Michael Praise and Diana Eden investigate the paranormal in this return to classic survival horror – we’re talking, of course, about The Mansion of the Macabre, now out on GOG with a -40% launch discount until September 10th, 7 AM UTC!

Explore the Crowley Manor and unravel the secrets of the Occult. Inspired by the works of Lovecraft and a love letter to classic 90’s survival horror games. Featuring an ancient evil and occult conspiracy, Cthulhu and his macabre creatures have their grip on the estate in 1920’s Florida Wetlands. You go in freely, but will you leave the same way?

Now on GOG!
This is some junk clone of Alone in the Dark : the intro, the level design, the story, the inventory... And it looks worse than the original.

I played the original a few weeks ago and I recommend to play the original instead of this low quality ripoff !!!
What. In. The. Actual. Hell.

Lawyers gonna be busy I think.

This is plagiarism, but someone did actual work doing it. And if you're gonna be doing that much work anyway, why not make your own game instead of an obvious attempt at copying someone else's original work? And a very awful copy at that.

I guess YouTube has shown that people can (and still do) get away with plagiarism, so now others are thinking they can make money doing the same thing. Which leads me to...

OMG that price!
And GOG is actually selling the original Alone in Dark trilogy for less than half the price for this piece of copy/pasta ware :-D

@GOG Why are you allowing this kinda scammy product on your platform? I sure hope this is not a sign of what's to come in the future.

Leroux: [...] for €17.77(!) no less (what kind of a strange price is this, btw?) [...]
Maybe they were going for 6.66€ but then thought "hey, why not give this devilish number our very own spin, just like we did with the game itself" .... I just imagined the meeting where this was discussed :D
This is all so strange.

When I search Google for "Mansion of the Macabre", I barely get any results. The game on GOG + this news article. The publishers page. An announcement on Twitter/X. The official trailer on Youtube. A page that tracks achievements. But that's basically it.

But no Steam link. No news or reviews. No reddit discussions or anything. It's basically crickets and tumbleweed. Did this title appear from thin air? Why aren't there any previews or reactions?

And then the available info on the game. Who is the developer? A search on "Spacefarer Team France" / "Equipe Spacefarer France" yields nothing helpful.

The publisher's PR blurb includes this:

Featuring two characters to choose from with an intricately written story, platform elements, puzzle solving and classic 90’s survival horror tropes, explore the mansion of the Crowley Family and find and defeat the underbelly of true evil.
--> Yeah, I bet you are proud of your immense creativity.

And from GOG's game card:

g2222: But no Steam link.
Maybe because the Steam page has a typo in the title, which inspires even more confidence. XD
Wow, this looks terrible. How can it be that AitD back in 1992 had better graphics than this? Look at the totally wrong proportions of environment and characters. Other than that it seems to be a complete copy of the original, only worse.

dnovraD: On the other hand, that kind of jank was very much authentic to the era; especially in games such as Estatica, where all your combat feedback is non-existent and your models are ellipsoids.
As it turns out, I was around playing pc games in that era (early 90s onwards) and while I was playing mainly what people considered "good games" back then, I don't remember the jank from that time period being quite that blatant.

In particular, I think professional game reviewers in those days would have called out the delayed hit reaction when the aquatic humaoid struck the player and the giant spider going completely through the player (not just slight passthrough at the edge like the hands for example, but complete character box overlap here) as clear indicators of shoddy games even in those days.

The maths for a few important 3D rectangles (you know, the character and the few opponents there are on screen) not to overlap would not have made a computer sweat even in those days. The technical limitations were not that severe.

Maybe it's because they were either paid to shut up, or they weren't taking their job seriously. Maybe it's because the game wasn't actually reviewed by that many people. Maybe you just forgot. (Video)

Oh no. That's where 00063 got the information about the late Steam release with additional DRM. My search did not get that result…

Imagine being so lame that you not only choose to blatantly plagiarize an extremely old game, but also somehow manage to make it look worse.

Alone in the Dark has aged like milk in many respects but at least it has innovation and historical significance to fall back on. This? This is just crap.

I found this, but nothing about a "France" division.

Funny:

Available on Multiple Platforms

Our games are designed for Windows (Steam and Epic), Steam Deck, Linux, Nintendo Switch and XBOX Series S and X.
No mention of GOG, although it seems to a time-limited exclusive release.
time to get the infamous 2007 adventure game Limbo of the Lost on GOG? Its use of plagiarism and lifted assets is so legendary it should be preserved for future generations!

As noted in a review on the store page, the game was actually released a month ago on itch.io under the original name, "Alone in the Dark Remastered":
https://web.archive.org/web/20240814201031/teamtatou.itch.io/alone-in-the-dark-remastered
But subsequently taken down for whatever reason.
