rosumek: Great! Played this a lot in my old 486SX. The addition of a history and a living setting (with NPCs and all) was a huge leap from the first shooters. Even still having an old original, I'll buy for the added features.

Just a question: what exaclty are those "achievements"? If it is only a thumbs up and a pat on the back for doing something, I'm cool. But if it is game content that will be just acessible to whom use galaxy, I think that goes againts the spirit of old games...

SCPM: As you say, it's just a little 'trophy' or 'stamp' for performing actions such as 'Completing the demo' or 'Ignite an Acolyte with a flamethrower and have his burning corpse ignite three others'.
Good to know! Quad-acolyte burn should really earn a cookie, but I'm happy not to use the server for now.

Just made a two hour tour through the game now, looks quite good. Higher resolution works on distance (nearer is "classic" - i.e. pixelated - as usual) and voices are a great addition.
heavy breathing

Finally.. it's here.. :O
This game is excellent! And my avatar is from this game :D
does this game support either LAN, Direct IP, or cross platform with steam? wanna know if I can play with my friends over there
Never heard of this game back in the day. Seems a few GOGgers were hot n heavy for this. So whats the go with the game?

The only option for Veteran Edition is to search for public matches created by GOG friends. The DOS version lets you setup network and modem games, but requires a fair bit of setting up (instructions are in the multi.txt file). Since the Veteran Edition is open source, someone could hypothetically fix these issues. Also, you could take the .WAD and put it in something like Chocolate Strife or Vavoom.

Just a few things for oldschool fans:

1) You can turn off the bloom and all other modern graphics effects.

2) If you're looking for the original-unmodified 1996 release of the game, you can find it in the "strife-dos.zip" file within the game's folder.

Overall this re-release is purely awesome, and even without a discount the price is a steal. Already sunk 3hrs into it, also very stable, haven't encountered any issues or crashes.

Buy the game already. :D

Can't tell what it means to others but for me I consider it "Deus Ex - The Prequel", because it's basically an FPS with RPG elements. At the time of release it was overlooked, partially due to it's dated graphics considering Quake was released in same year and looked much better.

The story is no Baldur's Gate but it holds it's own pretty well and at one point you'll even have to make a game changing decision (avoid wiki if you don't want to spoil it).

It's an underrated gem, and to me it's much better than the crap being released these days.

Assuming the Galaxy integration was handled like Steam's, https://www.doomworld.com/vb/post/1564055#post1564055 should apply:

Most people probably don't know that SVE still supports plain UDP-based netplay too, though. Same command line options as are used for Choco Doom. You'll see the usual textlib startup instead of the fancy Steam lobby frontend, obviously.

Great pains were taken to ensure that nothing was too uniquely implemented to depend totally on Steam. With enough work, you could technically make the lobby stuff itself work over pure UDP. What you're missing are Steam's automatic NAT punching and fallback to piping your packets through the Steampipe CDN if it can't get through your firewall directly - those are features implemented in the Steam client and not in any code we wrote.

Is the stealth stuff a super pain in the ass? :P Some games like Thief can be fun with stealth but then others like the Hitman games can be fantastically cruel.

clarry: That seems to have been the case. AIUI, the developers originally did a no-Galaxy build but GOG wanted Galaxy integration and someone with the power to make decisions wanted to comply.

IAmSinistar: Thanks for the inside info! It makes sense from the viewpoint of GOG, but is unfortunate for those of us who care not a whit for Galaxy gubbins and who just want our games in a timely fashion. And I'm not so sure it makes a lot sense for GOG, if it ends up costing more sales than the platform drives.
According to https://www.doomworld.com/vb/post/1558610#post1558610 the technical stuff was complete back in February and the remaining delays were contractual. It doesn't say which party was responsible for those.

Doom, Strife, Wolfenstein, MDK, Quake...

Now we're just missing Hexen and Heretic.

Oh, and Commander Keen, but that kinda breaks the Genre.
My prayers have been answers! Thank you GOG, I'll buy this whenever I can.

I would love Hexen and Heretic, even Heretic 2, which a lot of people didn't seem to like (I thought it was great, myself).
I think these games are coming sooner rather than later, but what would really impress me is if GOG could get Hexen II with the Portals of Praevus expansion, which is supposedly super rare.

It is super rare sadly, not even the steam version of Hexen II has the expansion.

It's a rights issue, Activision owns it. Makes me wonder if why it's taking a while to get this series on here is because GOG is busy working their magic to ensure it ALL gets on here at the same time.
