rojimboo: I have the first one, and have been meaning to play it for years now. I hear this second one is better in every way though. Do you need to play the first one before this one? Is there some story continuity?
[...]
I would not say you need to play them i n sequence, they work very well as stand-alone games on their own right.

I would say that the the second one is a little easier than the first one, or that was at least my experience. They both have some good puzzles 9and meta puzzles) but not at the same headcratching levels as some of the puzzles in the first place.

I also liked the story in the first one better, being interested in philosophy the premis and they way it is told is very intereting. The second one... kinda bungles the story towards the end.

Atlo: Again - I wasn't aiming for anything. I just remembered that you once made a thread about puzzle games and thought it would be interesting to bring that up.

We good?
Sure.

Thank you guys for your replies.

The reason why I asked, was that I want to entice my partner to play games with me. I've made a setup for the living room, couch, wireless controllers, and big screen TV. She loves puzzles, but I also want to impress her with some decent graphics and presentation. If only to justify my recent splurge on a 1000 euro GPU, and avoiding questions like "why are you playing 30 year old games on your new shiny new toy" (I was playing Chrono Trigger).

The first one looked very interesting, but is a bit dated in the graphics department, so I wanted to skip it. By the sounds of it, it's totally doable.

Mafwek: Was afraid of that. I never found out all secrets in Serious Sam games, so I hope this won't be too hard.
It will add many, many hours to the total playtime (probably the reason I did not finish the game). I am also pretty sure you're going to have to look up how to get at least one star online, because it requires one extremely specific piece of knowledge about a certain real life event.

After reading your post I remembered that the original had a few issues, not with graphics but with performance. The motion induced sickness is mostly due the weird choice of Field Of View but Creoteam solved it by adding a choice entry in the Settings menu, but there was some weird micro stuttering, I'm not sure if it was related to my hardware at the time or some game issue but I do recall searching online for a solution and found some settings that worked.

Sorry for the vague post and although I quoted you, the post is not directed to you. Someone might know more about the performance issues and if they were fixed (maybe I'm misremember but pretty positive I was not a isolated case).

I think it's long been patched. And even then, if I remember correctly, stutter was more common to the DX12 renderer (as so many other DX12 games have exhibited). I had no stutter in Talos Principle 1 though with either of the DX11 or Vulkan API's, on both W7 & W10, it's a lot smoother and better optimised than a lot of recent UE5 based releases.

I think I'd have preferred a game without the secrets. I don't know why, but I got stuck with the idea that I have to find them and the resulting tediousness made me abandon the game.

The secrets in Doom/Quake/Serious Sam are different - they feel optional (as they should). They give you a boost (or a joke in Serious Sam) that is nice, but not required.

TP's stars unlock other things. That's like Hexen (or the unofficial Wolfenstein mission packs) with the mandatory secrets.
What is the discount with the newsletter? I have subscriptions activated, but this one was not sent to me.

I bought a new PC three years ago and Chrono Trigger was literally the first game I've played on it. :D

Thanks for the input. It's been a while and my memories of the game are a bit fuzzy.
I thought this was already released but then I realised it was Steam. Good anyway GOG got it.
