An idle adventure game for all those who search for something new and… don’t like to rush things. THE LONGING is now available DRM-free on GOG.COM.

The game features a lonely Shade, the last servant of a king who once ruled the dark underground kingdom. The king's powers have faded since then and he falls asleep for 400 days. It is your duty to stay in the earthen palace and keep an eye for things until he awakens.
glad to see this come out. will pick this up later today i think.
So what about that connection requirement? Still seeing it listed, and for a game sold on GOG there should be no such thing, for whatever reason...
Looks interesting, but I agree that a connection requirement is a "no sale" for me.

In fact, I've been meaning to set up to run all of my games sandboxed with no network access to ensure that no such requirements slip in without me catching them within the refund period. It'd be a shame to go to all that trouble and pay money, just to still have to break out BitTorrent for a copy I'm willing to grow an emotional attachment to.

(Prior to GOG relaxing the requirements, my plan was to have an airgapped test machine that could multi-boot into the closest support OS to what I want to run them in.)

...that said, I'm also glad that Linux's cgroups just gained the time namespace for lying to individual process hierarchies about the system clock. I don't get along with games that try to force me to play on their schedule.

I can't believe that this game arrived on here, for multiple reasons. It certainly can be easily considered a Game of the Year contender, even amongst games such as Bannerlord soon arriving. This game is easily a 10/10 wishlist game.

Truth be told, I have only watched streamers play it, but what I've seen so far has been outstanding to the very least. The game is absolutely brilliant, which is suprising why nobody had this idea sooner.

I do agree with this. While the connection requirement is a safety measure so players can't cheat the game it still is a DRM measure and thus the game does not belong to here. IMHO, 95% of players would still not cheat even if there isn't a connection requirement. Also cheating the game is alos cheating on yourself due to the nature of this game and what it represents. I do think that the developers can thrust the people to not cheat themselves. Not only that, but this method of preventing to cheat is not perfect and people can still manage to hack the game.

This connection requirement is the reason I haven't bought it on Steam yet, or to the very least I am still unsure. But with this said, I could make an exception since its on GOG now after all.

EDIT: As Oddeus wrote, the developers considered removing the internet connection requirement for the GOG version. However, I do wish it would've been comminicated to us here in a better way through either through the GOG -staff or the devs themselves :>!

They said, they will remove the connection requirement for the gog release. It´s stated somewhere in the Steam forums.
The connection requirement is not good. I assume it's to control the time cycle in the game but there's ways they could implement that without a network connection.

It's a grey area so far as whether some people would consider this DRM, but as it stands for me it's a dealbreaker for purchase. Just use the system clock for the game time tracking, yes it means people can cheat it, but who cares.

It's not even a matter of the DRM debate now (though in the strict sense it is, the dev decides to implement a digital measure to block the user from having the right to play the game when not connected), but GOG says no connection required to play, right? That should be the hard rule, and any game bought on GOG should work just fine if blocked through firewall or on an unconnected computer or on one which at the moment has connection problems. Yet the requirements for this game still list connection required, regardless of the dev's statement somewhere else...
Wow, still requires an internet connection to play even on GoG. That's a hard no for me. It might not be for the purposes of DRM perse but should that server ever go down the game could become unplayable.

Well, off the wishlist this goes.
Just tested the game without Internet connection - it works just fine.

Are there any problems if you move the system clock forward 400 days? There could be hidden checks to prevent cheating at certain intervals. Otherwise GoG should really remove the broadband connection requirement if it really isn't required.

For those unwilling to buy and play this because of the connection requirement: it just isn't a game for you.

It is the whole purpose of this experience to enforce this. You are a lonely shade and HAVE to play this for 400 days whole. (edit oh actually it counts down only from the moment you start, you can idle this the whole way)

If the connection wasn't necessary, it would allow players to cheat by changing the date on their computers and skipping to the end, spoiling it for every other players.

I guess the connection should only be required at launch and exit of the game but I'm not familiar with how things were implemented here.

Thank GOG for allowing this game to be sold here despite that requirement, which is NOT DRM but a purely game design decision. :)

Together with the developers we made sure that internet connection is not required to play and enjoy this unique game :)
