's earlier gamejam game - The Republia Times".

Add to that the regional pricing, the less than stellar Steam reviews and I'm left to wonder how this particular title even made it through the "curation" system.

Thanks for correcting me, I guess. Although indeed the term should be most used for states in South America, since it is precisely there that bananas are produced, I do believe the term can be also in a more general context in the way I just described. For example, your first definition, "a small nation, [especially in Central America], dependent on one crop or the influx of foreign capital.", other than the Central America part, holds mostly true e.g. for Greece, as it is rather small in comparison to others, and in the 19th century it did mostly depend on raisin exports (the raisin crops in France had been destroyed in the 1860s by some insect and Greece took over for a while until France started again producing raisins, which caused the Greek raisins to remain unwanted and caused a mini financial crisis), and it is nowadays indeed dependent on foreign capital, although the state is doing its "best" to dissuade everyone from ever investing in Greece again. As for your second definition, "a small country, especially in South and Central America, that is poor, corrupt, and badly ruled", again, other than the location part, holds true for Greece, as it is indeed small, corrupt and badly-ruled-and will become poor real soon, the way its debt is going(not that it is rich or anything right now).... Ergo, Greece at least is indeed a banana republic.
Anyways, I'm sorry I brought politics into this (hope you weren't offended) but I just wanted to say why I thought the term still applies in that case. Also, fyi, I haven't heard of this Yakety Sax -maybe I should check it out...
edit-turns out I had heard of that music before, just didn't know the title.. But still I don't see what that kind of music has to do with anything...
